I do think that a lot of this advice is quite helpful, understanding the relationship that the fundamental sounds of a language have with music and how to manipulate that to the advantage of the ensemble and the effect of the piece is truly invaluable information. However, I take issue with the idea of a “human truth” or any concept of “programme” as being essential, especially in the context of a masterclass. Music should not be a slave to storytelling, and poetry has moved past these restrictions since the 21st century. Joyce’s stream of consciousness, Dadaism, the multilingual and meta narrative references of T.S. Elliot, all of these defy at least one of your three “essential” truths. Perhaps a composer does not want to give the impression of progression or development. Perhaps the goal is to create a soundscape of timelessness as in John Tavener; Perhaps the goal is to create an opaque and chaotic soundscape to the point that the listener would be lost without a program, think of Nono’s Il Canto Sospeso for reference. If these “essential truths” are a limit that is consciously chosen by a poet and a composer because they desire to achieve the effect that such structuring entails, then by all means they should; but to imply that such arbitrary and frankly 19th Century restrictions are in any way essential to the writing of poetry, especially in the context of a masterclass where the viewer is far more likely to take the words of the “master” as gospel, is something that I cannot in good conscience allow to go unquestioned.

"Spreading" and "Blessed" are also more active and alive, as they are adjectives born from verbs. Great video, by the way.

Very true! Also, "blessed" has the lovely additional meaning of "grateful".

Thank-you, Charles, for the very helpful, useful and informative tips! Just wondering: is that an accordion on your desk behind you? Also, my 3 cats (Little Girl, Romeo, & Kloud!) say "Hi!" to your Smokey! :)
