Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vs MG HS PHEV comparison review: Plug-in or plug-free? Which SUV is best?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this Carsguide comparison test we’re weighing up whether you should go for a regular hybrid or a plug-in hybrid - and to do so, we’ve got the nation’s most popular SUV, the Toyota RAV4, up against a newcomer - the MG HS PHEV.
The Chinese-made MG HS Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) is arguably more technologically advanced than our reigning Car of the Year, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid - but is it the one you should buy?
In this test the Toyota RAV4 we have is the Cruiser hybrid all-wheel drive, which has not only impressed us, but is arguably the most in demand family car in Australia with long wait times and a lot of driveway cred.
Up against it in this test is the all-new MG HS PHEV, which pushes the hybrid petrol-electric envelope even further than its rival. It has good looks, a technologically advanced powertrain and a pretty clever interior, too.
Both of these SUVs combine petrol and electric driving, and both are priced almost identically to each other. And with no plug-in RAV4 Prime available here, we had to figure out whether you go plug-free with an older favourite, or is the best choice to plug-in to a newcomer?

I have been using MG HS PHEV for two years and I have some experience with it myself. 1. I drive in EV mode when I commute to and from get off work. When the road is very congested, I can run 60-70 kilometers on a full charge. As a result, the tank of gasoline I added was not used up after half a year, and I was even worried that the gasoline would go bad. 2. The riding experience of MG HS PHEV is much better than the CX-5 I used before, quieter and more comfortable. 3. The assisted driving of MG HS PHEV is very useful on congested roads, allowing me to deal with congested roads very easily. 4. The automatic braking system is of great help to me. At least I have avoided two rear-end collisions. It is strongly recommended that all vehicles use the automatic braking system. 5. My MG HS PHEV is charged at home with a common power socket. It takes about 7 hours to fully charge from 0% to 100%. I use a timer to let the vehicle charge at night when the electricity bill is the cheapest, which leads to a total of 50 kilometers for my commute to and from work. The energy usage cost of the journey is only $2.5 Australian dollars, which is already the price after the electricity price has been increased many times.

It seems the reviewer had already made up his mind that it is too difficult to plug in and charge the car, therefore not a fair review by any way. The interior of MG is way better than toyota here with the digital instrument cluster and the seats and overall ambience with the ambient lighting too, but he gave toyota more points for a little extra storage! In terms of powertrain, yes MG has a little body roll, but families in this segment are looking for comfortable ride, not which car is best for high speed corners. The overall interiors with huge sunroof and comfortable and modern interiors with a powerful 10 speed engine and an excellent ev mode which could give you 63 kms of ev only driving for the city gives MG HS Phev a win for me!

The same people that criticised MG were also the same that criticised KIA and Hyundai. Now their favourite "best" car ever has been relegated to the footnote of motoring history. Give it time and MG will improve, if not they'll be done considering how competitive the car industry is.

Hi had MG for about a month and must say impressed with drivability and quality of build. Agree with suspension comments. MG does have cyclist detection. The car is a company car lease vehicle and as I do around 35000 miles a year will let you know how well it lasts. On the subject of fuel/ battery consumption. I have found it will usually do at least the 32 mile claimed range, and sometimes upto 40miles in town driving. Toyota is also a great car but for me the emissions were too high to make it viable as company car tax is co2 related and MG won hands-down. So after a month would I have spent my own money on it. Yes

Had it a year now and overall very good still, you have to work to get the best out of it but have achieved 88mpg over a 72mile journey using all the battery range. Not too economical in winter as you can't pre condition it while plugged in so the engine has to be running to keep you warm. But still not regretting getting it as a company car, as the other choice would still not have been delivered yet. And have already saved £5000 in tax

After 11 months with Outlander Phev, HS Phev is great. I use it in EV mode and it works great. Managed 40 urban miles here in the UK with 20% battery remaining. The infotainment isn’t much slower when compared to Outlander. 600+ miles, I’m enjoying it Update: MG HS clocked over 3000 miles. 1500 were long distance, the other half local EV more. Lane centring and ACC are great on motorway

I could have easily done the whole drive in EV only mode though and still have spare capacity but i wanted to simulate real-life usage and turned off ev mode when on faster roads. well over 200mpg over the route. in real life, i could comfortably manage in ev only mode in daily life with the engine only being used for longer routes. economy and performance are key to me as I normally drive an EV.

I have had my MG now for three weeks. I travel a 50km round trip to work and plug in at home each night. I dont have to worry about office conversations of $2.50/ltr fuel. Suspension is so comfy, screen takes seconds to load, im not a rev head so my corners are smooth. I drive the rav 4 hybrid pool car so i can compare. Driving the rav 4 after my MG it feels like the rav 4 needs a service!!! My air con wasn't great but once the windows were tinted its brilliant. I'm not used to a big turning circle but getting used to it...hey, its a big car! Way too much technology for me so much of it turned off. But hey if thats your thing the MG has it, bells and whistles! I wanted to downsize but still have SUV..gone bigger but so happy with my MG

