TNT Tony Tucker was an amazing fighter, real life Apollo Creed, fast, stylish, elegant. He was afraid of no one and went the distance with prime Tyson and prime Lennox Lewis. Sadly he didn't achieve what he may could have but still deserves all respect and recognition.

Miss my father watching these fights. Just lost him last year, yet the stuff way back hits me as hard as the stuff we shared recently. I won't be the same but will try and continue to make your proud. Love you dad

Used to watch fights with my grandfather... we went to the delahoya vs. Forbes fight. He had a handicapped placard we parked right next to a rolls Royce in front of the Home Depot Center lol

Ser Uresto In 1988 Holmes was in his late 30s, but not at all flabby and washed up. Tyson KOd a fit and hungry Holmes that year. Prime Evander Holyfield struggled to beat 42 year old Holmes over 12 RNDs in 1992!

This was the first boxing fight I watched as a kid (9yr old) w/ my dad who is gone now. Man this brings back memories....

Tucker was on top of the world in this match. I doubt he ever felt as good as he did here, he took iron mine and he stood toe to toe with him. Maybe 20 people out of the five billion alive at the time could do what he did that night. What an athlete.

Tyson once said the most dangerous fighter is the most relaxed fighter. And Tucker seems to be very relaxed throughout. He did superb.

The funny thing is, he kind of disappeared after this fight. He was always highly-rated all through the late 80s - I know because I read The Ring back then - but Tony Tucker didn't resurface until 1993, when he and Lennox Lewis fought for the vacated WBC title, after Riddick Bowe refused to face Lewis. It's a shame. Tucker should have had more fights in the late 80s.

@@marshall7170 I already said why. Because he got in the ring with prime Mike Tyson…. because he stuck to his game plan and did not let Mike control the fight… because he lasted as long as he did with prime Tyson… and because he didn’t get his face broken.

It's cool going back & watching these old fights again i hadn't seen this since the day they fought ,i had forgot just how big tucker was he was a big man .

I just want to say Mills Lane did a great job as a referee during this fight. These gigantic men tied up a lot and he handled it all well.

Tucker certainly loves Mike. He tried to hug him throughout the fight!!

It’s called fighting smart. Tyson wouldn’t box with Tucker at long range, he doesn’t have the reach and he would get outboxed. Tucker wouldn’t exchange punches at close range that’s Tysons range, so he ties up Tysons arms. Both fighters want to control the distance at their preferred range, so they move accordingly, Tucker backs up and Tyson comes forward.

Haha yeah! Tucker was doing good as you heard cause he landed a punch in the 1st round. After the 4th they said he was doing good cause he landed that punch in the 1st round. Before the 8th started they were pointing out how good Tony was doing cause he landed that punch in the 1st round. In between the 11th & 12th they were discussing how good Tucker was doing cause he landed that punch in the 1st round. After the fight Ray was so impressed with Tucker's performance cause he landed that punch in the 1st round. Hahaha yo how many times you gonna talk about this shit!?!? They kept bringing it up even though it did nothing & he was to scared to throw it again cause Tyson would counter it. I don't know why it always amused & annoyed me that they were praising him because of one fuckn punch in 12rnds. That's how you know this guy was special. One landed punch was so rare they talked about it all fuckn fight lol wow!!!

Tyson comes in constantly so Tucker caught him with an uppercut in 1st round and staggered Tyson, not many fighters during this era could even hit Tyson so props to Tucker for showing no fear and being a tough sob

I competed against Tony as an amateur. This was right after he won the Pan am games. He became the number one rated 178 lbs amateur in the world defeating Sixto Soria after defeating him in the world games. Tony and I went the distance in a three round slugfest. He got the decision

Wrong! Douglas also fought Tyson with great confidence. He was not afraid of Mike. And to me, Douglas performed better than all of Tyson's other opponents.

@DB Cooper's MoneyBags BS! Douglas had lots of setbacks, including the death of his mom, just about 23 days before his fight against Tyson. His team even thought he would not go on with the fight as scheduled. But not only did Douglas chose to participate, but he used those setbacks as motivation. And Buster produced what many (myself including) believe to be perhaps the best performance of his entire boxing career, that night against Tyson. He did just about everything right. He fought a smart fight, and with great confidence..showing he wasn't intimidated by Tyson. He also fought aggressively from the start to finish. And to me, Buster fought Tyson more cleanly than both Tucker and Holyfield did. He wasn't holding unto Tyson quite like the other two pugilists mentioned were. In fact, Tyson was at times holding unto Buster. And in the case of Holyfied, he was doing the "headbutt" thing, as usual. Douglas did none of that. The man is totally deserving of his victory.

