Having obliterated almost every opponent during 1985/86 I always look at 87 as Tyson's apprenticeship year at top level. He fought two 12 rounders, a round 6 ko and a round 7 ko. That experience was invaluable and set him up for 3 devastating victories in 1988. Tucker on that night fought his best fight and would have given any heavyweight of any era problems.

Tony Tucker was a very underrated fighter who for some reason could never land big fights except on two occasions. He had this competitive fight with Tyson at his absolute best. He lost to Lennox Lewis in 1993 but that's when he was a little past it and he still gave Lewis a pretty good fight Even George Foreman wanted nothing to do with him, which I suspect was because Foreman simply wasn't interested in a tough fight after beating Moorer. Though at that point in his career Tucker was no more dangerous than Shannon Briggs who Foreman fought a couple of years later so its rather curious. But with a little better management and promotion Tucker had the potential to be an ATG.

WOW! I actually watched this fight live in Vegas with some friends on Aug 1st, 1987, the day before my 19th birthday. During the match Michael Spinks and his entourage walked right past us and sat just a few rows above where we were sitting. Between rounds the crowd would turn to where Spinks was sitting and taunt him into challenging Tyson for a title bout. Almost a year later that matched happened. Ironically, James Buster Douglass was on the under card for the Spinks match, and nearly 2-years later "Tokyo" Douglas would accomplish the biggest surprise upset in sports history. Great times to be a young guy and following the fight game. PS- And nooo...... I didn't wake-up the next morning with a Tiger in my hotel bathroom. That happened during my Vegas bachelor party years later.

He’s beaten Olympic gold medal winners who were undefeated as professionals when they faced mike & if he didn’t ko them he won almost every round against them. He beat heavyweight champions & former heavyweight champions & if he didn’t ko them he once again won almost every round against them. You have to understand that the standards are always changing when talking about Tyson. They hate him so much they discredit other fighters just to discredit him. Also not every guy was afraid of mike when they fought but it still didn’t matter, they were dominated the same way the other fighters were. In his 37 fights with Rooney he never once was cut, swelled up or bruised! That’s insane man cause he was there to be hit. He constantly came forward & got inside close but it was still so hard to catch him clean. Had he stayed with Rooney they would have had too ask Mike to retire cause he was not getting be beat.

I don’t think he hit any of his bread and butter combos bang on the whole time. Tony Tucker had a phenomenal chin and his footwork really helped him evade early on. Tucker was somewhat competitive but spent a lot of the fight holding Tyson. He did what he had to do to survive the 12 rounds. He did not use his right hand enough as he had hurt it while training for this fight. Like I said before, this video was edited very well but is not representative of how good the fight actually was. As far as Wilder is concerned, I have seen his fights with Fury and that's about it. Don't really follow boxing today. I feel half of Tysons success in the ring were the mediocre competition he faced throughout his career. Tony Tucker was a great boxer. First class athlete. Mike went in like a bison with little beauty in his fight. Landed more punches. They were both good.

In this match you always see the ability of Iron Mike to continue fighting to the end. Tucker ran and tied all the time bringing some shots but fighting less than Tillis. The high height and high experience saved him from the carpet. the only thing Tyson in this match was more "listless" than usual but still explosive and I think it was because he had not reached the maximum physical form. It is written in his book True. Iron Mike is still too superior and if they fought again I'm sure he would have knocked him out without problems. Obviously, any KO artist, however, always finds someone who manages to go all the way, whether by tactics or by heart.

I don't think it's a matter of maximum physical form, mike Tyson hasn't grown since he was 13 years old. I don't think he would've knocked out Tucker that easy either. Tucker was a solid contender who used to do a thousand push ups a day. Mike felt confortable holding on Tucker probably because he was getting a free ride to a UD and Tucker complied.

True. I think in terms of physical strength, Tyson was at his peak in 2 fights against Ruddock. Again, Im talking about physical condition, not technique. In both fights against Ruddock, Mike took tons of big punches and keep firing back even more. Even though it was his 40th fight, Tyson actually was only 25 at the time.

Tony did well here. You can see what was to come in late 87 and all of 88 leading up to the Spinks fight. Just utter destruction. Then things started to come apart slowly. What a time I remember it all clearly. The absolute bad-ass-ness. The sporting world stopped whenever he had a fight on.

I watched this fight back in 87. Tucker was a formidable opponent. The style reminded me of Lennox Lewis. He could have been like Lennox Lewis with better promotion and bigger fights. He hung with Tyson told a toe nearly beating him and lasted 12 rounds. Not only did he nearly beat Tyson in this fight but nearly did it but they Jerry curl. Respect!

This was Mike's best win in his prime. Before this, Tucker hadn't lost a fight since his amateur days nine years prior. He trained for years in the Kronk gym in Detroit and I remember reading a Sport Illustrated article where Emmanuel Steward rated about his athleticism and natural instincts. After this fight, Ticker apparently went into a depression amd had problems with drugs. Too bad because he was a real talent.
