Lulu is the audio equivilent of two girls one cup.
I am not a metal head but a big Lou Reed fan. I am also a big believer in what metal music represents. I am 59 years old and a punk fan. Metallica's biggest influence is Motorhead, according to them, and they are really not a metal band- actually, a rock n roll band- speed metal if you must, but what the hell is that anyway? Bottom line, this was Reed's swan song- he knew it to be, he was dying. Metallica was thrilled just to to be with him, this is an attribute not a dismissal. These are musical artists not giving a fuck, being somewhat self-indulgent but in the good way. This is not commercial, This is not metal. This is not punk. This is not hardcore. This is a very good band backing up a poet/artist on his way out and doing an excellent job conjuring up the Velvet Underground at times. And this is a poet/artist going for broke, being a bit more poetic/abstract in his lyrics, a bit more profane and outrageous as his lyrics were. I can understand why a lot of folks say this is garbage. But try to understand why I say- this is one of the best albums I've heard in the last twenty years. This does right by Lou Reed's exit. This is a great tribute to Mettalica. And this is alright if you don't get it. I believe Lou did. And I can't imagine that Metallica will ever regret this album.

+slimedog Sadly most metal fans don't like lyricism. If they hear great riffs and shredding and crap lyrics its the best song ever for them.

I appreciate the idea of the album which is interesting when two worlds collide. I knew it was not a heavy metal album or a poetry album but this songs are boring to me. I listened to this album just once and honestly it has been hard to arrive at the end of the album. Probably it has been thought for a theatrical pièce but it is boring to listen to as an album. Sorry but I miss the point of this album.
One of the best reviews you've ever done. LOVE IT DOM!
Awesome log, totally on board with this view.
I'm just dying to hear Bob Yule's review of Stockhausen's Helikopter-Streichquartett!
I've got the first 5 Metallica albums, and that's ALL the Metallica I will ever bloody need.
Yeah I completely agree, Lulu wasn't a fresh step for anything other than for them to look at themselves and maybe reconsider decisions they make in the future. I think they need to take a break and listen to their older material as well as their early influences to get back to shape in Metal. All they need to make a great Metal album is there.
totally agree!!!!
Zero Tolerance > Metal Hammer. I'm really enjoying Dom's videos, though. Tempted to subscribe to the channel.
Lulu is an absolutely brilliant album. Best of metallica's by far.

Metal Hammer Official Metallica's dicography has been rather mediocre, in terms of metal, until this album. This is the album that actually tries to achieve something. It is the most unique by far.

Wesley 3 It's definitely refreshing to see a band trying to be creative rather than sticking to a tried-and-tested formula, even if the results aren't to everybody's tastes. Thanks for sharing Wesley.
well i completely agree with you on that subject i think that metallica need a beter producer and even i didnt think that they were even thinking about this while they were making the album they need to kick it up a notch for the next album
There was chat of a collaboration between Mustaine, Hetfield, Ellefson and another drummer (not sure who but I'd suggest Lombardo) which could be interesting but I do wonder whether they'd be able to put their egos aside.
I still love MetallicA and everything they do. .....I didn't even think about buying Lulu though, and never will.
As a Metallica fan I LOVED THIS REVIEW!
Best and most articulate review of Lulu I have ever heard. Also, best response to idiots that mistake this tedious nonsense as "art".
right on m8 im with you on this
Yep this guy said everything. Nice video!
I could honestly listen to this guy all day.
At 11:41, Dom does make a good point, though. Metallica could you know do something they used to do if they still want to work under the Metallica banner.
Please, could someone explain me why this is an interesting album?
i am the table!!!
S&M is brilliant - i understand why it might not be everyone's thing, especially die hard thrash fans, but the combination of classical and metal i love :P
Indeed, but instead, they are off to make a heavier Black Album. Damn, they need to make a Master Of Puppets II. It would restore their name in Metal I think, as well as get their music making process back.
You're right dude. In fact, only ONE good album is enough to make a band a Metal monster, as well as only one good invention is enough to make a man a genius. It's not about the quantity, it's the quality that counts, and the quality of Metallica music is incomparable.
