It should be noted these settings are for casual flight simmers who often fly in third-person and expect 60fps, and more. These settings are going to become obsolete very fast once study-level addons from PDMG and others are released that eat up even more CPU cycles due to the complex aircraft (commercial airliners) systems they simulate. Flight Sims are not like other games and are simulating (hence, the name) a lot more than what is being rendered on screen. So, they'll always feel like they need to be "optimized", but not in the ways normal games are due to less things being run at once that makes flight sim CPU and GHz bound vs. standard games.

@@PLAYER_42069 Good point. Still, I thank the youtuber for its time figuring out some nice balance between performance and fidelity, because my I7 4790 + RX580 struggles to hit 20-30 fps with this gane at 1080p in areas like Tokyo and New York.

The game needs a dx12 update. It's severely bottlenecked by the cpu (mainthread). Surprised it wasn't released with it from the beginning.

You're right. It's Microsoft's sim after all! They did say they were gonna optimize for XSX and patch that into the PC version. So expect a DX12 Ultimate patch :)

I cannot imagine one single person who watches Digital Foundry jumping on a 2080ti build today.

Can we talk about how well the TAA handled the image at 540p? That looks much, much, much cleaner than 540p. Soft, sure, but there is very little aliasing or artifacting. Remarkable image quality considering the pixel count.

Remember the many different Anthem vids? All commercials. Here "passionate" = paid. They mix it with enough non-sponsored content to make it seem like its all their "passion." Easy to tell what's real, like with John's Retro series. Only a few real guys out there exist in this company catering ocean of hidden ads.

@@eduardosantiago6948 the thing about CRT cant be done with a LCD is that you will be able to crank up every graphic option to maximum and archive an insanely high refresh rate with a little sacrifice to overal resolution ( which does not matter much to a CRT anyway). Once you see that with your own eyes, you will want to burn your LCD-flatscreen on a stake

Obvious bias? Bro, he removed the GPU bottleneck and the two processors showed where their limits are for this game. I have a feeling Im misunderstanding what you mean...

What I really appreciate with Digital Foundry is how passionate they are about gaming and settings. I used to BUG out on settings and I basically bought games to tweak settings and never really got to the game. I'm that kind of person. I try for perfection anything less felt like the game was broke to me. Now I have DF as a guide line to some of the best games out there. I can play the game now. Ty.

@Ricardo Jaye I have over 100 hours now. Running it on a Ryzen 5 2600x 16GB DDR4 RX500XTt with custom settings based on 1440p 'high end' pre-set. However I can see the French coastline from the Norfolk coast out in the North see about 60-70 miles on a clear day. Don't expect to run it at ultra. Contrary to common belief you don't need 60fps to have a smooth experience. You want to aim for as smooth as possible while maintaining as much visual quality as is possible.

12:34 is the optimized settings for this game.

Thank you Alex! Thanks to your video I managed to squeeze out even more out of my 2080 ti eGPU without performance loss. Keep up the brilliant work.

3 months on and these optimised settings still work great, so much so I use then in my 2080Ti to drive my HP Reverb G2 and it looks so amazing it gives me goosebumps at times!

As previous Microsoft Flight Simulator (FSX) tought us, it is a great idea to cap FPS at a level where the game can consistently achieve it, where it was even recommended cap at 30FPS on top of the line overclocked i7 (if you had many addons). With MSFS 2020 that probably is only necessary on lower core count CPUs. Unfortunately the built in Frame Limiter suffers from terrible frame pacing, but Riva Tuner does a great job.

@@mint88rx8 They both work, but the Riva Tuner one gives me slightly better frame times. But according to tests done by BattleNonsense, the RTSS limiter add one frame of delay, so the choice is up to you. Ultimately I don't feel any difference.