@DB Cooper's MoneyBags I am not denying the significance of training. It plays an important role for success. But, you should not attempt to diminish Buster Douglas' well-deserved victory (as though it doesn't matter) because "Tyson wasn't trainning at that point." First of all, was it Buster's fault? And even though we agree on the importance of training, it doesn't guarantee a victory each time an athlete sets out to compete. And based upon my observation, Tyson has had some victories of which he did not perform as well as he did against Buster. So, what's you point? You also made it appear as though losing a loved one (especially a parent) isn't a big deal....like it is supposed to motivate people. If that were the case, why do others (especially close friends) offer their support to those who lost loved ones? I've seen people who were non-alcoholics indulge in alcohol, after losing a loved one. And some even ended up doing drugs, also. It is heartbreaking to lose a loved one. But Buster CHOSE to use the death of his mom as his source of inspiration and motivation. He did it for her! Now, in his fight against Holyfield, Buster wasn't as focused as he had been against Mike. He got careless, as he misfired on a hook and went off balanced. And Holyfield caught him with a punch at that same moment. This could've happened to anyone. It reminds me of Briggs fight against Lewis (although Lewis never touched him the last time he landed on canvas and the referee stopped the fight). Briggs just went flat down after Lewis dodged his shot. Lol. But I brought this up to show how that a boxer can really lost his balance and became very vulnerable after misfiring a hook. But, I agree that little or lack of training on the part of Douglas may be the main reason why his career went downhill after his victory over Tyson. Training is very important to all. But especially to someone like Buster, who isn't as naturally talented as Tyson and other boxers are.

@DB Cooper's MoneyBags Once again, BS! And I'm not related to Douglas. The only thing Douglas had going for him that night, was the way he performed. It was the performance of his career. And he knew he had to produce such a performance in order to defeat Tyson. No boxer has ever hit Tyson with heavy shots quite like Douglas did. Douglas fought a near perfect fight. Even before he knocked out Tyson, he continually stunned him and caused him to back off with heavy shots. You should go back to watch the fight again, and educate yourself. I give Buster his due respect. And I am a Tyson fan.

Tucker was a class act and one of the best challengers to Tyson. Long arms, height advantage, effective jab, powerful straight right, a moving target, all of these factors diminished his opponents knockout potential. Good fight.

Tucker had a lot of talent, but he was a noted cokehead in the prime of his career and always had injury problems (even in the Tyson fight, he entered with a broken right hand). Unfortunately, not everyone wanted to fight Tucker due to his stellar amateur career, size, and gifted skill set. He was a high-risk, low-reward fight, which is why Michael Spinks refused to defend his IBF Heavyweight Title against Tucker. He opted instead to fight Gerry Cooney. During Tucker’s comeback in the 90s, he was next in line to fight Big George Forman, who had just defeated Michael Moore to be the oldest Heavyweight Champion in history. George openly admitted to “ducking” Tucker due to the latter's risks.

I always looked forward to these events during the Tyson era. Loved the excitement prior to the fights.

UK Boxing fans will remember getting up in the middle of the night to watch Tyson's fights,( Long before 'Sky' was heard of). Even though Mike won, the day after everyone said ' Tucker gave him a good fight'.

Tucker hadn't lost in nine years and was at his best here. It's just hard to take anything away from Tyson's performance here and people are SO critical of Tyson.

@@crimsonchin9632 Well, that's kind of what I'm saying. Tony Tucker may well have been the guy that had exactly what it took to beat Tyson in 87-88. He had the tools to beat Tyson that everyone said could be his kryptonite. Was he one of the greatest fighters ever? No. But he was damn good and you could see the tall fighter that could take a punch here, and Tyson adjusted his fight style to beat him with speed, defense, and stamina. What I'm saying is that even though people sometimes overrate Tyson, in a lot of ways he's underrated and people ignore so much of what he was able to accomplish. He beat a guy probably 9-3 who probably had the best chance to beat him at that time, and they focus more on the 3 rounds that he lost as something bad about him rather than the fact that Tucker was just a really good fighter. This is one of Tyson's best showings. A lot more impressive than his 91 second knockout of Spinks, I think.

8 rounds for Mike, 3 rounds for Tucker, 1 even round... but this was considered prime Tyson toughest fight.

Boxing's not exactly famed for honest, objective unbiased scoring judges though. Nobody who knows and has a shred of honesty had it scored that way.

