Mike Tyson vs James Buster Douglas - Full Fight - 2-11-1990
Bout Summary:
Douglas controlled the fight from the beginning, working behind a strong jab on the outside and tying up Tyson whenever the champion got inside. This was Tyson's third fight without Kevin Rooney, his long-time trainer, and the incompetence of his new trainers, Aaron Snowell and Jay Bright, was never more evident. Tyson's left eye started to swell by the fifth round, but Tyson's corner didn't have an enswell, a standard piece of equipment for any corner, so Snowell filled a latex glove with ice and put that on Tyson's eye between rounds. Teddy Atlas, Tyson's former amateur trainer, said, "Those two guys couldn’t train a fish to swim.” With six seconds left in the eighth round, Tyson dropped Douglas with a right uppercut. Douglas got up at the count of nine, and that was the end of the round. Douglas regained control in the ninth round and wobbled Tyson with a left. In the tenth round, Douglas hurt Tyson with a right uppercut, then followed up with a combination, finishing with a left that put Tyson down for the first time in his career. Tyson put his knocked-out mouthpiece in backwards and tried to get up, but his legs were too wobbly. Referee Octavio Meyran waved the fight over and wrapped his arms around the rubbery-legged Tyson.

Buster Douglas didn't just beat Mike Tyson, he beat Don King and his money, empire and the betting world. Buster truly was in great shape for the fight against Tyson. Iron Mike was never the same.

Buster wasnt intimidated. After loosing his beloved mum, he probably thought nothing hurts more than that-not even Mike Tyson....hence: fearless. Godbless them both, these days theyre both well and Mike has never been a more brilliant person in every way.

@jasonlinton9902 ...Irrelevant! Tyson didn't train, took Douglas for granted, and paid the ultimate price for it. The journeyman wasn't intimidated by the heavyweight champion, PERIOD!!! The latter fired Kevin Rooney, and went along with Don King. Tyson knew all about King's dirty track record. Holyfield, Lewis and Foreman weren't intimidated by Tyson, either!

I watched an interview with Mike Tyson. Tyson stated he won that fight. Tyson stated when JBD was knocked down in the eight round, the ref counted very slow and that it was up to about 15-16 seconds. I watched a replay of the fight. From the time Buster hit the canvas, I waited a second or two for the ref to start the count, then hit my stop watch. The slow count accusation from Tyson, Tyson is correct. I counted 14.45 seconds and even waited few seconds before hitting the start button. Doesn't change that Tyson was knocked down, had the same long count but wasn't able to recover.

Just because the referee counts to 10 doesn’t imply it has to be exactly 10 seconds. Buster was ready to get up when he needed to. And he did.

But the referee helped buster a lot and counted to 10 very, very slowly, normally the referees count much faster then the fight would have been over with a knockout. At 9 it was already 12 seconds and if the round hadn't been over, Buster would have lost anyway.

Douglas completely exposed Tyson in this fight, and since then, Tyson hadn't been the same fighter. Douglas showed the formula for bigger fighters to beat Tyson, taking advantage of their size and long reach, that is, using jabs and grabing him and smothering him when he's close, which frustrates Tyson so much that he throws away his game plan and resorts to thowing big punches without much head movements. Soon Tyson runs out of steam in later rounds like in this fight, eigther getting knocked out or simply giving up.

I dont understand why Mike was always hearing and being told "u used the jab alot or u had great movement when u were at your best. Etc etc. Yet he still didnt go back to doing the important things that made him successful. Not just this fight, but post prison version of mike as well...after prison he watched tapes of him in his prime, like when he was in his early 20s, but still didnt fight the way he used to. Why not?? When u know what made u successful and have to go back to that to stop being unsuccessful, wouldnt u just start doing those things again??? He was only 29 his first fight out of prison. He could have beaten holyfield if he fought him how he used to. I wont get into how dirty and cheating holyfield is though.

Holyfield does everything better escort one punch power especially on the inside. Wasn’t afraid of tyson and tyson complained constantly. Holyfield got his ear bitten off and was ready to fight. There are levels to mental and physical toughness. Tyson never won a fight he was losing at any point never came back from adversity never stopped anyone past 7 Mike was a savage but he was a hyped product and the refs would let him get away with murder in the ring. He should have been dqd five fights in a row at one point Nobody would commission him in the us

“ Buster Douglas best win was Trevor Berbeck and Greg page who were regional champions “ Well tyson beat Berbick to become the youngest hw champion in history. Douglas beat Berbeck 2 years later and he was 33. Then they say Greg page as well Greg page was Tyson’s sparring partner who was beating tyson up and dropped him and they called off the public sparring session they charged money to see after a round. Buster also beat Oliver McCall who was Tyson’s main sparring guy who tyson could drop neither could any man ever. And you can watch McCall and tyson spar and see yourself there’s a lot of footage. McCall kod lennox Lewis. Tyson is 23 here. And past his prime people say. 23. People say tyson was in his prime under cus. So so his prime was 15-19. Or so you want to go to Rooney and push it to age 21-22. Can you spot the narrative. Tyson was and is awesome. He never could fight through adversity. Never stopped a guy after 7 rounds. Just an interesting perspective on how tyson was built up beating mostly bums at this point in their career. Buster fight at worst equal opponents. As with mike wasn’t mentally focused in all and would fluctuate in weight 60 lbs a year. Rattle off Tyson’s best wins at this point. Buster beat Tyson’s claim to fame youngest hw champ. Beat the iron chinned McCall who tyson would have had a massive struggle. Watch their sparring sessions. Greg page who was dropping mike in public sparring sessions. Tony tucker you want to give tyson lhw spinks. Pinklannthomas. ? Washed up Bruno who tyson fought twice? And was just a terrified Britt. Buster had almost 40 fights and a handful of losses. He wasn’t a scrub but he could box especially on point. Evaluate both guys careers going into this Tyson clobbered 30 + hobos basicallly. Awesome to watch. Buster Not elite by any means Buster. Mitch Greene of all people …. tony tucker can give an example of how a Long and rangey guy tyson gets frusterated. And even on the inside tyson holds on. And never stopped anyone past 7 rounds. Still one of my all time favorites. But I swear 99% of comments have only seen highlights of mike. People are even calling tyson a gentleman. He was always talking about killing people in the ring. Trying to

Oh so that’s why Mike got kod. It was the sustained whooping and being outclassed. Say it was a long count. Many things happen where great fighters overcome adversity. Tell me a fight where tyson every came back from adversity? Tell me when he won a fight when he was the nail and not the hammer at any point. He has 0 stoppages after round 7. Tyson was special just didn’t have the mental fortitude of other great fighters and couldn’t handle adversity. Tyson is one of my favorite fighters was certainly rooting for him in eve fry fight he ever had. But there’s a superhuman narrative that isn’t true. It robablynappears that way if you just watch highlights of his fights

.............and I thought we had horrible, corrupt judges here in the states. Those 2 Japanese judges were definitely corrupt. Because how in the hell could any sane person with good eyesight have "Tyson ahead on points up to being KO'd".......let alone "scored the fight even up to Tyson being KO'd". That was disgusting to say the least. Tyson only won 1 rd, when he knocked Douglas down, and the referee's count was acceptable. It was NOT "too long of a count" like Tyson claimed. Douglas not only won this fight fair & square.......in addition to knocking him out, he beat the living shit out of Tyson.........pure & simple.
