    This is what a lot of Tyson contrarians just don't understand when they put on those rose-colored glasses and marvel at the old fighters while downplaying Mike. Tyson WAS one of those old school fighters coming to the ring. Dempsey haircut, no socks, no robe, full sweat before entering the ring. A mindset from Cus who was born in the early 1900's and watched all those great men in person. Coached Mike and had Jim Jacobs give him a gigantic fighting library Mike would watch every night after training all day. He was from the greatest of the old guard coming to destroy those that aren't near as dedicated or who understood the craft on his level. Tyson would have one those records of 140 wins if he fought once a week with those gloves and rules. He probably would've killed someone eventually. Cus would've had him piling up bodies at 16.

    They did tho.. Tyson has losses in the amateurs with Cus as his manager. When Cus died Mike was only like 10 fights into his pro career.. He didnt win the heavyweight title until wayyy after that. And he lost in his Prime to Buster Douglas.. All that woulda, coulda, shoulda, doesnt mean much. He lost against every great fighter he ever faced

    @@YourMothersMan amateurs are completely different. He was an emotional wreck in 1990 and never should have been in the ring. Maybe prime physically but but emotionally. He beat a lot of great fighters.

  • @perpetualmotion357

    @perpetualmotion357

    10 ай бұрын

    @@artvandelay837 And if his head isn't in the game, lacking interest, not training like he should've been, then his conditioning is going to be nowhere near where it should be with his reflexes and timing all out of whack. This is exactly what Cus meant when he said he believes fighting at that level is 75 percent mental. When you're focused and motivated, your physical conditioning follows suit. Mike began fighting in an era of the big money fights and ppv. Champions were not fighting near as frequently as they did back in the day because there was way more bullsh*t you had to go through making big fights happen. There was no more bum of the month club for guys that held the title. This was actually a pretty big detriment for a guy like Mike, who needed that constant distraction of a fight coming up to keep his skills sharpened, which his style of fighting especially called for because it's more physically taxing than a lot of other ways of boxing. For anyone that doesn't think so, try it out. Be the physical aggressor while at the same time being the more elusive one. Your timing has to be pin-point if you're the one who's constantly coming forward while also being the better elusive fighter. Guys like Mike and Joe Frazier were always going to have shorter primes than guys like Mayweather and Holmes. For those thinking Tyson was still in his prime just because he was young physically seem to be lacking a huge understanding of the fight game. A 22 year old swimmer who hits the pool 6 days a week for 6 hours a day is going to be a lot better swimmer than he would be at 23 but only swimming a few times a week for a couple hours. They are both in their physical prime, but they aren't in the same physical condition to swim. The 22 year old is going to be the superior swimmer. All you have to do is look at how Mike moved in 86' compared to 90' and beyond. Even in his presser after the Spinks fight, he said he was considering retirement. I think we all knew that he wouldn't but that is a far cry from the mindset he had at the post-fight presser in 86' after he won the title. Mikes always been a fragile guy emotionally, and that just made it all the more likely for his personal life to derail which in turn affected everything else, most notably his fight career. The fighter that fought Berbick was nowhere near the same fighter that fought Douglass. Mikes hardest opponent has always been himself.

I’d say it was harder than it was great living his life as a fighter, he was the way he was because of how he grew & above all, his ability the way he was taught to think, made him unstoppable, no social media, just pure talent & dedication.
