Bad to the fuucking bone! Prime VH! It doesn’t get better than this! That intro and that riff! Tithe bass and drums and insane Eddie solo! The 80’s fricken kicked ass! I was so lucky to grow up to this. Glad you guys liked it!
This song shows why the secret ingredient in Van Halen's success was Michael Anthony's backing vocals and bass.

Yep. Whole heartedly agree. Once VH #1 came out, within weeks every kid with 6 strings figured out tapping. But Anthony's harmonies WERE what made you know you were listening to Van Halen.

@exodus21v20 So the guys should never try anything different from their other stuff and just remain one dimensional? God forbid they do anything different. Let them just do the very same sound in all their songs. Ice Cream man is a fun light hearted song that still jams. Eddie has a fantastic solo in it, and, oh yeah, that is NOT an a cappella tune.
@lisaw5604
4 жыл бұрын
I'll accept whatever outcome, but is this John Brim blues cover of "Ice Cream Man" really a banger, as the guys have been requesting? I give VH credit for covering it though, just like Diamond Dave's, "Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody". They're both cool songs. ;)
"I'm the One" off the first album is a a fire storm barn burner. The whole band shines on this song and is great album closer. Also for something different, again from the first album is the song "Little Dreamer" a slower almost mysterious sounding song. Again the whole band shines and are hungry on this debut.

You can NEVER go wrong with Van Halen. Fair Warning is Edward's favorite guitar album. It was his most complex of the first 6 albums. Dark tone and angry. Edward said he wasn't happy with his professional life when he wrote the music to that album and his angst is our joy.

@@MrAitraining And D.O.A. That's my favourite Van Halen song. Definitely the best fade out of any Van Halen song. These are the songs that need to played but won't. Van Halen never sounded as good as they did on Van Halen II.
Alex Van Halen (drummer) came up playing jazz with his dad in clubs so that's where his "looseness" comes from. I don't know how you haven't heard of Alex Van Halen in drum circles. His snare sound and heavy drumming is legendary.
Absolute banger. One of Eddie's nastiest, most aggressive riffs ever recorded. Of course the rhythm section provided a muscular drive underneath. And David Lee Roth's Cock-of-the-Walk vocals provided the jagged edge, and almost seemed to foreshadow rap, in a way.
This song and "Atomic Punk" from the first album are my absolute favorites from Van Halen...

Atomic Punk by VH....BADASS!!!!"
Thank you guys..."Take your Whiskey Home" next drunk reaction 🤘
RIP Eddie, thanks for the music. Imagine how we felt the very first time it was played. That is why Van Halen was the bomb back in the day.
DLR was asked in an interview once "How long did it take you guys to gel as a band?" and his immediate reply was "None. We're all classically trained musicians."
''Hear about it later'' and from the Hagar era ''Summer nights'' those two songs are just insanely good and underrated.
"I'll Wait" would be awesome! Alex's drums on that song is epic.
The way you react to this song is how i did a 100 years ago: disbelieve, smiling from ear to ear, loving every minute of it. Gosh, you're so lucky to listen to music for the first time. Keep doing just that and posting it. It's truley a great way for young people to get introduced to ' classic' music. And, like me, old folks get to sort of re-live that feeling. Cheers, mates. Lots of love, Nancy 🤘❤
"Unchained" is my favorite song from this album, and one of my favorite songs period. Definitely a banger!

Eddy has that gift to know where and when to bring his magic in. Not many have this talent. Towards the end EV could have put all kinds of riff in but he injects a subtle ending that just blows the mind. Crank it up and let the neighbors enjoy too.
This VH song has probably one of the sickest guitar riffs I’ve ever heard…(once that verse kicks in…wow). Eddie was unreal on guitar, right rhythm section and a wild man leading the pack.

