    Using Soudal expanding polyurethane foam is fine, especially with the half masked area. However in sunlight it goes brown and starts to fall to dust after a few years. What about masking the brick and wood side and using mortar or an exterior water based filler. This could be painted afterwards. What it does need is someone to show how to get mortar and filler into variable widths gaps with some sort of U channel and pusher rod. Rubber gloves, fingers and a bit of stick makes a mess and does not do the job well. Polyfilla used to come in a squeezable tube, but a mastic cartridge version would be easier. There are cement mastic guns, but a plasticiser is added to the cement and gorillas with strong enough hands are difficult and expensive to hire. The aim is to get an aesthetic fill which lasts.

    Im doing this job at the moment. Do I varnish/oil the handrail first then pain the spindles white or the other way around? Also any tips to avid getting paint on the handrail for a sharp finish please? Your vids help so much so thank you

  • @PaintingandDecorating

    Thank you 👍 👍 Definitely getting the handrail first coated makes it easier to wipe paint off. Small brush and take your time, cloth and a scraper to wipe off if you do go over. A good job is time and effort.

    I’m just starting out by decorating my mums house and would like to know the best paint brushes brand wise to buy, and rollers for walls, extendable rollers for ceilings and what pile to use on a ceiling that has that horrible sharp bobblyeffect. Also recommendations for best ceiling coving paint recommendations (we need white gloss and white Matt)any suggestions should be great

    Dulux center or Crown centre or your local decorating centre. It's all about the price the more you pay the better the paint. All depends on what Finnish you want, contract Matt, vinyl Matt or a washable Matt. Bathroom and kitchen paint. Water based gloss Leyland. Thanks

    Fantastic video. I am in the middle of sanding 3 floors worth of glossed bannisters, skirting boards and 7 doors. I have dry sanded them, but thinking I may take the extra time to wet sand them just so that the oil based satinwood goes on a lot smoother. Unfortunately as I understand it there is no quick and fast way to do this.

  • @PaintingandDecorating
    @PaintingandDecorating22 сағат бұрын

    Thank you and unfortunately not, the only best way is to keep at it. Have a system on how you sand and dust, work out if it's worth sanding the lot before you get your paint out. Radio on.

    Not this stuff it has a 10 year guarantee. Made with resins and is very expensive. But it's worth the money It's good to apply and fast drying. 3 coats in a day.

  • @PaintingandDecorating

    Not sure about that the paint is more designed to stick directly to rust and not something in between. They are both oil based and it possibly won't do any harm and act like a lubricant for the paint. 😅 But I'd rather not it's more expensive and possibly makes no difference. Thanks

    I start a big outside job next week. Removing putty and stripping windows down and doing them up again. I havnt used putty since my apprenticeship. Question need help with. How long does putty take to dry before you paint over it? Because I was watching a video and it said 6-8 days which I didn’t know about.

  • @PaintingandDecorating
    @PaintingandDecorating2 күн бұрын

    Yes putty takes a few days to dry, but usually that's the first thing you get done on the job. Carry on painting everything else and do the putty last. You could use wood beads pushed into putty to make a seal and nail. That's a quick way. Thanks

    Never burn off under eaves everything else is about common sense. Remove cobwebs and any loose material that can catch fire. Burn off slowly and watch sections for any signs of ignition.
