Kit that Won't Quit Episode #2: The ECWCS Gen 1 Parka

Ойын-сауық

Today I do a short overview of one of the all time favorite military surplus items; the ECWCS parka and pants. This is a must have item for those of us who live in those cold and damp climates.

I was one of the first U.S. Army soldiers in Alaska to wear this parka on the daily. I bought it from a soldier that was chaptering out who was the only soldier I saw wearing one. (I know it irked my Platoon Sergeant that I was out of uniform, but it was regulation kit, so there didn't seem to be anything he could say about it.) This felt THIN compared to the old parka and its woobie-like liner, but it kept me warm. It kept me so warm in -25 deg F that when I walked inside I had to unzip the armpit openings to keep from roasting. It saddens me that I am not in an environment where I can actually get some use out of this excellent parka, because I would buy another just to feel at home in my parka again. I called it my Goretex Parka or my Eck-Wicks Parka. I never owned or felt like I needed to own the other layers in the system. I usually wore M81 BDUs underneath, though in extreme cold I MAY have worn our wool field shirt underneath, but I don't remember doing that. I never needed to spray it for waterproofing. It was my understanding that the Goretex prevented water from getting through. It was supposed to be breathable, but to me it seemed like it trapped all of my body heat.

Nice review! I like hearing from people who used them while in the service. I've used this one civilian side only but was issued the gen II and currently the gen III. The gen III just seems more along the lines of a rain jacket.

Like your thoughts on this gear. I use the Woodland Gortex in our winters as well. Solid kit. Subbed!

Maybe Im using it wrong. 😁😆😆 I've tried several of these- From new ones, to old ones, and totally roached out ones over the years. Never has one done any good in determined wet weather. Snow, yes because thats easy for Gortex to handle but I have never stayed dry using one of these in the rain. I'm convinced all Gortex is a joke . There is more then a few videos testifying to this on YT......

So the new ECWCS system is good and durable, it's based on what mountain climbers use that being said there are some parts that make sense on paper but not in practice cus it's not one jacket and pants it's like 5 or 7 jackets and 4 pants not including your wicking and insulation layers 😅

Good review. Good quality video and good info. I just picked up one of these in packaging still for $25. Was a little worried it wouldn't be warm enough because my rotc issued me a tru spec gen 3 style goretex which doesnt keep me warm at all without a fleece inside

Why is it a mortal sin to carry a AR by the handle? I do not know guns at all.

Inside military joke really! So even though the nomenclature is a "carry handle" using it as such has always been strictly forbidden. If you tried that in any military service they would tear you a new one lol

On the A2 your barrel will try to dip into the dirt. Don't know what the reason was with the A1 other than Army tradition.

It doesnt make any tactical sense to hold it by the carry handle.
