Minuteman Community Response: Get Ready!

Ойын-сауық

The year is 2029. The world as we knew it ended 5 years ago but we have reforged a small community. Your community leader has sent out a letter for you to respond to a group of armed raiders. The first video is about going over what we are bringing to the fight. Let me know what you guys would bring or what I should have brought instead!

    My red dot is the Romeo 5 XDR. It takes a AAA battery, has up to 40,000 hours on one battery, and I have a 24 pack that is supposed to have a 10 year storage life. Oh, it also has an accelerometer in it. It's on standby until I move it. Then I have MBUS sights on it also. My 4X multiplier doesn't take batteries, so I should be good. Oh, I have been looking at the CMMG conversion. I love it.

This is especially true when you don’t have regular resupply or enough team to split up any extra load. The only thing I see that could be done differently is to put a second set of snaps on the bandoleers to be able to handle p-mags as well as usgi. In this scenario you never know what mags might come your way. Can’t wait for the next video!

  • @Zookeeper63

    @Zookeeper63

    @@EricGPP I replied back to you about snaps but it seems to have disappeared. Probably a good thing considering it was a rushed reply. The snaps are available online or at craft stores (michaels, jo-annes, etc). If you are unsure about which size snap you need take the bandoleer with you to the store for sizing. Stack two P-mags into the bandoleer pouch, take the flap and put over the top as normal, on the flap where it meets the male part of the snap, mark the spot on the flap. Take a soldering gun or a heated nail and make a hole on the mark. Attach the female end of the snap to the flap and you are done. If you have some extra fabric throw a couple of practice snaps into it so you can get the feel of the way the snap tools / hammer works with each other. If you run a usgi and a P-mag in the same pouch it may run a little loose on the second snap, try it on the first snap to see if takes up the slack.

    I think this scenario is a bit....Fantastical....to put it nicely All through history, and especially in the modern world, societal collapse doesn't last very long. Like for example, during the Battle of Britain, when most of England's major cities were being bombed daily by the Nazis, people were still had jobs and went to work. We've seen societal collapse in the last 50 years with the fall of the Soviet Union in the 80s and early 90s. There was definitely terrible unrest, and it wasn't an easy transition, but most people just continued living their lives and adjusted, and people fill the power vacuum. Realistically, if the entire US government just vanished from the face of the earth tomorrow without a trace, abducted by aliens, Thanos Snap, whatever, Amazon probably would still deliver your packages, your ISP and your Power Company would probably still supply your utilities as long as you find a way to pay the bill, etc. Multinational corporations would probably fill the power vacuum (which honestly, might be more terrifying than any zombie apocalypse) and life would go on as best it could. Lots of....prepper types...often have this narrow worldview that forgets that the rest of the world exists. If America stopped existing, other countries would not. The world would continue to turn. History has shown us that this sort of thing isn't for decades. Civil unrest, supply shortages, etc. are usually weeks or months, not years or decades. It's more of a stop and start, not just a stop. Now, for this sort of more realistic scenario. where hard times happen in waves rather than constantly, you need to worry less about there "not being batteries being made anymore" and worry instead about "Batteries cost $100 right now" and build your system around that. If you are using rechargable LiPos like 18650s, they're probably still working after 5 years, and I know this because I have flashlights that run on 18650s that I got before the pandemic that still work that still run on the same batteries they came with. Hell, a brick of AA Duracells has a shelf life of 10 years, so even then this is of least concern. You also have to evaluate how much of an advantage electronics give you in terms of survival. If you can generate your own power with solar panels and have a good supply of rechargeable batteries, you can live a pretty comfortable life pretty easily, even entirely off grid. It's good to have redundancies, but it's also good to consider the advantages a good flashlight or a laptop with an internet connection give you when others don't have it. Now, this point about not seeing the point of pistols seems foolish. In a situation where you are dealing with lawlessness for any amount of time, strolling around with an assault rifle and a plate carrier just makes you conspicuous. Rolling with a concealed weapon for self defense is much more agile, and allows you to avoid conflict entirely in some situations, since that should be the goal. In some situations, the best camouflage is to not wear camouflage. A compact 9mm is never gonna be a bad choice, and quite frankly I think a lot of people who worry about this stuff should be more concerned with their pistol training than their newest AR build. And maybe get some hand to hand self defense training, not letting a fight escalate to firearms in the first place is the smartest way to go. Also, I love this idea that so often comes up in these sort of thought experiments where batteries and medicine basically no longer exist, but somehow ammo for all these guns is so easy to come by? The last time there was a big supply shortage, the first thing to become scarce wasn't batteries and medicine, it was ammo... Maybe worry less about new ways to imagine shooting people and worry more about actual survival scenarios. The kind of people who do nothing but worry about their firearm loadouts in their survival planning are probably going to be the "raiders" and "bad guys" other people are gonna have to worry about, because they had a go bag full of food for their rifle instead of food for themselves...

