Beautiful video, are you still flying?

Today is the first day of Spring and is snowing a lot outside (CT). I got to move to Arizona and fly as high as I possibly can.

Hi Drew and thanks for the kind words. In short, I am not sure. It has been about 2 years since I last flew. I simply seem to have lost my passion for the sport and have been focused on other things. Still have all my equipment and have times when I think I will return. I guess I'll just say that time will tell. Thanks again though, and safe flying to you! Greg

@@gpwrinkled Hi Greg , Im curious as to what killed your passion , was it an accident , event ? I haven't flown in over 30 years , just started again , ordered a new glider which will be arriving in the next 3 weeks , so for me , can't understand how one could lose a passion for a sport like ours

John jsmit - Gee good on ya for getting back to the sport. After 3 years or so of being back, which I really enjoyed every minute of, I had a cross country flight from Mingus and when I landed I realized I had been bored through the whole flight. I had my launching without buckling in to my harness experience prior to that, and my hang gliding friend Mark Knight had passed away in a dragonfly accident, but neither of those experiences were things that I was consciously aware of as influencing my loss of passion for the sport. Our focus in life was shifting to grandchildren that were coming along so perhaps that was part of it. Just not sure. Really glad for you and I think you will really enjoy the return. @@gpwrinkled Thanks mate , I saw the tribute video you made for Mark ,extremely touching , to say the least. Goes to show , bad things can happen to even the very best pilots . Reason I gave up gliding also had to do with my kids , now that they are grown up and know I have a massive insurance policy against my life ~( thanks to wife of course ) I can now focus on getting back into the air . Ill certainly "ping " you as soon as we start hitting the clouds . South Africa has some of the best sites for Gliding , ill try to send some pics along the way . Enjoy the weekend , cheers .

Hard Facts Just to be clear, the events you cite didn’t get me out of the sport. I landed one day after a short 10 mile cross country flight from Mingus and realized I hadn’t really enjoyed the flight. It lacked the enjoyment I had felt for several years. So I took a break, waiting to see if the passion would return but it hasn’t. I have several friends who have died in the sport over the years, and many years ago I crashed into the top of the towers at Sacaton Peak near Coolidge Arizona, sliding upside down in the glider down a supporting tower guy wire into the rocks below. Also broke a knee cap on another flight after scraping through the gap at South Mountain in Phoenix and landing uphill in a small rocky canyon side. Fear of death nor loss of friends didn’t pull me from the sport then or now, but rather a lack of passion. So then I wonder what has caused the lack of passion? I have a tendency to go gung ho with something for 3 or 4 years and then move on... maybe that’s it? I am not sure...

Do you guys ever launch from Mt Elden in Flagstaff? I used to see hang gliders flying there all the time not so much anymore.

Hi Lonnie, I have never flown Mt Elden and am not sure what the status is there. The launch is narrow between stands of trees. Mingus is close and a much better site. Perhaps that has something to do with it.

Busy DeBussy Good on ya! Of all the sports I have enjoyed over the years, Hang Gliding has always been the premier. From my first flight 40+ years ago this has been true. All the best to you. Safe flying!