Hmmm, well either way, I do look forward to hearing some new Sabbath. Ozzy's work with Sabbath is far superior to his solo commercialized work imo, so really anticipating it. Oh, and btw, I finally went to a concert, saw Slayer and Motorhead live, was fucking awesome. {:-)
Kill 'em All was pure energy and excitement. Ride the Lightning was a powerhouse of sound. Master of Puppets was Metallica's 9th symphony. ...And Justice for All was the worlds greatest homage to a bygone artist. Metallica was a redefining album riddled with great moments of musicality. Load and Reload were peppered with 'fun' rock romps. Garage Inc. was showed Metallica having fun, and it was fun to listen to. Unfortunately, I don't have anything to say about their latter 3 albums.
Eh, Technically speaking, they made 7 Metal albums, with the Black Album, St. Anger, and Death Magnetic. Many don't like these albums (I do for some reason, I dig the sound) but they are still Metal. What is good or bad is all opinion. But enough on that, time to bust out some Kreator.
"It sounds like a wasp in a bucket." Omfg hahahaha!
quite so indeed
You my friend, are the table naaa I'm only joking mate, you've got point and explain it in a polite and clear way, thank-you \M/
I liked Black Album, Load, Reload and St.Anger :P
To the point and funny review! Agree with most of what you say, especially them being "out of touch". It seems that even being a drummer is embarrassing to Lars nowadays, let alone for a metal band. No passion, he even takes pride in never practising. However, S&M was a good and innovative album, and Death Magnetic was at least decent (after poor St Anger)
as im looking at all of these comments, some are true and some are not, i notice people aren't realizing that Metallica knows they're not in spotlight of the type of fans they were acustomed to during the 80's and 90's. Back then their music had the same hype and popularity of what rap has today. With that being said, im not blaming them of exploring things in unfamiliar areas.
They have said that their next album will be like a heavier version of the Black Album. {:-/
Whats wrong with Death Magnetic?
I always hear people talk about Metallica as "The Biggest Metal Band" and that's certainly not far off I'd imagine but I also always get to thinking if they are, really. What about Iron Maiden? Now, I'm not talking out of my fanboyish ass here (well, not just anyway) but what is the basis for saying Metallica instead of Iron Maiden is the biggest Metal band in the world? Are there any numbers supporting this? Maybe one day I'll bother to actually look into it properly but until then, anyone have any thoughts on that?
Good review. I do think you are a bit harsh on Death Magnetic though but opinions vary. The production is shit on DM but I really enjoyed the songs and they made me smile and think Metallica are getting back "on track". The tracks were too long mostly but there were some awesome riffs. Lulu just redefines the meaning of crap though.
You should do areview of ride the lightning. Their best album;).
12:08 Well said.
*Oh my God What Have They Done*??? he's right. this question is absolutely justified
gr8 album, I like it alot
Their problem is that a producer wouldn't have the chance to tell them what to do. The guy who mixed Justice said Lars came in with drawings of how his drums should be EQd, so they obviously don't give a shit about letting an engineer or producer get on with his job becasue they think they know better. It's maybe why they've avoided going to Andy Sneap to record becasue it would just be a case of butting heads. I'd love to hear Metallica with a Sneap production though.
Haha! I love the line of thought about Metallica being embarrassed around their artsy fans. Awesome!!
I like this guy's honesty. Makes him a lot more endearing than the typical elitist reviewer.
Depends on the magnitude of the album
That’s why I love iron Maiden, you can trust in Maiden throughout the years
"If I am (that tedious), it's your own fault for sitting here and listening to it". Wouldn't someone's response that sitting there and listening to it provides a "talking point" counter that? That's the brilliant argument you used earlier in the context of "Why are you listening to Lulu, or Lou Reed with Metallica if you don't like it?"
Metallica releasing a bad album does not mean they hate their fans. James lit himself on fire for the fans. And Death Magnetic had The End of the Line, The Day that Never Comes, All Nightmare Long and The Unforgiven III.
Anyone who thought Death Magnetic was the missing album between Justice & Black Album has either never heard either of those albums or is on every mind altering drug in the book.
You're right, making a bad album doesn't mean they hate their fans. Here are a couple of examples of why they do a) They have become lazy live- forgetting lyrics & music, using a tape for song intros etc. b) they sued their fans over Napster, c) they insult their metal fans -Lars said the metal community is "up it's own ass" & "there are some very hardcore metal fans out there that like everything pre-packaged in a particular little box...the minute you veer outside of that they have a hernia"
i love dom he da man
@musicalkaratekid Especially if they did it on a German play that wasn't garbage, like something that's, well, not Frank Wedekind.
