    I run custom settings based on the high end pre-set with lowered antistrophic filtering and some other stuff to stop my video card attempting to use more VRAM than it has. Which it will do if you let FS 2020 have its own way. A little example of how far I can see. Middle of the north sea off the coast of Norfolk (east of London) heading to France (Lille) I could see the French coastline from about 7000ft. Every other sim had a much lower draw distance. Stuff up close can still be a little bit fuzzy but I'm not running a 2080ti.

    @@craigdavies4682 I manage to get 50fps with custom setting running i7-6700k and GTX1080ti. Looks like CPU is bottleneck here since it's at 100% while GPU is around 60-70%. Thing is... While bush flight missions when I try to zoom my view and see airfields in distance, they are all blurry until I come really close. This makes it hard to spot them early on and prepare for nice landing.

    To the new simmers this is one of the more sober examples of tweaking the sim. Be warned if you get into the addiction of finding that Holy Grail of settings it will slowly drive you mad. Throwing the latest greatest hardware at it is a sign of addiction. Then there are the countless placebo tweaks people swear by only to find out it does nothing or simply turned a setting down. If you catch yourself digging in the registry files you know you are hooked.

    Thank you so much for the guide! Just doing the tweaks before starting the game made a huge improvement in performance. I was regularly getting 30 FPS that would drop off into the 20's and teens. Now I consistently getting 40+ FPS with the occasional drop into the 30s! I found manually setting the programs priority to High under the task manager to be a very important step to see these numbers.

    On my notebook I started with a preset that gives me at least 30 FPS. I then manually tweaked it so that I get at least 40 but a maximum of 45 FPS. In Riva Tuner Statistic Server I then set a FPS limit of 30. This reduces the GPU load on my notebook to around 60 - 70 %. In moments where the game needs more performance the GPU has enough headroom so that I still get a very stable 30. It also has the benefit that the heat output on my notebook is much lower. 30 FPS with very consistent frame times at 33.3 milliseconds can feel smoother than 60 FPS with massive frames spikes. I tested some of the recommendations in this video but none of them seem to have a significant impact on the game performance. Disabling AF gets me only 0 - 2 FPS but has a significant impact on the texture quality. Especially textures viewed from a low angle get significantly more blurry.

    I would advise people to test the "game mode" option. I get 10 extra fps with it ON. And changing the affinity in task manager does nothing for me. The best thing I did was the dpi settings on the exe file. It is worth the hassle of doing the permissions magic. A note on antialiasing and super sampling. Yes with 4k you won't get the jaggie effect but if you turn either of those on you will get better textures on runways and stuff. Its up to you if its worth the fps hit or not. Also if you are running 4K consider dropping the render scaling to 80. I did this and it basically looked the same but I got another 10 fps by doing it. Do NOT turn it above 100! For one there is no reason to do this, it shouldn't even be an option and two like you said it will kill your fps. For no real gain in quality. Depth of field doesn't work while flying. It only effects the drone camera and hanger. I have never seen ambient occlusion do anything either so I turn it off. I also disable traffic, it isn't that impressive to me. It didn't seem to effect FPS that much but it did effect how smoothly the sim ran. With it on I get more tiny micro stutters and pauses like it load terrain. And if you want to know what all the graphics settings do there is a very good walk through of it on the microsoft flight simulator forums. Some of the settings don't even do anything lol.

One thing for me is that the volumetric clouds do look better on the high setting and maybe only cost me a couple of FPS, so I keep them on high. My only issue with the game is that the more complex planes are the biggest FPS killer. I guess my processor is the weakest link there.

    That's a good methodology, helps with finding settings that work the best not just for individual people's hardware, but for their eyes. Personally I couldn't do without anisotropic filtering, it would bug me every time I look at the horizon. I also do use the render scaling option, but using values lesst than 100 to turn the resolution _down_ from 1440p. It helps a lot with a slower graphics card - in fact I wish they'd make that slider more granular, as it's 10 by 10, and would have to be set to 75% for rendering in 1080p on a 1440p screen.

    Any advice for locking your frames? Is it worth doing? This question is for OverKill, and the comments section. I appreciate everyone's advice. A really good video, with some superb advice. I also noticed the comments section is very healthy with good informative advice, and little to no poisonous remarks. Good on you flight sim community.

    I honestly haven't found a reason to yet. You can "cap" it with VSync and adjust it down to 30... however, I really would test it and see how it works for you. For myself I always keep Vsync off unless I'm pushing MORE than 60hz consistently and developing screen tearing.

