Drones is indeed a concept album, but until the song Aftermath, it's told from the perspective of a girl who is forced to become a "drone" and eventually rebels. The last two tracks are instead told from the perspective of a crazy dictator who wants to rule the world and ends up destroying it. The track is, according to Matt, Citizen Erased 2 but with the opposite theme, where in CE you had a person losing themselves inwards, The Globalist is about megalomaniac ambitions exploding outwards uncontrollably. According to them, it was the hardest track to record, that slide section took them 31 takes! Also, this is the longest single track they've made (i say single because, if you're in the vein for another long journey, i recommend the Exogenesis Symphony (part.1 Overture, part.2 Cross-Pollination and part.3 Redemption which combined clock in at around 13 minutes). Anyways, love your input as always. It's insane that for how good a musician you are you'd never properly listened to Muse.

The third part on the piano is heavily drawn from Elgar’s Nimrod from the Enigma Variations which is played at the annual Remembrance Parade in London and is reflective of the narrative of the song that it is played after the Apocalyptic element following the countdown. When played live it was complemented by scenes of devastation and resurrection from the ashes.

They have a few longer tracks relatively. Exogenesis: Symphony Pt. 1, 2 and 3 together clocks in at 12:11min. That piece of work off of The Resistance album is more a "meal" than a song though. Hopefully we get there down the line. 🤘

At this rate you’re going to go through their entire lineup, so I’m looking forward to seeing what you think of all the crazy different songs Matt and co. comes up with. I don't know if Muse ha really done a "concept album" in the sense of a chronological story, but they do seem to have central themes to some of their albums. If you like some slide guitar, have you seen Rango II by Vulfpeck? Some of the craziest sounding slide guitar I've heard. In a similar vein, Tom Monda from Than You Scientist frequently uses a steel-neck fretless guitar. The sounds he gets sliding on that thing has sort of become part of his signature sound.

Because it’s not a pop song or a commercial song. It’s a piece of music and I think the long heavy part is justified, it literally reflects a period of destructive war. Without context I understand the comment but I think Matt had other things in mind when writing this story (Drones album) from start to finish.

Because it’s not just a song. It tells a story, the long build up maybe unnecessary in many many pieces of music but is perfect for this song. Matt Bellamy thinks very carefully about why every part of his song is how it is, the song is about war and the outcome of a dictator going insane causing such destruction. Almost the dictator having a moment of sanity at the end realising what he’s created.
