Growing up in rural America in the 70's, I think we all had the pleasure of being around the types of people portrayed in this film. I never judged, but managed to survive by good luck and by distancing myself from the grifters. I am mixed on movies like this- cause like war stories, no matter how good, you just don't want to remember the past.

I grew up in the 80s but yeah it was still commonplace. Quasi-rural definitely not suburbs but with cities close, low income. Grifters carnies and actual rebels, not santized ones :D It was rough at times but it was colorful. I can't say I didn't judge but I didn't condemn and hung on both sides of the tracks. Can't say it didn't play a direct hand in building my tolerance. It's such a contrast to today, both good and bad.

I have come to realize that I enjoy RLM's reviews much more when they are reviewing a movie they like rather than something they hate. This is regardless of my opinion of what is being reviewed. It just seems like they put much more thought into their praise than they do their insults, which makes sense in one sense, but there is something to be said for a well thought out evisceration of a flick that deserves it.

I had never been able to put into words why I hate certain voice performances in games, movies, or anime, but that quote says it all for me. So many performances make me imagine a guy in a booth reading lines rather than a character in a world living their life. I'm gonna be thinking about that for a while now.

"shake the camera, make it look like a documentary!" People have no idea what a pet peeve that is to me. Those are words uttered only by filmmakers that have no clue about how documentaries are made. Documentaries are usually made by people who wants to look as professional and competent as possible. Shaking the camera around achieves none of those goals.

  • @jmalmsten

@@luichinplaystation610 Yup. Gorilla as opposed to Guerilla filmmaking, the naming coming from guerilla warfare where you sneak around where you're not supposed to be to wage war... or make movies... (It does make me wonder if that old proposed Apocalypse Now version that George Lucas wanted to make... in the field of the real life vietnam war... If that technically would count as guerilla filmmaking...) But yes. I accept that definition. Shaking cameras around to make it look like documentaries in ways that documentaries actively avoid as much as possible, should be defined as Gorilla Filmmaking. As in giving the camera to a gorilla who has no clue as to what he's holding in his hands.

Well I guess what they TRY to do is make it seem like the scene is so intense and unnerving that they can't even get a steady shot of what's going on, for example, gunfire in a firefight. But really they know it saves money because instead of setting off pyrotechnics or having elaborate setpieces they can focus on one person, film one explosion in the background and shake the camera to seem like so much more is going on. It's garbage filmmaking though. I can see using shaky cam once or twice in a movie, but many use it for every action sequence.

But you need a good writer and director who can make thecomdey work but make it work in a realistic setting. The way the scientists in "Dont look up" are portrait is serious and relatable while every one else is acting their "comedy" over the top. Its neither a good movie or smart satire. Also glad to hear others going in on some the stuff from the "film" that was "Don't Look Up", seemed to have been a real flavor of the month "DO YOU GET IT?" movie that I wasn't hearing too much from the other side for, the mention of what the director does on his social media seems to fit lol, a movie that seemingly seeks to be divisive via encouraging tired stereotype-like gags for no other reason than a want to appear as artistically provocative. Thanks for another video and keep up the good work Rich Evans and guest stars!