We ordered a RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser AWD just before the delays and insane wait times now experienced for them - and managed to get a decent price deal too. In the bit over a year since we took delivery of the car after a mercifully short wait, it has been nothing short of sensational (who thought you'd ever say that about any Toyota!). A mix of city commuting and long distance hauls (including several circa 1000km country journeys) has seen a near constant fuel use in the region of 5.3 litres per hundred kms over about 25000kms of use. If the RAV4 PHEV was available in Australia, it could possibly be the perfect vehicle for many, many families/couples and wait times would likely be even longer here for that model. Then, when it's time to change cars, that other variable not discussed in the reviews comes into play - resale. If the insane demands for the RAV4 continue, chances are the loss on sale will be minimal (I've actually had people offer me significantly more than I paid for it to sell to them - madness) and I'm not certain that same benefit would translate into the MG ownership experience. I'm certainly not anti MG (we bought our daughter an MG3 as her first car - it's been terrific for a novice driver's car) but the RAV4 is really a step above in driving sensation, material quality and pretty much every respect over its MG rival in this test, bar some of the more subjective elements. Credit where due, the screen tech in the MG is classy looking, which certainly exceeds the interior presentation in the RAV4. Overall, the RAV4 hybrid AWD Cruiser is definitely worth the price and the wait required to have one in your garage.

i agree on that. would have been better if the shortcut buttons for volume were for fan speed instead as you can still adjust volume from the steering wheel. 3 different ways of adjusting volume is overkill. having said that there is a shortcut key to access hvac. once there a screen flick turns the temp up or down. heated seats are a button press from here too. dont know if they are on oz spec though as you have much nicer climate.

I feel there is an important aspect of buying a PHEV and/or a full EV that seems to be being ignored by reviewers - pretty much all of them don't have a spare tyre. Not even a space saver. Instead you get a plug in air pump (thats what the "generous/featured 12v outlet in the boot is for) and a puncture repair kit - usually with the gunk that finds and fills holes that the tyre outlets hate and will only sell you a new tyre instead of a proper repair. And what happens if you slash the tyre sidewall or have more than a nail in the tread - your stuffed. I'm not against electric and found this all out when I went looking at new PHEV's - particularly the Mitsubishi outlander PHEV. But I've now swapped range anxiety for puncture anxiety instead. I really wanted a PHEV because I'm sick of the high cost of fuel and the consumption of my present vehicle - I saw it as a perfect answer to my many short trips and occasional longer trips. And I need a wagon. And I liked the safety aspect of AWD. But alas, the lack of a spare tyre is a deal breaker for me. So are reviewers being ordered not to discuss this fact by the car makers for fear of being locked out of cars to review?

motor journalist reviews are usually on a different planet and this is no different. I don't know what the average drive is in Australia but here in the UK the EV range the mg offers would cover most journeys. The engine is really only there for fast roads and longer journeys. Price wise again I can't speak for oz but the Toyota is at least £10k more expensive here without factoring in running costs, lord knows what the higher trim levels cost. A fairer comparison would have been the mg PHEV vs the rav4 PHEV.

I've been with a lot of brands but my preferred brand is Toyota. Built to last. I hate buying Chinese nowadays as it makes no sense to me to finance what the CCP has turned into. Currently have a Suzuki and a Nissan - so loyalty only goes so far and the car has to fit. See the difference between fuel costs as rather minor - depreciation, service, reliability, longevity are greater in my mind and Toyota does very well overall.

It’s surprising how well the MG HS comes across compared to the RAV4, as they are fairly new, way smaller than Toyota as a company, against mighty Toyota’s best selling vehicle. The RAV4 being noisy when the engine kicks in is a terrible show of cost-cutting. I wouldn’t buy either car thought, I’ve get the Ford Kuga/Escape!

People have to get a grip about Chinese Cars. Most major car makers use Chinese parts or have plants in China. VW, VOLVO, GM ETC. MG are made in some of the highest tech factories in the world. MG include components from tier 1 companies world wide. Motors from GM, gearboxes from Aisin (Japan) used in BMWs etc,., Lighting and safety tech from Bosch, breaking systems from Continental, tyres from Michelen etc Get a grip people just about all cars are global productions including China tech. Before you start bagging an MG, go drive one, check out the quality. Then you can have an opinion. Mostly the bagging is from uninformed twats spreading other fools rhetoric.

This review sounded biased in favour of the Toyota as if his mind was already made up. My son has the MG zs which is a great car apart from the range issue. I have to say that the MG is much cheaper to buy or lease here in UK than the Toyota. So I'd go for the MG any day. 42K for the Toyota but 28K for the MG. Ask yourself is the Toyota worth twice as much ? Let's get real!!!

The RAV4 PHEV, called the Prime, is arguably the most in demand car in the world right now. This MG is almost 3years newer, so supposed to appear more modern. But there are clear design errors. And don't be deceived by the apparently impressive but cheap tech. I own a new Outlander PHEV. I'm betting its AWD drive train will be better, smoother and beat my neighbour's dad's new MG PHEV . You should avoid buying Chinese vehicles on principle, but look deeper and you are only getting a mirage of value by being enticed by price. Just what you'd expect from them copying others' tech and design, trying to mimmic quality and specs on the cheap, but ending up with something not quite right. Buy a car made in a non american democracy and you can't go wrong.
