Daffodils - William Wordsworth (An Inspirational Poem)

A powerful poem on finding pleasure and comfort in nature.
Read by Victor Vertunni
-
William Wordsworth was a revered English poet who was, in part, responsible for kick-starting the Romantic movement in English literature.
Inspired after finding a surprising number of daffodils during a countryside walk, Daffodils (or 'I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud') serves as something of a reminder that humanity is a part of nature and not an opposing force.

From time to time, my late English wife, while propped up on her pillows in bed, would read me this poem while I was getting ready for work. Brings back such wonderful memories of our 47 years together. Her ashes are in Iver Heath, Bucks., England, where I'll be some day.

I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed-and gazed-but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

I saw a steep hill next to the road with hundreds of daffodils growing on it while driving on a country road years ago. I was in awe over the beauty of them all. I came across this poem sometime later and it always takes me back in my mind's eye to that beautiful hill. Wordsworth had an awesome talent of touching the soul with his discriptive wordings.

Nathan Montoya Now 20 dislikes. What they don’t know is that Wordsworth has been dead for almost 200 years and his feelings aren’t hurt by their disapproval.

We learnt this poem by- heart about 53 years ago in school, still remember the poem and often delve on the beauty of the scene 'beside the lake, beneath the trees, fluttering their heads in sprightly dance' ...... 'And oft upon my couch I lie, in vacant or in pensive mood, they flash upon my inward eye, which is the bliss of solitude '.....

It’s strange how one word can affect a person this much. He was the quietest and loudest person at the same time. In the class, he didn’t talk much but he expressed much, I heard not his voice but his passion. To my high school friend who used to call me daffodils. And told me that i reminded him of daffodils from his garden in childhood.. I hope you know that I will be craving our days always.

No poets have produced poetry as wonderful as the English poets. This poem is a case in point. Yesterday I came across ALT's "...The light Brigade", vastly different but no less wonderful. I could go on all day but I won't.
