Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir

The Virtual Choir began in May 2009 as a simple experiment in social media and has since exploded into a global phenomenon, creating a user-generated choir that brings together singers from around the world in their love of music making through the use of technology, whether singing alone in their living rooms, their dorm rooms, their garages or anywhere they can connect to the internet; these videos are synchronised and combined into one single performance to create the Virtual Choir.

Successfully funded through a Kickstarter campaign, run in association with DCINY/Soaring Dreams, Virtual Choir 4: Fly to Paradise was released in July 2013, received over 8,400 submissions from 101 countries and launched at the Coronation Festival at Buckingham Palace/BBC 1.

A red curtain slowly opens. Rows of little screens, showing people of all ages and colors, fill the stage against a dark background. In the center appears 5 a man. He soon begins conducting and disappears. Then the singing images move slowly to the music. Some of them are zoomed in to show different faces. There is neither an orchestra nor an audience. The singers have never met 10 each other or practiced together. Yet a song called "Lux Aurumque" is performed by a beautiful mix of voices. This is a "virtual choir."

Wow! 3 years ago already. It was a beautiful experience being part of this worldwide choir back then, and we can even find our faces and credits among the other 17,570 singers. Hugs and encouragement to all fellow gentle singers.

I taught General Music at a middle school students begged me to start a choir. I had no idea how to do it. as soon as I did, I discovered I loved it. Thanks to a Jack-A*S Dean, I get terminated after one year. I loved directing that choir. It took me ten years and a Master of Music Education, but I have 4th/5th choir at a much more upscale middle school. I know what is must be like to "remember how to fly" but not be able to.

I'm a choral director in Canada. With covid, I was facing a crisis. How could I keep my students singing through this trying time, and how could I keep involved in the greater choral community? This came along at just the perfect time. I am very proud not only of my contributions, but those of my friends, and those of my students. I always told them that choir has the ability to bring together singers, not only in the community you live in, but globally. Unfortunately, covid broke my program, and the school is focusing on instrumental music now. HOWEVER, the students involved with this and one other virtual choir project we did with the high school will always have this to look back on. Sing on everybody!

Can you imagine what the praises in heaven are going to sound like with trillions praising the name of Jesus, and thanking God for bringing us home? The cure for sin has come to earth, and it hung on the cross to prove it worrked! We can get well, we can go home, praise the name of jesus

This might sound a bit odd but when I listen to a choir of music on a scale as large as this I cant help but feel that this is what the voice of humanity sounds like if we get past our differences and work together as a species towards something. I dont know if what im saying makes much sense but that is the only way I can describe a project such as this. Extremely moving piece and it gives me a sense of hope for humanity's future.
