Kit that Won't Quit Episode #1: The M65 Field Jacket

Ойын-сауық

A short video on some fundamental surplus preparation ideas and one of my favorite surplus items; the M65 field jacket.
This is the first in a series of semi shorts utilizing budget gear that will get you through the hardest of times.
An in-depth review of the M65 is also on the way!

    Great video!! Not many people out in the gucci circles will talk about how good an M65 jacket is and wear it outside on a snow day. Two scoops of reality.

    Yeah some of this old surplus gear is hard to beat! The weather hasn't changed over the years so there's good reason to stick with it.

    Great video. One thing I like about M65 coat and cold weather pants is that you can actually use two liners in them to increase their effectiveness.

    Just because something is old doesn’t mean it sucks. And just because something is new doesn’t mean it’s ‘better’. Sometimes, that ‘old’ thing that has stuck around has done so because it has withstood the tests of time.

    I really can't decide if i like my m65 or bundeswehr parka more. The m65 definitely fits better and it actually attaches to the liner, however while the BW parka is not attached to liner, the longer tail does a better job blocking wind. Either way, vintage surplus wins the day and can't be beat

    I think the GoreTex parka is pretty good in the same function and some advantages like lighter and not bulky but "it won't last lifetime". That might be traded off for some situation. For me, where I live doesn' t get seam tape or surplus goretex easily, I prefer anything else that last longer.

    I'm a big guy. So i am never finding a m65 field jacket that will fit me. So i bought one from Mens Propper. Great jacket, i pd 130 for it, yeah i know. Anyways its a great jacket to have. And i got a used hood from McGuire army navy surplus. The inner collar matches the two buttons where liner buttons together. I, then lined up the holes on the hood for the buttons on the jacket made a mark on the jacket. Then i cut off the buttons on the hood that didn't match and sewed them on the jacket, where the holes on the hood would match up. In order to attach the hood. I hope that makes sense. I'm not very good at explaining.

    If your going to be spending extended time in wet conditions like in this video this type of clothing will be a absolute nightmare. It will get wet and stay wet. Super heavy. Bumping around your property or a one day type of movement its good to go. Better options in my opinion multiple light layers. Wool and 100 polyester. I spend 200 plus days a year outside.

  • @EricGPP

    @EricGPP

    Yeah the lack of water resistance is its true downfall. The goretex parka and pants are alot better in wetter conditions with some wool under them.

    When these were originally invented (m43) it was intended to be part of an extensive layering system and aimed mostly at a cold dry environment. Wool blend long underwear, wool shirt, wool sweater or woolen blend coat liner (or the wool Ike style field jacket). If it was raining they just figured you'd use a raincoat or poncho. The original water repellent or Quarpel was good but meant only for brief showers. As the system progressed to the m65 and beyond a lot of the layering that was a part of the initial system fell by the wayside. Today its best to think of the field jacket as a breathable wind resistant softshell.

    @@MPiKMS72 The problem is the weight of the coat at that point. It's a tough garment but there are other garments that weight 70 % less than it but perform the same or better.

  • @MPiKMS72

    @MPiKMS72

    7 ай бұрын

    @@Random_Quads Yes 100%. My point wasn't specifically directed at you, just that most people look at the field jacket in a vacuum and complain that it doesn't do X, Y, Z. They don't understand that it was simply a water resistant & windproof layer of a system with big pockets so you wouldn't need LBE. (That never panned out as planned either). Its also from an era where all rainwear was impermeable to water and vapor so you had two choices- get wet from the rain or get damp from exertion. The woolen base and mid layers were expected to suit either situation accordingly. Also to be fair when new Quarpel treatment was pretty revolutionary and most people today don't have any experience with it, only on garments where its aged and worn out.