Man this is between my 6th or 7th time watching this fight & every time I enjoy it more then the last time toney tucker laid the blueprint in 86 on how to fight Tyson if you are taller heavier with a longer reach both these warriors gave their all but for Tyson to go the distance for the 1st time in his career makes this even more a classic

The Spy : Which Mercante, junior or senior? In any case, yeah, they were both great, with senior getting the extra point for poking Joe Frazier in the eye, but Mills is still my favorite. My least favorite, by the way, is Richard Steele, notorious for stopping fights prematurely. His decision to stop Meldrick Taylor’s fight against Julio Cesar Chavez two seconds before the final bell, with Taylor leading on two scorecards, still makes me mad as hell.

@@handymanny6615 But that's my point. You'd have to be a real boxing aficionado to know who Tucker is. Walk up to anyone - even someone who hates boxing and never watches it - and ask who Ali is. They'll know who you're talking about. Ask that same person who Tucker is, and you'll get a , "Who is that?" I'm somewhere in the middle. I'll follow the big fights and love doing it, and i know all the big names, but I'm not a student of the craft by any means.

I fought Tony as an amateur back 1980 right after he won the Pan Am games. Tony and I went the three rounds. We went the distance with him getting the decision. I had our fight on video at one time but before being able to put on KZread the video got accidentally erased!! I do have others on KZread including me sparring with Floyd Patterson. Awesome memories from the seventies and eighties!!!

My uncle fought the Brown bomber, Joe Louis in an expeditionary fight in Nuremberg Germany .. During ww-2 ..He broke Louis jaw And they stop the fight and the place went crazy and they called in The MPs, lol ..May uncle was in General Patton's 3 Rd Army .He was one of the Generals body guard ...

Leroy Combee, and he an his causin and high school football 🏈 team had A boxing 🥊🥊 school here in town in the 30s Dewey Fussel ,my great uncle trained young boxers here . they all were short stocky Young Man who played a lot of sports What they used to call 🍀 Four letter athletes . They were all family a bunch of Rough Young Man who love to fight and love to rumble The school they created lasted until the 70s believe it or not ..But there was an accident where a young man suffered a brain concussion and died in training .And the school closed .

Leroy ended up in Germany in The third Army and Cought the Eye of The 3rd Army commender General Patton . Because Patton loved Boxing .And would come to The big GI spots gym recreation center in Nuremberg Germany And watch the Guys fight .. The General made my uncle Leroy one of his personal Body guards . At 17 he was a golden Glove 🥊 champion . And how he ended up in the ring with Joe Louis was a story in itself lol ..Joe Louis was I believe drafted .And sent to Germany .But because he was the world champion boxer at the time ,the military desided to have him promote war bond's by traveling all over Europe giving expeditionary fights for the USO and entertaining the troops . His promoters would some times arange Show fights , Where They would offer anyone $500.00 Dollars if they could stay in the ring With Joe for one round .. Every one to include The General wanted Leroy to gave it a shot .He jumped in the ring And blasting a divistating upper cut that Knocked Joe Louis out of the Ring braking his Jaw ..And the crowd went bolistic absolutely insane .It got so out of hand with fights breaking out all over the place .The MPs and Shore petrol had to be called in to break it up .. The promotion people didn't want to pay Leroy , saying he wasn't supposed to kill The champion ! Just say I'm the ring with him.. General Patton Stepped in and Made them pay up ..This was all covered up by the press of the day LoL .. Think you for asking, Mr.Dorsey 💪👊🇺🇸🥊💘

Tony Tucker will never be considered one of the greats of all time, but he was certainly one of the greats of his generation. Tucker went the distance with a prime undefeated Tyson.

1:14:58 as someone in Curry’s camp, I am still amazed at Tyson’s boxing IQ. Dare I say, right now, Mike Tyson understands boxing and it’s history better than anyone on the planet earth. He was an still is a walking/talking encyclopedia of boxing.

I will never forget an incident that happened about 25 years ago. There were 2 little old ladies, probably in their late 70s-early 80s. They were in the frozen food section & there was "Tyson" brand frozen chicken. One of the ladies picked up a bag, giggled, & said something like "Ohhh....like that boxer....". 😂 That's how popular Tyson was. Even elderly women who probably never watched boxing, knew who he was. "Mike Tyson" was a household name.

I agree and saw an interview with Joe Rogan and Tyson and Tyson gave kudos to Rooney on how he was such a good trainer for him. It was interesting that Tyson said that after the Spinks fight King came in and got rid of everyone but Tyson said why we getting rid of Kevin. Was very interesting

In this fight Tyson also tried to win with one punch. Tucker didn't use hid jab, what Douglas did later. Tyson was becaming simpler, and conflict between them would happen anyway, because Rooney would push him do more.

