    The Kid Detective is a great movie. It's worth mentioning that Evan Morgan not only directed it, but also wrote it.. The scenario is very neat and the dialogues clever. It's a Wes Anderson movie which get suddenly hit by reality.

    I'm glad I watched this. I watched the first 1/2 of the movie and was completely turned off by the low-key Wes Anderson-ness of it. This guy convinced me to turn it back on, and maaaaaaan did this pay off! Very solid film. Just stick with it. "Encyclopedia Brown Meets Some Evil Effer(s)"

    I watched this review back in February, and immediately downloaded the film. I finally got around to watching it tonight on the last day of July. I remembered Mike and Jay laughing about the end, so prepared myself. I guess my sense of humour and theirs don't jibe, because I seriously felt for the guy. He'd taken a lot of emotional hits for twenty years, and been fairly stoic about it all. I thought the end was touching, not funny. I do agree, though, that the movie was really good.

    The ending of this film reminds me of the ending of the movie Fresh (1994). In this movie the protagonist is playing detective throughout the movie, but the weight of the real life consequences of his detective work overwhelm him at the very end. In Fresh, throughout the movie the protagonist is playing a game of chess using the people in his life as the pieces in order to win, which results in real life tragic consequences. In the end of Fresh, the weight of the game he's been playing hit him with overwhelming emotion just like in the Kid Detective. Also in both endings the protagonist's are talking to their parents who are completely oblivious to the emotions their children are feeling.

I miss the days where they could show me a list of say dramas and I could look through the catalogue. Like you used to be able to do at the rental store. That's how I used to find those B movie gems, I didn't mind spending an hour at blockbuster finding a movie cause it was actually something I wanted to check out. Now if you don't watch it the first couple of weeks it comes out good luck finding it.

    I didnt take it that he was a bad detective. In fact, I think he was very competent but his downfall was his over confidence. I believe that is part of the arc, when he decides to hide under the bed rather than the closest. The character came to terms with his fallibility with the fundraiser mistake and he then questioned his assumptions about the hiding spots

  • @5Detective

    @5Detective

    2 жыл бұрын

    I mean, the murdered kid's father does literally say why he's a bad detective. "You just go with whatever everyone tells you." And this was demonstrated earlier in the film when the punk kids just make up stuff about the local candy seller, who Kid Detective has known his entire life, and he just believes it and pursues it. He's gullible. And this is also highlighted, in my opinion, by him bragging that he always solves mystery films by the second act... Which isn't impressive when so many mystery films go out of their way to help the viewer solve the crime if they pay attention, which is just them telling you the clues, and you put them together. Unlike real life, where there's a lot of lying and useless information. And he got that other kid in trouble for the fundraising money, because he put together the most obvious trail of breadcrumbs, and fell for the killer's bait. The killer was testing him to see how dumb he was.

    He's not a bad detective, he's a bad adult His problem isn't the detective work, but that he's still an immature boy in a man's body, because he's been stunted by the unattainable standards of his youth and was never forced to grow up. As the principal says "no child could ever survive that". Every failure he runs into is because of the immaturity of his plan, rather than the stupidity of it. Hiding in closets, under beds, etc.

    I had the same feeling. But I guess it depends on who you watch stuff with. I remember watching the original Night of the Living Dead and there's a scene where Barbra, suffering from shock, tells the story of how she ended up in the house while Ben is preparing himself to fight the ghouls. I found it pretty tragic. Many viewings later I went to a rep theatre and watched it with a full house. That same scene with Barbra in shock and Ben preparing himself, got a huge laugh. There's a part where Barbra raises her voice, and then it cuts to Ben loading a cartridge in the shotgun and closing the breach. Still don't get it, but they found it hilarious.

    This was one of the last movies I saw in theatre before the pandemic shut everything down. The guy two seats away had his shoes kicked off and was watching instagram videos on full volume. I have had lots of terrible movie-going experiences with ignorant patrons, but this was the first time I went to get a member of staff to kick someone out (and it took me about half the movie to gather up the courage). Instead of getting kicked out, he got told to put his shoes back on and spent the rest of the movie talking loudly to his friend and throwing skittles in my direction for ratting him out. Needless to say, my association with this movie is now rather marred. Glad to know it has the RLM seal of approval since I was so clouded by rage that I didn't know how to feel about the movie or the whole movie-going experience by the end of it.

    Firstly just want to call out that the room-mate party scene looked like it was lifted directly from the music video for The Shoes - Time To Dance which IMO is a masterclass in short film making, so much so that I had to double check that the director of that music video wasn't the same guy who made The Kid Detective, re-using concepts or ideas. Secondly I'm not sure I was necessarily struck by the humor of the end scene of The Kid Detective so much as I was struck with sense of sadness for the lead, empathy for a sad man who's weight of responsibility for solving the disappearance of a 20 year old missing child case finally being lifted off his shoulders and being left a ruined man as a result. The antagonist said it himself during the final confrontation; "I watched you grow up with the weight of the entire town on your conscience. I always felt a little sorry for you. No child could survive that". Great movie.

    @@gybe808 Hi i'll try to answer this as best as i can. I think think the RedLetter Team used the wrong term by saying it was the best "Payoff" they'd seen which assumes its going to be an obvious joke i.e the end of THEY LIVE where the couple are having sex and the Alien having his disguise removed and he's like "Hey what's wrong Baby!". The ending of THE KID DETECTIVE is a lot more subtle and won't necessarily be a funny moment to every one so it's open to interpretation. I think the reason that Mike and Jay found it funny is that our main character finally breaks down and has his moment right at the end of film where years of repressed emotions especially towards his parents takes place in what should be a very sad and intense moment, which is broken by cutting to Credits and the Nancy Sinatra Bubblegum Pop Song "Sugar Town" which negates his Emotional break down scene. So i guess the comedy of it is that he dosen't even get to have his "Moment".
