Actually there's this pretty popular case where Judge Judy was arguing against a teenage defendant who was an accomplice in a stabbing. Said defendant was yawning repeatedly during the conversation which caught Schindler's attention. What she means by payment from the government is what’s called Basic Allowance for Housing, or BAH. It’s an entitlement given to all service members who aren’t living in the barracks, or who have dependents, etc. it’s technically not an “earned” thing, but part of a budgeted allotment based on rank and location. Does that make sense? Btw, I know this because my husband and I are both service members (Army and Navy).

Ou are absolutely wrong he did not work for that money. Cola, which is what there talking about is money above what the soldiers base pay is. The soldier works for his base pay and HIS FAMILY is supposed to get the rest. It money the military intended he soldiers to use to provide for his family, not himself. The military can actually charge him for fraud if someone wanted to push the issue. I would be very surprised that after this his finances don't change.

@@babiifrshj07yeah but that BAH is for the spouse when you’re not there. It’s not free money for him to spend. He wouldn’t have gotten BAH if he was single. That money since they weren’t with him was definitely supposed to go to the spouse. I know because I was Finance in the Army. I had an Asian mom come in frazzled because her husband left her there with a little bit of money. We had to contact his unit and the unit legally put the paperwork in to have money taken from his paycheck for his wife. I took her to the bank to open an account since I had car seats for my kids. I took her to the commissary so they can have food in the house. She needed diapers and food for her baby. It was a huge mess. My husband tried it with me but I was Finance in the Army so he gave me my allotment and a General POA. It’s why they have BAH with or without dependents. He was getting BAH with dependents. Japan is NOT a deployment. It’s a duty station. Who is he fighting out there? Anime? Stop the BS! My husband tried that same trick when he went to Korea. I know exactly how to read orders. He just simply didn’t turn the paperwork in to add his dependents onto his orders. He can fool someone else but he definitely CANNOT fool me. Civilian spouses simply don’t know any better so they take the word of their military spouses. My husband could NEVER EVER play that game with me. He had grief for a whole year while he was in Korea. I’m my parents rebel child. I was living my best life. 😌😌😌😌😌 One monkey don’t stop any show. I don’t mind traveling by myself.

Stay at home mothers whose income come from the father/other provider are not doing anything wrong. This man gets his money from "us" because he serves in the military. JJ isn't sitting on a military base anywhere defending this country. He is entitled to his pay because he is serving us, JJ and America. I absolutely agree. JJ is always harsh and cruel to people who she deems are getting handouts from the government, and then brings it around to her taxes making these handouts possible. Everyone pays taxes madam, including the wife who is working three jobs. Besides, as the defendant is in the armed forces, his dependents are entitled to receive certain sums of money for their welfare whenever he's deployed on service. It's not a handout. JJ earns millions of dollars a month for working as a TV judge and shooting for probably half a month. Why does she begrudge government aid to the disabled and people in the services?

This happens a lot when military wives want to stay in the states instead of traveling to Japan or Germany, etc with their husband. The soldier receives BAH (a housing allowance) for his dependents that he WOULD NOT be getting if he were single. It sounds like he was sending her some money, so that’s good. It would be unethical for him to keep that money all to himself when it’s given to him to support his family.

I get so sick and F'ing tired of people acting like tax payers are the only income for military. It's as if people that do this don't understand military members pay taxes, too. Dependents don't make a windfall. As for the Defendant, he was withholding the money that was supposed to be designated for his wife and child. He was using that money like an allowance for whenever he felt like it. He didn't pay anything where he was living. I know that duty station well, and he had everything he needed on and semi-off base. His wife was paying their bills as well as caring for their daughter, vehicle maintenance, etc... We knew so many like him in our 25 years. They get married so they can make the extra money and convince their spouse to live at home to "save money," meanwhile living like a bachelor with 95% of the paycheck to blow on partying off-duty.

My favorite brother in law was a career man. Though retired now, he still puts in a solid 50 hours a week. My sister married him and adopted his daughter, she already had a fully disabled son. They had another son together, who is also fully disabled. Most of the time they traveled as a family. Five bases, three continents and seven off base housing over a 25 year career. My sister is educated, runs her home and became fluent in several languages over time. When stationed where work was available, like Germany, my sister worked full time, even with two disabled boys and a husband frequently deployed. The BAH often helped keep them above water. Between medical costs, travel, clothing, food allowance provided as benefits they were able to travel the world. But they worked for everything they have today and sacrificed greatly for my brother in law to fullfil his dream of serving his country, living a faith driven life and providing for the family. There were no hand outs, as JJ hinted around. God bless and protect those serving us, to allow us freedoms like these women have taken for granted. Go Army Green!

Being deployed overseas and working for the military can be very intense. They deserve to be well compensated, including family benefits in my opinion. These people are pulled away from their lives, friends, and families, often for months or years at a time. That isn't an easy thing for most people to do. They IMMEDIATELY contacted his command with a letter stating that he was to have a separate allotment sent to me and our 3 children because the Army gave extra specifically for housing for his dependents. He was threatened legal ramifications if this wasn't done. And it was sent through the military as a separate allotment to me. Sounds like they were separated, but she just outlined $1400 per month he was paying, depending on what branch he's in child support may be capped at 1/6 his pay. He is entitled to a housing allowance whether or not they are together, that much is true and a BAH at that rate suggests that he's an officer, and being deployed he's still entitled to both bachelors quarters and a home of his own. If they are separated and they do not share a home, he's still entitled to a home of his own and therefore the BAH and since he has a kid, not having her as a spouse would make 0 difference in regard to his BAH.

Defendant had a choice to give his wife money when he was in Japan but preferred not to and they lived on base housing but hearing this first part of JJ he lived in bachelor quarters which is odd, usually military men or woman with a family live on the base since living off base is expensive.

If he qualified for a BAH in that amount he's an officer and they have access to bachelor's quarters but also have a right to their own place. He would have gotten a housing allowance regardless of having dependents, so he's not lying and the $200 more sounds on par to what the military offers for dependents. She also just outlines roughly $1400 per month he was giving her. She should know how to have some chill because she has 1 kid with him and she may not know that child support in the military is entirely different to what a court can grant. Right now she gets many military benefits, including Tricare, after the divorce, no Tricare for her.

Jj, some parents don’t charge their children rent no matter how old, this is the one exception to someone not paying rent imo, it should be a voluntary thing not a requirement, imho, to help them get on their feet until they get their own

So at any point where his wife or his child was not getting support from him or the government she could have went to his commanding officer and jam him up real good with the military. Why didn't she? This case is clearly about greed and you can tell it's the mother-in-law leading the charge because she wants the money
