2022 MG HS PHEV (inc. 0-100) review. The best affordable plug-in hybrid SUV?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is Australia's cheapest plug-in hybrid SUV! But...is it any good? Paul Maric investigates! It's the 2022 MG HS Plus EV Excite (it's a bit of a mouthful!) and it can be driven on full electric mode, as a hybrid or just in petrol mode.

We were looking to get a Rav4 for the obvious reasons for my wife & we had pretty much settled on our decision but I went & got a MG ZS EV for myself, when I took her to take it for a test drive, she spotted the HS PHEV & fell in love with it. Not only was the MG HS PHEV cheaper than the Rav but we didn't have to wait 10 months because they were available in dealerships just like the ZS, mind you this was last year just before they all sold out. We were super lucky, we got a great deal on both cars from a dealer that had a sale on stock they had in the yard. We saved almost 5k. Also the fact that it was a plug in hybrid meant you could drive on full EV mode & also she like the look more than the toyota.

I have had one in Thailand for over a year now. Get 69km of EV only range. We charge it from the home solar. Often we take it out in the morning and then give it 3-4 hours of charging in the middle of the day and can drive in EV mode again in the afternoon. Comes with an app on the phone so you can switch on the aircon before you get back to the car and do "find my car" Never had any problems with it, got one notification on the app telling me that one of the tire pressures was a bit low.

I am looking at the HS and HS PHEV this week at the Bangkok Motor Show. An extra 210k bht can get you the PHEV X vs the petrol X trim, but it will take close to 4+years to get that back based on 1000 bht of petrol a week, which is on average what we use now. So solar or not, in five years I will be changing cars again. Wife says if we travel more we get the difference back faster. I love that girl math lol. Still, I like to PHEV as something I have not had before and it can charge up at night I guess for city use. There is a special interior trim you can only get on PHEV also, so there is that.

Fyi, this car is not for long road trips. I had a rental car over a long weekend, I drove 1200 km and fuel consumption was 8,5 l/100km. To be fair, battery charge was 0% when I got the car and when returning it was likewise 0%. I drove mostly German Highways (Autobahn and cruise control at 130 km/h). For comparison, I have now been driving VW Passat 2022 (diesel) with similar distance, roads and speed limit and the fuel consumption is 4,7 l/100km.

Hi Paul. I'm enjoying my ownership so far. Charging can be done at 7.2 kWh from the 22kw free chargers at the likes of Woolies and Cole's. The acceleration is much quicker than you experienced. Overall consumption over 1550kms has been 15.6 kWh per 100 KMs and a total fuel usage of $39. @ $1.90 per litre. The speed over the humps @ 130kph doesn't apply in WA as the max speed legally is 110 kph.

Good question. certainly a lot less than this time last year. Some people might never need to put fuel in. At 5l per 100 difference, that's a savings of nearly $10 for every hundred at the minute. It's still 10000 km per $1000 saving. What's the price gap between this and it's ice version?

Tiny gas tank 36 liters. When you want to refuel ( which you’ll do a lot on a long trip ) it takes 1-2 minutes holding an inconvenient button in place to get the fuel door to open. All the touch screen controls are quite laggy. Think 3-5 seconds to get a response. No heat when you’re in EV mode. Proximity key still requires that you hit a button on the doors to open. I’ve left it on a few times as the start stop button needs to often be pressed a few times to get it turned off. Overall a nice value but it seems the designers didn’t really live with the car in the real world

haha the lag on the monitor depends on the processor speed, lol it actually performs well as a monitor there is less lag than some of the more expensive PHEVs lag can be caused by a number of factors. Application performance is linked to sensitivity which can be impacted by things like dirt on your fingers, but even more likely of whether or not the application has had an update or not, which in this case by the fuel economy and performance I would say this vehicle in the video needs a service.

Great review Paul. Interesting car and crazy how quickly the Chinese manufacturers have caught up to the established ones on the hybrid tech. That combined power figure is nudging that of Falcodores of yesteryear but didn't really show in the 0-100! Would be great if you included the fuel tank capacity as well, and the range (combined and ICE only), less of a big deal on non hybrid or non EVs but some manufacturers will shrink the fuel tank to fit the PHEV battery so be good to include that info for this type of car. At that price and without knowing MG's long term reliability track record I'm not sure it quite makes the case for a purchase but probably decent on a lease.

It would be interesting if you could include comments about how the cars you test perform in the city and suburbs, where most people drive 90% of the time. Isn't the point that during the week and around home you just use it in electric mode and charge overnight. For special trips away from home you don't have to worry about infustructire of charging point, especially as people all like to go away on public holidays. So the petrol consumption isn't a big issue as you probably won't use it as a petrol car that much or you would buy a different car

Would have been nice that it charged at 7kw which is what some EV and phev owners install at home and they have in Woolies. Glad that it gives distance between the rear object and car. So much useful for small garage ehere you don't want the tailgate open the wall while opening. And that the windows go down fully is great.

I just posted pretty much the same as I am looking to buy the HS X (top trim) or the HS PHEV X next week. The PHEV is an extra 210k bht, which is over 4 years of petrol based on what we burn in our CRV now. Given I don't follow the CC church on CO2, what the PHEV offers me is low fuel use, plus others option like interior trim that only PHEV offers and of course if the petrol konks out I might have enough battery to get to a servo. If the dealer gets a bit closer on price, the wife likes the PHEV as she never has one before. So there is that, and I do like good engineering. Hopefully regardless of which we get the car works OK.

Other factors to consider: The PHEV is a much more powerful car for times when you use both engines - 0-100 in 6.9 seconds, much smoother and quieter to drive in EV mode so you are buying a better car. Also you will get more for the car when you sell it.

If you understood how the 1.7l figure was generated you would realise its irrelevance. You should also factor in 16.6kWh at say 30c which is another $5 or about 2.5l of fuel cost. Also the 1.7l is expensive 95RON so your 2.8l was really $12 worth of consumed energy so not cheap to run.

Thanks for the review, Paul. Not impressed with the high gas mileage, it's expected much less consumption as an EV. Driving range is not good enough aswell. Acceleration isn't satisfying considering the total torque output. Seems everthing is fake on Chinese cars and doesn't meet claimed specifications.

Agree with other replies given. Maybe also do a little thinking yourself too. Getting over 7 l/100 obviously means insufficient driving done in EV mode on test. Don't just take the numbers given for performance and economy as the be all and end all. These kinds of cars are definitely quite efficient for the conditions they are designed for ie city driving. Look at other reviews to form a balanced opinion on the merits of any vehicle you might be interested in.

I am looking for PHEVS that can fast charge in the space we get energy then run my shop and or home. I can use my car as a generator . If need be.. to my knowledge there's only one car like that in SA. And that's the Mitsubishi. Salute to you.