    @@OverkillSimulations I have a G-Sync monitor so V-Sync is off natively. I did lock my frames from within Nvidia control panel to 60 and was getting roughly 45fps. I have a 1080p Ultrawide Asus Predator Monitor which has 144Hz refresh rate, so I would have had to lock the frames at 72fps, which sort of defeats the object. So I unlocked the frames. I didn't notice any discernible difference. I was intrigued by the second monitor, and ShadowPlay though. I think I have been dealing with that exact issue lol.

    You can also lower your render scaling down to 80%, it can significantly boost your framerate. At 80% the difference in the image quality is barely noticable, but below that the render may become too blurry.

    i had no stutters on ultra, and flew very well over Manchester UK, so i put on the fps as you out lined in the video i was barely gettin 20fps. Vsync was the main issue and i run on 1080p monitor. Ryzen 7 2700x geforce 1080ti 11gigs ram, Ram 32 gigs ddr 4 3000mhz, SSD drive. When i turned vsync off it nearly double my fps - i was so shocked at that change. MS flight sim xx put everything on ultra when i fist installed - the game based it on my system et al. No matter what graphic settings i use other than vsync, has no affect on frame rates. Most important close down apps running in the background, it can kill your frame rate. Wow phoneix, the area around its magnificent, just lovely fields, oh my the mountains. I flew out from the above airport and got 36-7fps on ultra.

    Yeah I totally agree with what the video stated, FPS don't matter so much on this game, but it's the stuttering that's the killer. I'm on an ultrawide, and so don't want to lower to 1080p like you mentioned. I don't need 60fps, but if I drop below 50fps, I have to disable Freesync on my monitor, or else it gets bad flickering. I think it's to do with voltage in the monitors Freesync hardware module. I tried it Jays2Cents video, which helped improve fps a little, but didn't help with stuttering. Will definitely try the tips in your video when I can.

    I'm using an i7 2600 (3.4GHz) in a 2012 Dell XPS 8300 with 14GB and a 4GB GTX 980, Win10 and MSFS on SSDs - my FPS does not vary whether I have volumetric clouds on Low or Ultra and I have flown everything from light morning mist thru to thick storm clouds. I have most my settings at Medium with a couple of them on High and I can maintain a smooth non-stuttering experience at around 30FPS with TracKIR. Hence, while your setup looks as smooth as butter I am surprised to see you have so many settings turned Off. I have both LODs at 100% as you do, but you do realise that Buildings, Trees and Grass do NOT alter the AMOUNT of each category but its quality/complexity. And obviously I am using the exact same setups and conditions for any testing.

    @Christian Alvarado I have a 3090 and it still runs terrible. Its good I have Game pass because I wouldn't pay $180AUD for the full Game I can tell you that much. I considered a full yoke setup but I'm not spending $1000AUD to play a terribly optimised Sim.

  • @dunxy

    @dunxy

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sure its not ideal as far as optimisation goes, its rare to find such a beast in any form of sim/game these days. It does like CPU a lot, so even having a top shelf GPU (like a 3090)is not enough by itself. The differences between medium and ultra in nearly all case are extremely minimal in terms of visual quality but create huge performance hits, tweaking is essential. Higher cpu clocks are also essential, more important than sheer number of cores and remember not all cpu's are created equal, older chips with weaker IPC will not perform the same as modern chips at the same clock. Things like the windows and nvidia power settings are one of the most important things, not changing these not only impacts performance but at least in my case, will even cause ctd. Aim for 5ghz ish on a modern cpu (like no older than last gen) to even think about not bottlenecking a top tier card like a 3080ti or 3090. Having at least 32gb of decent ram is also pretty important, 16gb is simply not enough. Lots of people think simply throwing a top tier gpu in a system that was only say medium spec a few years ago is enough, for some use cases it will not make much difference but not so in the case of this sim. Performance with an older 1080 is very good if its in a current high end system, but in an older system, especially one lacking ram, performance suffers greatly, especially micro stutters.

    If DOF does anything like it is supposed to in a photographic sense.. then you will not see the effect at all if you have a wide angle lens and far off objects in focus with nothing in close. If you want to see depth of field in action you need to focus on something close up and see something in the distance go out of focus. Conversely you can focus on something in the distance and see something in close go out of focus. Depth of field says how much is in focus. And in general. you can say that at the point of focus you have an area that is one third close in focus and two thirds away from it in focus. That area, the full three third is the depth of field. And with a wide lens, lots of light and a tiny aperture. It's basically infinite and you won't see any blur no matter how high quality it is. But if you go to drone view, zoom in and get some foreground objects and even play around with the showcase camera settings. You can get it easily to a point where nothing is in focus.

