MG HS hybrid 2023 review: +EV Essence | Mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV long-term tested over 3 months

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

At around $53,000 driveaway, the MG HS+EV is a pricey MG, but a relatively affordable midsize plug-in hybrid SUV. Andrew Chesterton has family tested it over three months to see how its petrol-electric tech measures up in terms of economy and day-to-day ease-of-use.
Each month he took a different approach to mimic likely customer habits. Charge the car once, then run it for the rest of the month like a regular petrol-powered SUV. Next month, let the car’s brain optimise the mix of petrol and electric power. Then, play it 100 per cent by the book, charging the battery every night to minimise combustion and maximise EV efficiency. Which approach worked best?
Over time, Chesto found plenty to like and some things he wasn’t completely convinced by. Is it right for your family? Press play for a run-down on the highs, lows and flat-out surprises from his time with this five-seat, electrified market favourite.

I had narrowed down my choice of hybrid vehicles to two, this full spec MG and the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV..It very quickly became the Eclipse Cross, as the centre screen on the MG continually shut down, or just failed to work, especially when reversing, as the rear camera view failed. The salesman said it's a simple software fix, but I was too concerned over long term reliability. This was last year, so it's a shame that the MG is still affected by this glitch.

I seem to remember reading in a US review that the MG PHEV does not start on electric mode until the ICE has warmed up.

I've had a MG HS phev for 12 months, and it has 30k on the clock already. I use it to travel between multiple work sites and travel about 100km+ per day. Average consumption is 5.8 - 6.2 litres per 100km, which i think is pretty good. It's saving me 400 dollars per month in fuel costs compared to the x trail in replaced.

do you ever use the EV-only mode, or just leave it in the automatic "do what it thinks is best" mode?

@Mububban23 I use it all the time around town, but rarely on the highway. I could probably get the figure down lower by using it more.

I'm in the UK. I bought a new HS Exclusive (petrol) Auto 3 months ago and so far have been very pleased with the car. Be careful with the warranty - all reviews mention it's 7 years but fail to mention the long list of exclusions and the many parts covered for 12 or 36 months only.

@Mububban23 If a vehicle is under 10 years old with less than 200k on the clock, they still have to fix it regardless of it being out of warranty. It's probably why Mitsubishi have the 10 year/200k warranty here in Australia.

MG should've made an MG Icon the concept shooting brake-like coupe with 4WD based on MGB GT; it came with turbocharged 1.5 four cylinder runs on e10 unleaded, six speed and four sport disc brakes with Electronic Stability Control.

I have driven a number of new MG vehicles for a couple weeks at a time and was really disappointed. The suspension and handling was so bad as to be unsafe. The petrol was a gas guzzling pig with lousy performance. The hybrid was even worse considering the huge price premium and found the fuel consumption no better than a turbo petrol.

I test drive this and a Mazda CX60 and the MG was better. Terrible gearbox in the Mazda. I had the MG for two hours - country roads, freeway and town driving. No issues. However, I come from an Isuzu MUX diesel so I think that's a low bar 😂

Not for sale in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Switzerland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania. These are currently the European countries where MG doesn’t sell vehicles at the moment so they don’t get the HS in those areas.

Hired one two days ago. Windscreen badly obscured by the mirror and sensor and in 210 miles I got 38mpg, dismal compared with my diesel Passat at 62mpg. It was okay around town but unhappy on the motorway. Chinese rubbish rebranded, horribly over-complex and ridiculously heavy.

is that seriously the only thing you took from that segment? Where he mentioned 6.9L in "auto" hybrid mode, or 1L/100km in EV-only mode? If I had a PHEV it'd be 95% of the time in EV-only mode, and use the ICE for the annual road trip holiday.

They specifically say in the test that's when the tester did *not* plug it in to recharge, i.e. running it as pure ICE. When plugged in and run in EV mode as standard, consumption was under 2.0 l/100km in real-world daily driving conditions.

  • @waterunderthefridge6058

    @waterunderthefridge6058

That high figure is for when the ICE is both driving the car AND charging the batteries. This should always be avoided because it makes no sense when you can just pluggin and charge, it's way cheaper and more efficient. The point of this being mentioned in the review is to explain that the real efficiency of PHEVs come from selecting EV mode as much as possible for city and suburban driving and plugging in to recharge , ie, not recharging using the ICE as it makes no sense. Save ICE for the open road and long trips.