As much as I love Metallica, this was hilarious :D Death Magnetic is the best album they've done since The Black Album. My opinion.

I can't listen to Death Magnetic. The bloated songs and bad riffs are one thing, but the hideous production just kills it for me. I like a lot of black metal so I appreciate a raw production, but it just doesn't work for Metallica, who should have a super polished sound that fits their status.
"...They've not been well produced since the Black Album." If I recall, the vast majority of Metallica purists were angry about the polished sound of that album - those same fans complained about the "sparse" production qualities of AJFA. Sometimes, being the Biggest Metal Band on the Planet™ isn't all its cracked up to be in terms of the scrutiny they are under. I will agree with you about Lulu however......one of the most misguided decisions made by a big metal band in the history of heavy music.
Sabbath? I dunno, I heard Iommi has cancer, the dude is getting pretty up there in age so I'm not sure if they'll do anything more. Do look forward to it however.
Meshuggah are consistant with their albums and go in different directins in each one. They portray a metal monster as it were
A very astute review.......you can tell you really gave it a "good" listen.
I wonder what would happen if a band that was actually from germany did a concept album based on a german play. Y'know, like rammstein.
Haha fucking hilarious review. I was crying in laughter throughout.
I've noticed that the people who like or even LOVE the Lulu album are Lou Reed fans. Even more interesting is that fans of the Lulu album all defend it by saying "You don't like it because it is so far above you musically and artisticly."
I personally enjoy St. Anger, however it isn't exactly their best album. Metallica's music is supposed to say, "HEY LISTEN!!!!!" when the riff kicks in. But I still enjoy it. Lulu on the other hand, I have no idea what they were thinking. Maybe they were back on drugs. After Death Magnetic came out they go and fucking make Lulu. I personally think they did that on purpose, to see if anyone would buy shit on a CD with the name "Metallica" on it. I wouldn't accept if they gave it to me personally.
Fair enough mate, I quite liked Broken, Beat & Scarred. But isn't it sad that we have to say things like "it's not that bad" or "it's better than their last album"? I mean this is the band who defined heavy metal for over 10 years with consistently brilliant albums. I would disagree about the intros by the way- St Anger is far more memorable than DM, even though it is a horrible abortion.
MetallicA Is the nr one biggest and most sucessful band in the music history
This review is amazing it's as if Dom read my mind I wish Lars and Co. would watch this. I have loved Metallica since '89. I have walls plastered with rare Metallica vinyl, signed posters etc. I've seen them live many times, I even overlooked St Anger and Death Magnetic as minor missteps but Lulu is the final straw. I actually now hate Metallica as much as they hate us, their fans. I refuse to listen to any new album by them. Testament's new cd is due out- get that instead and support real metal
Metallica needs to find their way and not always looking for a gravy train. I am a metalhead, hard rock, 70s rock, and prog rock fan that knows where true energy, spirit, and heart comes from in real music! Metallica like I said has been heartbroken by Cliff and the Grammys. They need to find IT again and the great music will shine once more.
neagudan Not that I care too much as it's a fairly pointless argument, Iron Maiden have not sold more records than Metallica, in both recorded figures since SoundScan started and in estimates.
CDs? You can fit that entire room on one modern hard drive. Cover scans and all.

Not your fucking problem mate.
I am the table
theyre fucking with us.
Lulu was a funny troll album =P At least it wasn't Metallica's Cold Lake. Nothing will beat ever beat Celtic Frost - Cold Lake
Metallica as a whole either need to decide whether they want to be like AC/DC, Motorhead, or Slayer and play what they are best at and keep it interesting or learn how to take their passions of other music styles and feed the energy to everyone! The best music involves drugs, heart, energy, passion, and taking chances that will harness your band and the fans! A family, business, band, etc.. become the most successful when they use creative powers and have the heart and soul to create it.
I love how so many people pissed their shit over this album and when I actually took the time to listen to it and went "this is what people are bitching about?" People lose their shit over nothing.
100% agreed on Death Magnetic. That album was mediocrity at best. The only reason people praised that album was because of that ear-raping album St. Anger, they put out before. Metallica should listen to Fight Fire With Fire and slap themselves.
