Michael Penix Jr. - Episode #1 | Kurt Warner Breaks Down the Game Tape | College Series '24

Спорт

Back here on my college football StudyBall series, as we continue to inch closer to the draft. We're gonna take a look at our fourth quarterback this week, and it's Michael Penix Jr. The last couple years at Washington he's been as good as anybody in college football. He's got a lot of really, really good tape. He was better at the beginning of this year than at the end of this year, although really, really good the semi-final. Against Texas let his team all the way to the national championship game. And then I saw some play or some throw at the combine, and I thought he was most impressive thrower of the guys threw with the combine ball came out with great pace, look very, very comfortable with the different drops. I'm really excited to see how he translates into the national football league, but let's dive into this first tape which is the first game of the season against Oregon. #michaelpenixjr #nfldraft2024 #nfl

    I'll admit i'm a homer, buuuutttt in the championship game the defense for Michigan was allowed to grab Washington receiver 10 yards down the field the entire game. In the first half the announcers even started mildly complaining about this and they are supposed to be neutral. Different game if we don't have those SEC officials that "let them play?" by allowing defensive holding on receivers well beyond the line of scrimmage.

    I believe the 2nd to last play was to odunze. Penix said threw a lot of “50/50”balls to odunze because he believed odunze would win more than 50 percent. He didnt do that with polk or mcmillan and considering odunze is likely a top 10 pick i guess thats a good decision lol.

    It isn't just tossing it in the air and Odunze coming up with it. a l ot of it is Penix ball placement. Honestly swap washington and Texas pass catching groups and we may view them differently. Odunze very well could have disappeared in certain schemes with any other qb... on film he isn't wide open.. he was overly dependent on Penix providing him a catchable ball away from the defender.... wr like that disappear when they are with qb's without that type of ball placement.

    I'm sold on this dude, not quite sure why he's ranked in the media as low as he is. I think he's got everything you need to be a dropback passer in the NFL. His deep and medium accuracy is best in class in my opinion. Not perfect, and if he's supposed to be the savior of a terrible franchise that could be rough, but this kid can play.

    The ACL injuries to both knees, but he's managed to get over that ..and improved once he got to Washington. As you saw in the National Title Game, he was never really comfortable as Michigan dialled up blitz after blitz and got to him. He can play - but he's a comp with Kirk Cousins - a stat machine, with an odd release point - but Phillip Rivers had that shot put delivery (although he was right handed) .

    Clearer now that Penix could run an NFL offense from day one, if he's got decent talent around him. Ideal destinations would start with Miami. He could run the same offense as Tua, but with more attacking downfield. He does require at least an average pass-blocking line.

    @williamsampson44606 күн бұрын

    In my opinion A lot of people do not see that everything that could go wrong for Penix went wrong against Michigan and his only really bad play was the interception to start the second half. The Starting running back was injured, the O-line and receivers all had horrible days, and the Michigan secondary was allowed to blatantly hold and interfere all game long. If you remove the throw to start the second half all of his other misses involve a bad route by the receiver or a Michigan defender pulling with a fist full of jersey not allowing the receiver to make it to the correct spot. How can people watch the tape and say Penix lacks anticipation, reading the defense, or throwing receivers open. The stat about Penix having a low rating against pressure is missing the forest for the trees. He throws the ball away instead of scrambling around playing playground hero ball that works in college but does not work in the NFL consistently. He also passes the ball so quickly that pressure does not get to him as often but when he faces pressure it is usually a defender in the backfield right after the snap when a QB has almost no chance to create a positive play. He drops the ball in the bucket time and time against while placing the ball in a tiny window to a well covered receiver. He manipulates the safeties and launches the ball accurately. The ball flies out of his in ways that you do not see from any of the other QB's in this draft. The Other QB's in this draft are one read and scramble right now. The Other QB's in the draft could not even hit receivers on out routes and corner routes with no defense at their pro days. Pro days are not very revealing about long term success or failure but some of the misses were ugly from other 1st round QB's.

    His feet are are hardly ever going to be perfect during pressure. I think Kurt’s one criticism is actually a compliment. He can put juice on balls that he has to get rid of. The other guys you don’t even see them hang in on throws. They tuck and run after the first read against high school defenders and everyone thinks they’re going to do that in the NFL. Penix and Danials are the only two guys in this draft that can win from the pocket. The other guys look like Pounder 2.0. With Penix it’s about designing the team around him. Right Tackle has to be right and the defense has to handle the pressure of more clock. Raiders would be a good fit and he could sit year one AOC and him have a lot of common traits.