@@mint88rx8 Forever using that because I never use Vsync/Adaptive Sync/Fast Sync/GSync. Also Rivatuner gives me awfully uneven frametimes. So I prefer the Control Panel one

Optimizing the FPS in a flight sim from an external view might not be the best approach. FPS will take a hit when you are actually in the cockpit and considering the unoptimized avionics code that was recently discovered by the community.

Because it's so close to next-gen hardware hitting the shelves, it is a weird time to try and sell a 2080ti at full price. Many times I really don't understand these types of sales... I mean, whos's going to fall for it unless they absolutely need this system for tomorrow!

Huge tip for every one : activate the Nvidia sharpness filter (or AMD equivalent), it does wonder to the game and the high frequency ground detail.

I recently upgraded my PC at work that runs optical Simulations. I also got an i9 with 14 cores/28 threads and when I run the Sim I have 100% CPU utilization on all 28 threads, which is a sight to behold.

runs fine now with my ryzen 2700 and 5700xt

I get 60-70fps on "high-end" 1080p with a GTX 1080. Just undock the VFR map and you gain fps substantially.

Thanks to DF that video helped so much getting a good FPS on 4K with high to ultra settings. Was experementing a lot the past 2 weeks but never got above 35fps now averaging 45fps with much better graphics! Thanks so much to DF for testing things out for us! Now waiting for full DX12 support and maybe DLSS. Nochmals danke Alex!

It makes sense that the game is cpu limited, because its all about physics. It is not all about how it looks, but how it operates behind the scenes. That is why lowering the video quality of clouds does not make much of an effect. The complicated phyics behind it still works the same.

You're right about why it's heavy for CPU, but lowering the quality of clouds actually makes a huge effect in framerate, and it's all about graphics in this case. MSFS pushes hardware to their limits: RAM, storage, CPU, GPU and even internet bandwidth. No survivors.

Can we take a.moment to appreciate that the recording device in the PC was painted like a black box?

Running it with my custom water cooled 5900x and RX 6800 with a MSI X570 Unify mb 32 gig ddr4-3600 ram and Sabrent NvME4 1 tb. Using a wall mounted BenQ 3501R 35" ultra wide. Beautiful graphics. I also have a 3900x/Radeion VII rig, 9900k/2080TI and an Intel 5960x/1080TI. I found the BEST bang for the buck in MSFS2020 is to increase Ram to 32gigs. Thank you for your video and recommendations.

Windshield Effects set to ULTRA is well worth using to get the lovely cockpit reflections.

This video was great, up until the Origin PC plug.

This video is more like an advertisement rather than sponsored... although they are essentially the same thing....

Finally, DF video actually at 4K.

Well done!!!!! Been waiting for this and was not at all disappointed. EDIT: Upon further thought...the fact that there was no mention of geo-caching, network bandwidth, storage performance, live data etc. made the review seem rather incomplete.

Nice Ad. Here, have some real quality of life suggestions for people with more mainstream hardware: Alex´ settings but: Resolution @1080p with 100%-120% scaling, depending on the landscape Texture Supersampling on 6x6 (massive improvement right here) or even 4x4 8x Anisotropic Reflections Ultra Textures Ultra Terrain Detail 125 Lock to 30 fps via your driver for some quiet and stable performance. Disable ingame vsync or fps limitation. Tested ingame with 30+ hours on a Vega 56 and a FX8350 (!).

I flew over my house, mission accomplished. Completed it mate....

Been waiting for this one!

Here's my issue with this game. Core i7 6700, RTX 2060, 32GB of RAM. Game keeps showing "Limited by MainThread" when I toggle on the FPS counter in Developer mode. I cannot get over 30fps no matter which settings I change on 1080p, and the game doesn't seem to be utilizing my hardware in task manager (CPU/GPU). After searching Google, I found a Reddit post talking about the same "Limited by MainThread" issue, with people having pretty beefy systems and the game not utilizing their hardware and getting low FPS. This game seems to have a serious CPU bottlenecking problem where the game refuses to utilize your hardware if you have an older CPU. Don't know why no one else is talking about this.

