Thank you for the video! 😇 I have Growatt SPF 3500 ES and JK BMS, what would be the protocol for RS485?

The protocol isn't published. I reversed engineer it as far as time permitted. Mine is running withe BMS it occasionally craps out as there are a few messages that I haven't handled which occasionally that causes a problem. Having said that it has been working for months, At the moment a data analyser is connected to the system but I haven't had time to analyse the data finish the code for the interface box.

@@razenby I've got 12, 150 watt 24v panels ready for winter to end so I can get them up. I built 2 8S 100 Ah batteries and just got everything for a new 8s 280Ah ,with full heat pad. A 7.5 in X 25 in, auto temp was only around $39.00. on E-BAY. Also on amazon too.

Very useful video i have a similar set up but the battery does not charge to 100% because i think the percentage seen in the shine app are higher than the jk percentage and so switches off based on the inverter percentage which reaches 100% before the jk percentage. Have you experienced this and know how to change inverter percentage

Are you set to lead acid charge mode? What battery technology are you using? Lithium Cobalt or Lithium Iron Phosphate? using the inverter control panel, change the inverter settings to the desired the termination voltage of the Lead Acid charge cycle to coincide that required by battery pack. You can also adjust the discharge 'cut off' in the Shine App to coincide with the lowest voltage you are comfortable for your battery pack. It takes a bit of experimentation. I cant advise any values as I don't know what chemistry you are running there.

I've always struggled with the Chinese mentality... this 'activation' of a BMS strikes me as just plain dumb. Great info, thanks! 👍

It is an odd thing. I have reasonable relations with the manufacturer as I am importing these units. I have asked but they cant explain why it is necessary. Maybe they are checking that you have the charger polarity connected in the correct polarity.? You think that might be it? You are welcome.

you do not want self consumption in storage, so it is in sleep mode Once activated it is not meant to every be turned off. so it does make perfect sense when you think of the type of system it is meant for.

By removing that circuit they can claim a higher efficiency as well as cost cutting?

I am not sure why they need to sense a charge before they enable the unit. It might be an issue to do with the design of the 150A FET switch circuit. I can't see any technical reason why it would be necessary. Perhaps we will never know!

i think this pack is li-nmc chemistry: lithium nickel-manganese-cobalt. li-co (lithium cobolt) is a much older chemistry.

  • @razenby

True, traction batteries require the higher specific energy offered by this chemistry over LiCo. The voltage is a tiny bit lower compared to straight Lithium Cobalt Cells. In the winter they It charge overnight for 4 hours and produce 8kWh/day per pack. Going well so far.

Have you figured out how to get the CAN bus communication working yet? I have a Growatt 12k SPF12000TDVM-MPV inverter and the 200 amp JIKONG BMS.

About half done. Running in C on my dev system. It is talking but the Growatt throws a wobbly and I have yet to capture the event. . JK wouldn't release the protocol at first but I got it via contact in China. I am running with Lead acid settings that work reliably with Lithium Cobalt batteries. The profile of the L/A charge fits but the Lithium Cobalt's remaining capacity is all over the place. I just set the inverter L/A CV voltage to an equivalent of when you want the charge to shift from CC to CV for Lithium. I don't have to intervene as it is all working. It takes the urgency off getting it done. Some of the processor chips we use in production have effectively gone obsolete due to a 45 week lead times and 400% price increase so I am switching micro development platforms and re-coding and laying out our product PCBs . A total waste of time thanks to Microchip. If I get it done I'll look you up.

@@razenby that's great news. Growatt would be wise to open source it and make it easy for people to develop compatible bms interfaces for their inverters. Thanks for working on it. 👍