Obviously this was an experiment and it failed but thats the beauty of this album. These mistakes will eventually create something epic maybe not from these 2 but maybe by other bands as well.
Only time will tell what they decide to do. It better be fucking remarkable, they need to apologize for Lulu.
Rob _what_?
It was great. There were some Deathcore bands that I didn't care for that I listened to anyhow, jumped in their mosh pit, was fun. Fucking Mayhem man, just awesome. {:-) Got a few vids of them too.
I gotta say... when you were using phrases like "Really great piece of art" and "Groundbreaking and Challenging" There was ONE album that kept popping up in my mind... and it was in no way metal. Yes - Close to the Edge
While I like the majority of Metallica's work, but I think that Lulu was a few postmodern experiments too far for them. And if Metallica were to work with someone, then I'd have expected them to work with King Diamond or Sean Harris or something.
thought i was the table....oh well....you are the table!!!!
They should make nice with David Mustaine, and ask for writing help.
?!?!
The least memorable intro for me is on St. Anger.God do I hate St.Anger but I really like Death Magnetic. Not all the riffs are memorable but there are some I like (eg.Cyanaide,The day that never comes,The judas kiss). You said that the production was poor-well I am only an average listener so to my ears it sounds normal.Though I have to say I really hate suicide & redemption. It's boring as fuck. You may hate Death Magnetic, and thats fine by me but I don't think it's that bad.
I think Metallica's first five album are great, however after that i think they wanted to experiment and move in a new direction. They have written some great songs after TBA but i think the majority of their fans want 80s metallica. Maybe they want to move on?
I AM THE TABLE
It's not pretentious.. It's not shit either. Just because it doesn't meet your musical expectations doesn't mean it's no good. They don't owe you anything, this was just something they were all interested in doing.. so they did.
We want Bob Rock back :)
James is great, Rob is actually an amazing musician if u listen to his Suicidal stuff, Kirk is overrated but he could still be metal, Lars is shit though. The should kick him out and they would release a sick album
"The best parts are when Metallica shuts up and Lou reed makes weird noises on his keyboard" 10:00 This is extremely painfull I think the Metallica of 1983 would just weep upon today's Metallica
Just now listened to its sampling. Its great. I DO know what Metallica is for. Lou has always been out of tune. Ill buy it
wow, apparently I'm not the only person who thought that st. anger was alright and death megnetic was quite boring and overestimated.
Lou Reed fans don't know about metal? I like The Velvet Underground...I also like Morbid Saint, Death, Kreator, and Emperor...Horrible album though, completely stupid idea. Like if Iggy Pop got with Slayer...Makes no sense to me.
I believe Dom has answered that better than I could -but basically (not in any order): 1) poor production 2) horrible guitar tone 3) no memorable riffs 4) long, boring, meandering songs 4) overrated & hyped as a return to form which it isn't. Do an experiment for me (actually do this) - play the first 45 seconds of Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice, the Black album, Load, Reload, St Anger and Death Magnetic. Which is the most boring and least memorable intro?
a) Lazy? watch?v=DnWJL1QTEHI b) Napster was stealing. I like CVS Pharmacy, but if they take me to court for stealing a Skittles, I'm not the victim there. c) That's only Lars, not Metallica as a whole. Name something that Kirk said that backs up your assertion. Plus, those were both aimed at a small group of people, not their entire fanbase. They may not be the best or the most skilled artists, but all those people at the above concert really means something.
Well, If I was stuck in a room with Lulu and a bunch of Dog Shit, I'd put the Dog Shit in my ears, as that would sound better than this album. So no, nothing can be worse than Lulu.
LOL "horrible abortion",love the way you swear. You have a point about the hole "it's better than their last album" thing but I am only 16,I was never there during Kill em all or Master of puppets. You should remember that musicians can't always write masterpieces.Anyway, thank you for the good argument :)
There are a lot of people talking out of their asses in the comments below. Take it as You will.
Dom, you brighten my day, just tell it like it is,SHIT IS SHIT
>Then he arranges the mixing with his half deaf hearing, so the treble is through the roof and the bass is non existent. Well, that's what I mean when I say overproducing, overdoing the loudness/attack of the production. Sadly, the bastard did this to the new Black Sabbath album :(
I don't dare listen to this album now :
