4. Light Blue Veronica Persica Boutonniere - gentl.mn/2SxM7c3
With that said, let's dive into today's topic, the anatomy of the hat starting with basic vocabulary.
We'll start from the top of the hat and work downward beginning with the pinch, also known as the crease. The pinch or crease refers to the indentations made along the front, back, and sides of the hat in conjunction with the overall crown shape.
Next, we'll cover the crown. As you might guess, refers to the central body of the hat. The part that extends upward covering the head. In most cases, the natural shape of a hat’s crown is a dome, although exceptions do exist such as the straw boater, through a process called blocking where water and steam is applied to the surface of a hat, it can be shaped into any number of different crown configurations.
Next is the Hat band which is the strip of decorative material encircling the crown positioned just above the brim. It's most often made from a ribbon.
Next is the brim which as you may have guessed is the horizontal ledge protruding from the bottom of the hat and extending outward providing shade and protection from the elements for the wearer.
Next is the lining or liner tipping. The optional piece of fabric on the inside of a hat usually made from cotton or silk, though sometimes made from velvet that will feature the hat maker's trademark most of the time.
The sweatband or inner band is a strip just inside the crown that keeps the hat better fitted to the wearer's head and also diverts perspiration. It's most typically made of leather for felt hats and made of fabric for straw hats.
Next, let's cover a few vocabulary terms that refer more to general classifications than specific parts of a hat’s anatomy.
We'll start with the term snap brim which simply refers to a brim that can be snapped or turned on different parts.
The term stingy brim describes a hat with a very short brim usually of about one to two inches.
You might sometimes see hats described as being packable or crushable. A common misconception about this term is that the hat can be really beaten up, totally scrunched down into a ball and that it will perfectly reform itself once you take it out and shape it a little bit.
The term shapeable applies to hats that have a metal wire sewn inside of their brims.
Next, let's talk about UPF or more generally, sun protection from hats. There are also specific UPF ratings which are as follows; a rating anywhere from 15 to 24, the Hat will have an ultraviolet protection percentage of about 93 to 96 percent, a UPF rating anywhere from 25 to 39 and the hat will have a protection percentage of 96 to about 97 and a half percent, and finally, a UPF rating from 40 to anywhere above 50 will provide ultraviolet protection percentage of about ninety seven and a half percent to just over 99%.
The center crease or center dent style typically features one central crease that runs down the middle of the crown typically at a depth of about one to two inches.
The diamond crown is a slightly less popular shape than the more commonly seen teardrop but it was a popular style for a time in the 1940s and it's a little bit wider than your typical C crown shape.
Next is the flat top or telescope which is typically seen on everything from top hats to Gambler hats, straw boaters, and pork pie hats.
Finally, there's the open or round crown which simply refers to the natural shape of the crown before it's shaped into a different style.
We'd like to know if you wear hats regularly, what styles do you prefer? Share with us in the comments section below!

My first job, while a freshman in college, was at Hale's Hat Store in downtown Flint Michigan. That is all we sold, mens hats, fur felt. The major styles of the day were pinch front tea drop, center crease (pinch front and not), homburgs, derbies, all brim widths. Their were three of us, myself a part time college student, a retired gentleman and the owner. We were busy every day six days a week. From September to May, fur felt was the item of the day. After that straw. The boater was a big seller. Every man, all walks of life, wore a hat. in fact, a man wasn't dressed if he did not have his hat on. Now, if I want a real hat, I have to go online, or to the only men's hat store I know of in the area, Henry the Hatter in Southfield. I am often approached by people who tell me "I wish hats would come back." To which I answer, "they never left."

I truly hope your content helps a hat resurgence, the amount of complements I get in my suit and hat when leaving the bank to shop are incredible.

I have so many hats... Fedoras, top hats, bucket hats, flat caps, homburgs, beanies, baseball caps, a bowler hat, even an Elmer Fudd hat (among others) & never step outside without one. Hats are among one of mankind's greatest but most under rated inventions! They keep your head warm, they shield you from the sun & the rain & they make a statement about who you are as a person & as a man. And unlike so many other fashion accessories, good hats never go out of style.

Not oils are the problem with touching the crown or you would just move the problem to the brim. It is the pinching of the crown itself. If you do it several times a day all year long the felt will break. Using the brim and your hat will be in great condition for centuries.

Interestingly though, I've heard female hat enthusiasts say that you shouldn't grab the crown to avoid getting make up on it. Which is equally absurd. Having said that, there's a growing fashion for pre-distressed hats, so a hat smeared with colourful make up might be worth a fortune.

Some other useful terms include: The bash - synonymous with the crease and pinch, especially in the term hand-bash. The reed - a small fabric band to which the sweatband is sewn and which is then itself sewn to the hat body, i.e. the sweatband is not sewn directly to the hatbody. The prescence of a reed is typically a feature of better made hats. The welt - some brims are folded over (overwelt) or under (underwelt) and then this fold sewn in place. It is an alternative brim treatment and freakquently is seen on poorer quality felt hats, I suspect to give them more structural strength. Finally, with regards to your point about resting a hat on its crown to avoid distorting its brim, this only necessary for hats with stiff curved brims like top hats, homburgs and cowboy hats, where the weight of the crown will eventually distort the brim. Snap brims can be placed on their brims, although their brims should be snapped up all around. The exception would be a very small number of snap brim hats that have fore to aft arc in their brims too (the Campdraft from Akubra is an example), which also benefit from being left crown down. There is currently a fashion developings for hats with stiff, flat brims, which also, clearly, be left brim down.