  • @dunxy

    @dunxy

    2 жыл бұрын

    DOF is apparently for external drone views only, so is totally for photogenic purpose and has nothing to do with anything else. I don't use external views so cant confirm but that is the word on the street.

    @OverKill Texture Supersampling Off makes the runway look like I have 20/400 vision (and I used to before LASIK, so I know what it looks like) and am not wearing my glasses. Probably other places, too, but I was paying attention to the runway. At best, at least at the 1440p that I'm running, it costs 1-2fps, and that's being kind, I really don't think there was any real frame difference at all. It's hard to say with certainty because I don't have the HW for it in the first place to do any real testing, but I'm not sure my eyes would notice the diff between 1440p and 2160p (4K). I know I can tell the difference between 1440p and 1080p because I've accidentally run the sim at 1080p before. I'm running an i5-10600K, RTX2070 Super, my monitor is 32" and I watch from 2'-3' away. Volumetric clouds are essential to a realistic IFR experience, and again I don't really notice any measurable difference, especially when I'm in them, but even on the ground with overcast and rain it's only 3-4fps different. I get ~43fps+ on the ground in a complicated airport environment (172 with steam guages), 70-90 elsewhere. I was getting 115+ the other day inside the Grand Canyon. Using MSI afterburner for fps counter, I get the same "bug" if I have, say, an in focus ATC window open on my 2nd monitor (which is all by itself probably costing me frames, I think I'm going to play around with running it off of onboard graphics, especially since I can't get the CPU to run above about 65%, so I've got the headroom to do it), but as soon as I close it and go back to the sim, the measurement reverts back to the actual sim display, which matches the developer mode counter exactly, except it doesn't do tenths. Of course, who cares about tenths.

    You guys literally just buy a pc the day before making these comments? HT=hyperthreading. As for the stuttering mr op, id say your cpu is probably the limiting factor of your setup. When this came out i was still running an old sandy bridge xeon on socket 2011(highly overclocked with water cooling and 32gb of fast ddr3 in quad channel) with a gtx1080, when 1080 came out my numbers were within a few % of say your cpu so was little cause to upgrade then. This game though ran pretty bad, being well due for motherboard, cpu and ram upgrade i went for a ryzen 5900x with 32gb ddr4 and the stuttering was completely gone, since upgraded my gpu as well but honestly even with the rather dated old 1080 the performance change was dramatic, this game needs cpu and it craves high clocked cores over threads, so if your running stock clocks you may want to overclock, chances are you are overclocked because you have a k sku and no reason to buy a k if not cranking that multiplier for essentially free performance!

    Hi, I think something else is going on in the game and Microsoft are limiting or locking frames. As you notice the frames stay similar flying over the see as on land, looking or flying in any direction. So, start a flight up anywhere in the world and have the Msfs2020 FPS tool running. Then go back into your Msfs2020 game settings and go the data options and play with the TOP data on and off option and look at you FPS counter it shoot up as the change is being applied and then goes back to the same frame rate as before and turn it back on. The same thing with FPS happens again....until thecchanges have been applied and similar frame count again. I think the game engine is throttling FPS, may be because the game has to load parts of the game over the internet and not so much a GPU problem itself..... give it ago yourself.....

    Huh? you want your gpu maxed... Not doing so means you're bottlenecking it and wasting potential performance. This game will ctd for simple things like power settings in both windows and nvidia CP, if you already have those maxed and your 2080 is still crashing id say its unstable, id be stress testing it with a 4k+ torture test for 1-1.5hrs to ensure its stable. Dont just assume it is, even brand new cards can be unstable out of the box, i just returned a 3080 the other week because it was unstable brand new. It would play a lot of games no problem, even run benchmarks like timespy extreme no worries, but try running time spy extreme torture test it would crash after around 50-60 passes. People always assume games are unstable without testing their hardware using known stable benchmarking/stress testing software. You may simply only need to drop your clock a few % to ensure its stable and be able to make use of it at its full capacity.

    Oh, I also commend you on telling people to not just copy someones settings or blindly take their advice on what works and doesn't. You really do have to try these tweaks one by one and test them on your system. It is time consuming but worth it in the end. And if you go to the microsoft flight simulator forums there is also a post on fixing fps while in the cockpit of certain planes. It is some files you can download and place in your community folder that limits the refresh rate of the gauges. In some of the planes, like the 747 I went from 30 ish fps in the cockpit to 50 some fps. A lot of the tweaks and fancy tricks people are posting didn't seem to have much effect or made things worse on my 3900x/2070 super system. So again, like he said test them on YOUR system. Don't just randomly change a ton of stuff all at once and expect a miracle. One setting might improve things and another might make it worse. Then they cancel each other out and it seems like it made no difference.