First round Tucker didn't taste Mikes pouch...after tasting Tyson pouches...Tony was scared of Mikes power pouch and gave distance and search for gaps but mike made him overloaded with pouches and didnt give him any breathing space...however, Tony is a great fighter completed r12

My buddy sparred with Tony Tucker in Detroit. He’s amazing and also a Marine vet. Tony Tucker was the man.

This was when all the big fights were on HBO and not PPV. Miss those days.

Man, Mills Lane was one great ref. He was on those clinches before they had a sec to become 5 seconds. Really kept the pace of the fight lively and entertaining. Not only that, but the fighters respected him subconsciously knowing that he was flying all over the place, too.

James Tillis gave Tyson a good fight in 1986 losing a fairly close 10 round decision.

For those who don't know: Tony Tucker hurt his hand in sparring leading up to the fight. The uppercut that nearly knocked Tyson's head off shattered Tucker's hand and he says it's the worst pain he's ever felt in the ring. After this, he said he had to pull more of an Ali and do some tricks (obviously had to clutch more) - Tucker was a beast and lasted 12 rounds with prime Tyson with one hand. He also had a war with Buster Douglas just 3 months earlier which he won.

This is really one of the great forgotten fights. Tyson out of his comfort zone, going the distance, looking not quite like himself. Tucker was a monster too but on the receiving end of things. He couldn't land a punch, he took a lot, but avoided the big Tyson hit that would have ended things early which is a lot more than most of his opponents could claim.

Well maybe the Heavyweight division might be a boring. There have been exciting fights overall lately. Plus, a lot of people that don’t know boxing like “that” are probably watching Tyson fights because Wilder said that he would knock Tyson out-therefore they may be doing their homework in order to make an accurate assessment.

Although this is true, we were looking for the best fights back the as well. With that being said.... I as a boxing fan since the age of 5 years old have been disappointed with boxing for quite some time because of the cherry picking that Money May created. Not taking away what he has accomplished because he is filthy rich for doing his thing. My thing is it almost started to become trend. He kind of is steering Tank Davis that way. However, I have been satisfied with the fact that the beat are fighting each other like the DLH, Mosley, Forrest (RIP), Quartey, Wright, Trinidad, Vargas, (etc) Era. Mickey Garcia didn’t have to fight Spence but he did. Danny Garcia didn’t have to fight Thurman or Porter but he did. They both could have cherry picked and still remained undefeated. Porter didn’t have to fight Brook but he did. Thurman didn’t have to fight Porter but he did. These are the best guys fighting each other. Spence fought Brook and Porter as well. Thurman also didn’t have to fight Manny Pacquiao-Yes it was a big money fight but he could have still had is 0 and just sat tight for everyone else to fight and made a big money “fights” later. All these fights for the most part have been just as action packed as this TYSON-TUCKER fight (of course this fight had more hype for obvious reasons but as far as action goes....I’m just saying). If those fights were boring to you then I don’t know what to tell you. I would like to see Brook and Spence fight again at 154-when Spence is done with 147. Now if we can just get the lighter weight guys Gary Russel, Teofimo Lopez, Lomachenko, and gervonta Davis to fight each other....that would be great!

Oddly, Tyson didn't look very comfortable on the inside - he usually held when in close. Most of his damage was done from mid-range.

Mike Tyson is a top 5 greatest heavyweight of all time.

Tucker did his thing here. Gave Tyson his best fight in HIS true prime between 96 and 1990...

you should never judge a fighter on the basis of one or two mediocre performances....I could easily say ali was almost koed by henry cooper and tysons a beast compared to cooper...but that's stupid....on both their best nights, ali vs Tyson would be spectacular action with most likely a late tko for ali….unless damato is in the picture, then who knows

Remember this fight to this day. I’m a Tyson fan and always will be. Mike won, but I couldn’t have garnered more respect for any fighter more than Tony Tucker. Both warriors.

Great fight! Nobody wanted to fight Tucker after this. Still say this Tyson's best fight because he had to earn it!

I remember watching this back then and thinking that Tyson wasn’t the normal Tyson. This is when he started to drift away from D’Amato’s teaching. Lazier footwork, less shifting...etc,etc,etc...

Stoned Again Correct, Tucker was a very good boxer, but I once saw him lose a bizarre fight against UK boxer Herbie Hide, and to this day I am convinced that was a fix. Hide was an up and coming fighter with a big punch, but an inferior boxer to Tucker (Bowe destroyed Hide in a WC title fight) Tucker knows how to spoil a fight but he fought an unusually cautious fight, and was blown out in 2 -3 rounds.
