    Out of curiosity Joe, I've noticed that your dogs (with the exception of Boss) have all been females. is this a deliberate choice by you? If so, why?

  • @JosephCartertheMinkMan

    @JosephCartertheMinkMan

    22 күн бұрын

    Yes I prefer females, and honestly hope Boss was the last exception I will ever make! I have a whole list of reasons why I prefer females over males. Of course there are people who prefer the opposite, but these are my reasons for my preference, in no particular order. 1- Reproduction. If I ever want a puppy out of one of my dogs, its much easier if I own the female. If I own the female, I can pretty much breed her to any male in the world. All I have to do is pay the stud fee, or drive to a friends house for free, and I can breed my female to almost any male IN THE WORLD. I can even ship semen in from another country if I want to. It's as simple as paying a stud fee, or talking someone into letting me borrow their dog for a half hour. If, however, I have a male I really like and I really want a puppy out of, I have to go convince someone with a female I like, that he/she should also want a puppy out of my dog, which they may or may not be interested in. If I ask to just borrow the person's female for breeding purposes, we're looking at borrowing a dog for FOUR MONTHS!!! So its a pretty big deal. Also, if I own the female, I have complete control of the litter. It is MY litter and I can keep all of the pups until whatever age I want. I'm not forced to pick one or two at weaning age, I can keep the whole litter until they are 3 months old, or 6 months old, or one year old, whatever I want because its my litter. Even if I pick one favorite pup at weaning age, I will have seen that pup from day one, so I will know is personality MUCH better than if I just show up and pick a puppy based on a few hours of observing the litter. If I raise the litter I have an ENTIRE TWO MONTHS to pick out my favorite pup, if I pick one at weaning age. I also get to ensure the puppies are raised the way I want and fed the food I want them to eat, from day one. 2- Focus. Generally speaking (there are of course exceptions) male dogs are more distracted than females. They want to run around and mark their territory, and sniff other dogs, and try to breed any female they see, and are more likely to want to fight or at least posture and challenge other male dogs. It's just really annoying. Now some females do this, and some males don't, but generally speaking its more of a male problem than a female one. I work in areas with LOTS of other dogs around. Dog walkers, dogs in people's back yards bordering the canals, working in people's houses where they might have a dog. So when my dog wants to run around and sniff everywhere another dog has peed, or wants to sniff every dog they see, it's really annoying! I will never forget the day I was at a weight pulling competition, and the male dog got harnessed up to pull the cart, but it wouldn't go because he was too distracted smelling the carpet from the scent left by the dog before him! I'm not saying a female would never be distracted like this, but this behavior is SIGNIFICANTLY more common among male dogs. 3- Heat. One thing I will NEVER understand about guys who prefer male dogs is they complain about females coming into heat..... that happens once or twice a year for a female, males are in heat 24/7!!!!! They say they can't work when their females are in heat and that's annoying. Well males are ALWAYS in heat and ALWAYS annoying!!!! I'll take it once or twice a year over 24/7!!!! I feel like many male dogs are just as if not more distracted any given day of the year, than a female is even when she's in heat! 4- Peeing. Males lift their legs when they pee. They also pee FAR more often than is necessary because they are actively marking their territory all over the place. Some females love to mark too, but they are squatting to pee, rather than spraying the whole world with their filth! Male dogs pee in their water buckets, pee in their food dishes, pee through the kennel into the next dog's kennel, pee on your kids toys in the yard, pee on your various tools in the yard, pee on EVERYTHING!!! This makes them more challenging to potty train in the house, and makes it so everything in the back yard is COVERED IN DOG URINE. It's disgusting, it's annoying, and it's supper unsanitary! 5- Same Gender. Last reason I prefer females over males so strongly, is I would prefer to have all my dogs the same gender. That way, when that time of year comes around, I don't have to worry about breeding accidents. In my situation, having all males or all females is MUCH easier than having some of each. You have to remember that my dogs have jobs, and certain jobs like ratting, they all do together. If I have to keep some of my dogs separate from each other because that time of the year has rolled around, this can be super annoying when I have a big ratting job to do and I need ALL of my dogs to do it! Also, I am sometimes working on the road. If a female suddenly comes in heat while on the road, it can be more challenging to keep her separate from the males while traveling and trying to get whatever job we are traveling for done. And since I need to pick one gender for all my dogs to be, I might as well have all females, for the reasons stated above.

    Penny and Gus were both owned by my friends. Neither dog were even remotely useful for ratting, but that's pretty irrelevant seeing as they weren't my dogs anyway.

    Sorry but I agree its too much on the kids, I'm sure too that youtube will be hard on your videos being removed when they see the kids are involved. You might want to think about that, seeing as there clamping down on your videosI didn't mind the odd video but way too much daycare yelling.

    Dont rats have diseases that the mink can contract?

    Not really. Rats are the natural prey for mink and wild canines both. They have a natural immunity to their diseases. Plus they are vaccinated against any disease that they don't have a natural immunity against.