Drop trees and objects distance below 100. I can run the game on high 30 fps locked with those sliders set to 50 with an I7 4790k, 16GB of RAM (DDR3 1600mhz is probably hurting performance quite badly), and a gtx 1060. You should be able to do a better than me, maybe 75?

@@Max15691 Turn on Dev mode, the issue is Limited by MainFrame. For you it probably says Limited by GPU, which is normal. Changing settings will barely do anything.

@@fantherailsbc Yes, I used dev mode and when I had horrible framedrops (15-20 fps for like 20 seconds to a minute) it said limited by mainthread/cpu. Dropping those sliders reduced the cpu usage while loading terrain/buildings and now I have constant 30 fps, wich is fine for me, my pc can't do anymore than 30 anyway. That's why I told you to drop those sliders, at least a little, it might help.

After watching 14 videos on how to improve, your video did the trick. With exception of jets, I7 6700 RTX 2080.

I don't mind that you have a sponsored video, but it's a bit overbearing to be honest, I can't really watch the video to the end as the last part is basically an ad for the system. From what I'm hearing though, if I clock my i7-8086K CPU to 5 GHz it should be fine.

I think 30fps is perfectly fine for a game of this nature, at least i'd have no problems with that in this case.

Using a 4790k at 4.8ghz and a rtx 2070 I saw a huge uplift using these optimized settings. Even at 4k with the resolution scaled at 80% I was seeing decent performance above 30 fps

Running a Ryzen 7 3700X with an RTX 2060 KO Ultra with 32 gigs of ram, yet running this at 20 FPS max... These presets really helped. Boosted me to nearly 60 at some points

I thought the Origin PC was cool, especially the flight (video) recorder! What's the big deal about sponsered content. It's like commercials during the superbowl just ignore them. At the end of the day its a revenue stream which allows DF to make these great videos which I'll all for!

Nobody flies GA in NYC. I fly in Florida and performance is fine on my 1070TI powered two year old Asus laptop. The sim works great on normal hardware in normal environments.

Great video with the how and why and what to do! I'm looking forward to your re-test with the i9 10900K and new NVIDIA RTX 3080. I'd like to see the data for comparison.

2:27 540p is not half of 1080p, it's a quarter.

@@CarsonCote you need 4 tiles of 540p to fill a 1080p screen bruh. A 2×2 square fits 4 1×1 tiles. Length scales directly proportional, areas scale quadratically, volumes scale cubically.

@Carson Cool He's talking about resolution, not the number. "540p"/960x540 is a quarter of the pixels of "1080p"/1920x1080, not half.

I got 10 gen i7 with a rtx 2060 and used these settings at 1440p and ran great cant complain.

its crazy how the addition of DLSS gave me a boost of 20 fps. I've been playing MS flight simulators since the 80s and only now have I been able to play one at ultra settings with nice frame rates.

RIP the highest end parts setup !

@ everyone has them, so everyone cares. testing with the new geforces is what would be pointless since no one has it yet, and even when they're out, not everyone will be able to have them since they are only released expensive high end parts this year (yeah $500 is super high end, don't let the 70 denomination fool you)

I started the game with a Phenom X4 9550, 8go of ram and a R9 280. 1080p low, I've got a solid 10-15fps...in a small town. Didn't try in a big city.

I would love to see a revisit to this when the time is right to see the engine performance changes that have been implemented.

This simulator to be *PERFECT* need DLSS 2.1 and VR compatibility + Foveated Rendering.