I usually wear a hat to protect me from the elements! The Baker boy is easiest to style and works with the most outfits and you can just put it into your bag when you don’t need it! I’ve got a trilby with a snap brim and wide band that I occasionally use but it is more delicate and formal so works with less clothes so I wear it less! The Homburg I have I never wear as it is too formal, too light in colour and in my view seems anachronistic.

I own several ladies hats being a female, but I love wearing men's hats as well. I've been dying to find a good bowler hat but the crown heights are always so high! Way too high for my small face and frame and they tend to look a little ridiculous. The one that looks best on me, unfortunately, is a costume 'bowler' hat that I used in a dance recital as a child. I've seen photos of women wearing bowlers but I just cannot find any that look quite right. Lovely video, you look great!

I often wear a hat. I have a collection of Stetson fedoras (there's a factory outlet store not too far from my house). I have two that are in good shape and suitable of wearing with a jacket or suit - a Temple in caribou (gray) and a Saxon in walnut. I also have a brown Chatham and a gray Metropolitan that are fairly beat up, so they're my more casual/utilitarian hats. When I'm feeling like making an utter spectacle of myself, I have several inexpensive wool felt bowlers that I wear from time to time.

As a owner of too many Akubras including the Adventurer, believe the Federation IV to be the better purchase. Less taper better handle.More like The Poet. The only DM hat worth purchase is the Bushman. Another bashable...... Buy straight from OZ when the currency allows.

Guy Lewis, I know, I would be very tempted to get one if it were a little more tapered like the open crown Akubra Fedora (which must surely win a prize for lack of imagination in naming ). Unfortunately, my head is a very long oval, so it would ending up with the brim too high at the sides after conforming to my head.

Hmm... As a Brit I was wondering if you were going to go with American definition of trilby. Traditionally in Britain, the term trilby applies to anything with a snap brim regardless of brim width (so the hat commonly known as a porkpie is a type of trilby). The term fedora gets variable treatment here, some use it as a s type of trilby with an especially wide brim, some use it for down brim hats (especially if they have ribbon hatbands), some use it to refer to trilbies worn with brim snapped down at the front and back. Kind of messy on both sides of the Atlantic (there are even old US catalogue adverts that apply the term fedora to homburgs). I look forward to seeing the next two videos.

Yes, terms often vary in different locales. Our information is generally sourced from a variety of texts, with origins in America, Britain, Germany, and elsewhere, so we often try to reconcile the differences into one coherent definition. With that said, stay tuned for Part III of this series, wherein the trilby will be discussed at length. Thanks for watching and commenting! - Preston

They are messy terms, I just encourage people on both sides of the Atlantic to treat fedora and trilby as synonyms - seems like the most sensible thing to do.

I agree with regards to pork pies always being called pork pies, but they are still structurally trilbies. I know that plenty of Brits older than 50 agree with me. With regards to what the hatters around Jermyn Street say, well Christy's have even confirmed that fedora and trilby mean the same on their website (as have Laird, who admittedly are new to the hatting world). The reason that hatters like Christy's, Bates and Lock use the two different terms is to be to capitalise on the American market. The actual concept that trilbies and fedoras are different types of hats is absurd - the most frequent definition is to simply delineate between the two on the basis of brim size, with the trilby as the narrower. That by itself does not work as some companies, like Lock, sell trilbies with wider brims than some of their fedoras. Other differences people might try to cite is that trilbies have more tapered crowns or simple creases rather than teardrops, but again, you find great variety in crown shape across different brim widths.

Because I live in Fla I lean towards hats with wider brims. In winter I wear a felt Fedora style hat and in the summer I wear a couple of straws, one is a Panama style and the other is an very wide brimmed, high rounded crowned straw hat common in the mid 1700's (I'm a French and Indian to American Revolution reenactor). I have been mishandling my hats because I used the crease to remove, carry and &etc my hat, I have not corrected that. I end with a question, why did you snap the brim up when you put it down/on the hat rack?

  • @guylewis7418

    @guylewis7418

When you snap the brim up and place in down, the brim won’t flatten. If your brim doesn’t snap down, place it on the crown or place it on a rack.

Traditionally there are rules about colours associated with hats, as you mention about brown. Fairly obvious. Traditionally straw are not city hats (at least in northern Europe or northern North America), but these rules are pretty much gone. If you want to keep up the traditions, a good thing to do is to match hat colour to shoe colour - brown with brown, grey or black hat with black shoes.

In town, on the railroad, everywhere except punching cows. Not mentioned in the video, but the most popular men's hat in New Mexico is the three crease cattleman's style of cowboy hat.
