Mingus to Red Lake 5-3-14. A hang gliding film by Greg Porter

Ойын-сауық

About 8 pilots flew Mingus mountain on May 3, 2014. Altitudes were in the 15 to 17,000' range. Jeff B Johnson and I planned to XC together North in hopes of reaching the Grand Canyon 80 miles away. Strong westerly winds aloft cut our distance to 46 and 42 miles, respectively. Jeff had radio issues so we couldn't keep track of each other. Jeff got very low over Perkinsville but pulled it out and landed in Bellemont, just West of Flagstaff, and I landed at a dry lake called Red Lake, about 6 miles North of Williams, AZ. Lisa chased in the truck and we had a great day, even though we didn't make the Grand Canyon. Maybe later this season! Enjoy.

I love your description of flying and color vs the greyness that is everything else. Thankfully it's not all grey, but I get it. The world is NEVER as bright and colorful as when I'm flying :) Great video. Thank you for the work and sharing!

Hi Greg, It's an amazing, stunning and inspirating picture, thank you very much for sharing it! Absolutely my favorite on youtube! I am just about to start to hang glide. I can't wait for next spring to kick it off! I'm living in the UK. Possibly not as perfect weather conditions are there here like at your place, but we cook from what we have :)

Hi Nandor, Congratulations on taking up the sport! Be safe. Find a certified instructor, it's more important than being trained by just an experienced hang glider pilot. Instructors have the skills to pass on the knowledge, but those of his who are simply pilots have the skills but we don't know how to communicate them in the correct sequence to ensure your safety. I am glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the reply. It's folks like you that I enjoy putting them together for. Another pilot with better videos than mine is Jonathan Dietch. If you haven't seen them he is at kzread.info/dron/DnHQCdYycrtvYxSoTe0Hbw.html. All the best to you! Greg

Greg Porter That is exactly what I am going to do. Join a club, and take part on a professional training, Two years ago I spent a summer learning "proper" gliding and I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot from professional pilots, theory and practical flying as well. I agree with you, safe, before all!! Thanx for the hint, Jonathan has benn added to my channels :)

Incredible! Just wonder how long your O2 last. How much can you care with you. At the end of 63 miles, did you have any left? Yes I'm planning to go further than that. You are a great inspiration! Thank you and keep posting!

Hi Mozart, The O2 lasts a long time. I use a computerized O2 distribution system from Mountain High. It only gives oxygen when it senses you inhale through the canulla, and the amount of oxygen given depends on the altitude you are at. The 63 mile flight to Meteor Crater that you mention was at altitudes from 12,000 feet to 18,000 feet for 4.75 hours. I had only used about half of the O2 supply on that flight. Good luck with your cross country flying, and thanks for the reply and compliments! Greg

Eric Poindexter Hi Eric, The glider is a Wills Wing T2C, the harness is a Rotor. The video is shot from GoPro cameras, with the aerial taken from a Matrix S quadcopter. Glad to give you more details to help get you started in the sport. Email me at gpwrinkled at hotmail dot com if you would like. Also check our our club website at azhpa.org.

  • @gpwrinkled

Hi LZ, Arizona and other desert environments around the globe will regularly produce thermals to 15K and more during the summer months. The dry air is the key. Heights of 25K are possible in exceptional conditions, but the legal altitude limit per the FAA for hang gliders and paragliders is 18K. Any flight in excess of 12,500ft should not be attempted without an oxygen delivery system, since the low oxygen levels will impair judgement, and the effects can continue for some time even after returning to lower altitudes. See the Mingus to Meteor Crater video for an example of a high flight. I think I was over 13K for 3 hours or so, and reached 17,999ft several times. Mingus to Meteor Crater 6-7-13. A hang gliding film by Greg Porter. Hope that helped. Thanks for the reply, Greg

Hey Greg, ok, that's kind of what I thought, makes sense. I hope that one day, I'll climb that high in a hang glider. That must be amazing. Just had my first practice day on the training hill a few days ago. Looking forward to cruising through the alps now :) I should be the one thanking for the reply! :) - LZ

Hi, I have a question, when you are cruising are you in radio contact with anyone? like telling traffic what flight level you are at? I am really considering getting into the sport, i just need the money for a glider, I live in Flag, Thanks and safe flying

Hi, we are aware of the areas with controlled airspace and we avoid them so that we don't have to radio or call the airports to ask permission to enter their airspace. Come up to Mingus pretty much any weekend this summer and we will be glad to talk more about the sport and help you get started. Best regards, Greg

It appears that you have a wonderful club there. I have purchased and looking forward to participating in a H1-H2 learning package at Lookout Mt (Tennessee), and also have been trying to get in contact with two clubs that are within an hours' drive from me (mid North NC area). Both seem to be very, very hard to get members to respond to my queries. Are clubs usually very wary of beginners? Their non-communication style is quite disappointing, and I'm wondering if people already in the sport do not want beginners because of the possible liability problems it may bring to a club. In your experience, is this true, or am I imagining things? If I can't get some responses from clubs in the area, how can I fly? I'm to the point of almost thinking of not taking up hang gliding because of the lack of club enthusiasm for new pilots. Thanks! Great vids!

Sorry to hear the challenges in that area for getting hooked up with the local pilots. New pilots are welcomed and encouraged in all circles I have heard of. HG pilots by nature are an individualistic type, while I think the PG community is more gregarious. Don't give up! You will be glad you persevered. I would suggest pursuing the Lookout Mountain training and gain contacts via that route. Once you have an instructor involved you will see the doors open. Glad to answer any questions you have as you progress. My email address is at the end of any of my videos. Glad to get an email from you anytime or talk on the phone. Keep trying, it will work out and open up some incredible experiences for you. Greg