LOL ... I started reading the comments and saw people complaining about DF shilling for Origin and didn’t know what they were talking about. Then I got 6min in ... “... and that’s why this PC customized by Origin is so great and better than Ryzen ...” LOL and WTF. Come on DF. Times are tough for all of us. You guys are great and you do a great job usually. But you are better than this. If you need to monetize your content - you need to be more transparent and thoughtful about it. I don’t think anyone here will begrudge making some coin off your content - but just ... you know do it better and way more clearly next time. Do This DF: Origin sent us a beefy PC and gave us xyz to make a flight sim vid - and here are the results exactly as they appear in our tests. US: OK. NOT DF: (wearing a brand new gold rolex) Hi guys, just found this PC on the sidewalk, no idea if it’s any good. (tosses hair casually). Just gonna run flight sim on it and then trash ryzen. Sehajdeep Singh The whole point is that the structure / integrity of this video is under question and they can say whatever they want but once they start the infomercial segment I begin questioning everything I hear. It’s not a secret to anyone that Intel generally has better single threaded performance. In this case, it seems bizarre to hype up this build when Zen 3 is about to come out AND the 3000 series cards are about to come out ... I mean this build is literally an overpriced, underperforming dinosaur. Additionally, it seems like it is probably poorly optimized and would benefit from multi core/threaded improvement which diminish intel’s advantage. In short - I would guess that most of us came to this video 1) simply to understand how to most efficiently run the game better / what settings had the least impact on visuals but still made it run well, and 2) just cuz we were interested in the game. I personally didn’t click on the video for some BS advertisement for an outdated PC build.

Err, I guess we’ll need to wait for a follow up video that explains all the various settings and what they do? Waiting 2 weeks for what amounts to “set to high” and an infomercial isn’t really in the spirit of these DF performance videos, right? Results are results but it’s the journey and understanding of the engine that makes these videos fun.

Why are you talking about the PC as if it has special hardware you can only get from the manufacture that paid you to advertise it? If you built the computer yourself with the same hardware you would get the same performance.

Would like to know more about effects of gpu driver settings and their impact on performance, like setting vsync in the driver instead of in the game, or changing nvidia ultra low latency settings to see if it effects CPU performance.

Nive video. Although, for you guys with lower end PCs, I am running FS on a x3470 with a gpx1650, res 1600x900 everything on HIGH and I get about between 31 and 42 fps. I am a real pilot and flight simulator enthusiast since 1997 (started with FS 5.0) and I think 31fps is already good enough. I will get some stutters on very dense cities but in the end it is a very immersive, fluid and beautiful experience.

I appreciate the work and info presented here. However, as it was with FSX, I think there's too much of an emphasis on pure fps numbers vs. how smooth the sim actually runs and appears. For example, on FSX 24 - 30 fps was very playable and smooth. Trying to maximize the fps ended up sacrificing overall smooth game play for many. On computers of the time, trying to get 60 fps out of it resulted in more frequent and perceptible stutters/pauses. Locking the frame rate down to 30 fps (or even as low as 24 fps) ended up with a smoother overall experience. Try turning off the frame rate counter on FS2020 and enjoy it for what it is, rather than trying to eek out the highest frame rate possible. PS: After I buy a new system that can actually handle FS2020, I'd be happy to get a consistent 30fps. I don't need 60fps to enjoy a realistic experience.

David Giles i already do consistent 30fps at 4k ultra settings with my 3 years old config. So it should not be difficult to do that with any of the current components. Ryzen 1800x asus x370 32GB ddr4 3200, samsung 960 pro m2 3GB/sec. 1080ti 11GBgddr5x blower edition. My cpu is doing it dinger in the noise at 26-36% max , but the gpu is used at 100%. All the 11GB are nearly used as well 9-10/11GB. I get consistent 30fps everywhere, big cities included like new york and los angeles.

Fantastic video again and one I was waiting for. I was expecting you to perhaps mention DLSS a bit seems you did talk about DirectX 12 briefly, as if there was ever a single game out there that would benefit most from any sort of DLSS implementation, Flight Sim 2020 is it. I would say DLSS is perhaps far more important then say, having RayTracing support, especially for when they add VR Support. Thanks again for the informative video. PS. I personally had no problem with the Origin advertizement. I did however felt it strange to do that now, when nvidias new 3000 series cards launch next week? but I had absolutely no issue with you having a sponsor like that.