  • @EricGPP

    @EricGPP

    Well this is more of a call to action, not hide and purely survive situation as defense for your community is your responsibility as the peaceful option is already out of your hands. Who said no batteries? I said MY stock of 123s isnt enough, I never stated AAs lol And I actually point out that a full size pistol maybe impractial but smaller easier to conceal pistols such as a P365 are a much better idea. And in part 2 I get into food so dont jump the gun so fast! Great comment, lots of good thoughts in it!

    @@EricGPP In that case, a more realistic "minuteman" scenario might be getting a call over the radio or even a text message that someone is under attack, and putting together a kit to be able to quickly respond to that situation, and potentially save lives in the name of defense. Enough gear to be able to be effective while still being light enough to react as quickly as possible to the call. Perhaps a balance of weaponry to deal with the threat, but also tools for emergency response like first aid, You said there'd be no batteries when talking about the sight on the AR. CR123s are rechargable, aren't they? For what it's worth, I do agree that Prism Sights make more sense than holo sights just in general, and realistically you can store a ton of 2032 batteries for cheap to keep the light in those running, and it still works without it either way. I only mentioned AAs as an example of how batteries can last well longer than 5 years, so it's extremely unlikely that you would have to worry about batteries of any kind after only 5 years. I think I missed that point about fullsize vs compact. I didn't realize people were actually trying to CCW full size pistols...Yeah, I don't get that. At this point there are enough compact pistols that take full size mags that make that just silly. I just feel like people get so wrapped up in the guns and not enough in the skills that would make a bad situation less bad in the first place in these situations, basically as a way to justify their shooting hobby somehow. I see these Soviet Style Logistics with some dudes where their bags are all bullets and no actual survival tools and know they just plan to rob people for food and medicine, and those are the kind of guys who will be the real bad guys.

    Thank you for the response! You apply alot of logic to it and thats refreshing. If you're interested in part two I actually go over food ideas and the lack of any easily obtainable food to be a huge issue. Part 2 is actually nothing with firearms and is all food, clothes, boots and socks and I havent even touched what supplies are in my pack yet. There's an entire logistics train that has to be established. In my group we call people who only stock guns and ammo "werewolves" and yes they are out there and they will be a huge threat.

    This is going to be a lot! Even 5-years in the future, you will have patrols/defenses on vital resources and assets. We have them now (in the form of police, military, etc.), and we will continue to have them (with whatever is left). Ideally a rifle would be best. The basic infantry load is 210. 210 is not unlimited. Ten men x ten skirmishes equals more rounds to do math on a public forum. The problem is weapons and ammo depend on how much ammo you have stored and how well weapons are maintained/repaired (it is 5-years!). Initially after an apocalypse, I reckon much of the resources will be exhausted because there is plenty. As ammo becomes scarce, weapon and ammo needs will shift to what is available. If you store a ton of 5.56 and 9mm and you exhaust much of your 5.56 on initial skirmishes, you will hopefully have a PCC to keep in the fight with 9mm. Same could be said for .308 for a hunting rifle, or a shotgun, or a PCC, or even modern or primitive bows and crossbows using mostly homemade arrows. You may literally be going into this fictional exercise with just that duty sized pistol or even that .22. Don’t burst my bubble on the batteries. I have been putting soooo much effort into storing batteries and having a rechargeable system for CR123s, AAAs, AAs, 2032s, 18650s, etc. to keep the optics, nods, IR illuminators, radios, etc. functioning! I even wrap my electronics in EMF fabric! I don’t want to ramble. I just geek out on these scenarios.

  • @EricGPP

    Thanks for the thought out reply! Yes there are tons of variables here and you make some very good points. Ammo is entirely dependent on what happens initially, some places might little to no action others may be much worse off. Batteries are interesting because I lack enough 123s to power things for 5 years time but I have alot of AAs to keep my PVS14s going but also battery usage will be massively increased. My current thought is use them sparingly but also prepare for a worst case where you do happen to run out or get very low.

    5years from now and no batteries,fuel? 5 years intro collapse you would have bandits in armored humvee.. But lets assume its the edge of the world. Batteries? Batteries reach the most remote villages in jungles and deserts... Parallel connecting lots of dead batteries, jury rigging some battery replacement module, rechargable batteries so on so on. Also modern equipment is very conservative in battery drain. Foot mobile? If in any way i can avoid it then no. First of all for mission like that you'd need 12-18+ men. Your community is 12+ invaluable members short. You want it to be as short as possible. Also having any form of transport will allow you to take ballistic protection. You must minimize casualties. At very least one animal/vehicle so the men can march light and have their heavy gear transported. Like armies in the begging of WW2.

    @@EricGPP For weapon lights that take cr123s i use rechargable 16340. As they degrade with time you may need to replace them more often but should still be enough. Key factor in logistics is minimizing expenses. There are situations where you NEED big 4x4 truck. Periodt. And more often than that you just need something with wheels and engine. If not for the snow i'd say it'd be handy to have one of this Loncin trikes. 60+mpg and carry 2500 lbs on 8x4" bed. It equals 6 men with gear. Also very handy for daily tasks.