Quote: “On Van Halen (first album) I was a young punk” Edward Van Halen
Like Queen, 38 Special and the Cars...their sound belongs only to them. You instantly know its VH.
If I remember correctly this is the first song on Fair Warning. The entire album is amazing. Rock bands in that era would pump out amazing records like this constantly. This generation today doesn't have rock bands.
Most badass groove ever, I get goose bumps every time. I'm glad I found you guys listening to it. The reaction was great
Just do this whole album!!🤘🏻
3:26 - You know the riff is rad when you feel the pain!
The summer of '81 was off the charts. Fair Warning and Moving Pictures were playing on every teenager's turntable or cassette deck. Rush and Van Halen played back to back nights at the Aladdin Hotel of the Performing Arts in Las Vegas. Rush, June 15, 1981 and VH, June 16.
Well done .. AGAIN! My band played this song back when and our name was taken from it "Fair Warning". This was a fun song to play. Our guitar player at this time was 17 years old and could do all those licks! Another great one guys! You rule.
Gotta love Van Halen! When I was young, I remember someone once described them as a "garage band that found fame without ever leaving the driveway". I still laugh at that quote....and still have no idea if that was meant as a compliment or not. I'm one of those oddballs who likes all versions of Van Halen. David Lee Roth fit the image of the garage band front man, whereas Sammy Hagar brought a more polished sound with him. It was a huge deal when Sammy replaced David. A lot of people who had been Van Halen fans from the beginning turned their back on the band because they thought it wasn't rock and roll enough or something foolish like that. Others who had been there from the beginning who liked the "Van Hagar" version of the band were ridiculed and told they didn't know music. It was scandalous and complete chaos for their hardcore fans. Check out "Runnin' with the Devil", "And the Cradle will Rock", "Unchained", and "Panama". A couple songs with Sammy doing lead vocals I recommend "Love Walks In", "Black and Blue", "Poundcake", and "Right Now" (for something a little different).

@Justin Kase It was all about Eddie's guitar playing. I don't care WHO was singing. They could have had Britney Spears singing, and it would STILL rock.(no offense to Britney Spears, I was just trying to think of someone that didn't fit in a predominantly metal band). Now that I think about it, she might fit in pretty good. I definitely would rather WATCH HER than DLR or Hagar. ;)

Eddie is doing two things in the opening that I don't know the technical terms for. He is fingering the notes with the left hand while playing them by hitting the strings with his right, occasionally hitting shifted harmonics. I hope that made sense. "Unchained."

Sooooooo glad you guys "found this" song /era. Take a bow.
E-freeking-ruption Remember...bands like Van Halen were on their way out in 1978 with the advent of punk which, in its own, condescending way, tore down Rock ‘n Roll to save it (baby where are you now when I really need you!) Van Halen was a big brick wall that said: “Is that all you got-hold my beer!” (It’s an overused statement but that’s exactly what it was.) When we walked into the record...then the shows back in the day...there’s an old Maxell ad with a guy sitting in a chair which perfectly represents what I’m saying...I don’t have the words! Anyway, you need a nuclear reactor for power, a wall of Marshall stacks and a King King sized set of subwoofers to begin recreating today! Back then, bands like Van Halen did it for a ten-buck concert ticket! So, what I’m saying is, get in front of the biggest stereo you guys have access to, and cause irreparable damage to your hearing...you’ll thank me later! Cheers guys!
I’m the One, Hot for Teacher, Take Your Whiskey Home, The Cradle Will Rock....ANYTHING from the Roth era Halen is good.

It's cool to see two guys head-banging to a song that came out at least 20 years before they were born! I did the same thing in the 80's to rock bands from the 60's. Good music is age-less, my friends, and will always bridge the generation gaps.
Love him or hate him David Lee Roth IMHO is one of the best front man to ever grace the stage ..

Little Guitars is one of my favorites. Such a great tune.
So many bad ass songs on those early Roth era VH albums. Also a few jokey songs, proving that they could have a good laugh while kicking your axx. Runnin' With The Devil has always held a big spot in my heart as it was my first VH song. Nothing sounded like that in 77. Also dig DOA, The Cradle Will Rock, heck....anything off the first 2 albums. Good review, guys. Keep rockin'!
One of my all time favourite tracks from one of my all time favourite albums. This and Hear about it later.....God! They were such an awesome fucking band!
I haven't even watched this yet, but this is my all time favorite EVH opening riff.
"Down on the Street" - The Stooges (1970). It's a different kind of bangin', but it gets ya there! Already put my Hot For Teacher vote in... So, thought I'd mention.

Everybody Wants Some with its jungle, primal sound almost reminds me of a Fun House-era Stooges song. Yeah, Down on the Street for sure.

@@Itelkner Agree. Both albums are experimental, so maybe that's the similarity? ("Dirt" is also amazing). -- Love 'Everybody Wants Some'. Not many like Women and Children album, so I went to most iconic. Hey, thanks... Nice to see another Stooges fan! :)

@Lisa W You're welcome! Nice to meet you as well. 1978, I'm 11 and at the local mall record store. I see "Raw Power" in the cutout bin with the 'Nice Price' sticker on it. I'm mesmerized by the cover and a little scared, but I gotta hear it. So I take the record up to the counter and the guy who worked there, Dave, listened to it with me through headphones. We were both blown away by how hard it rocked and I was a Stooges fan from then on. Nobody else knew about this record or talked about it. I LOVE "Down on the Street" and listen to it often in the car. It reminds me of James Brown's funk era grooves. Love "Women and Children First," too. Here's a childhood friend of mine doing the vocals for "Down on the Street" in a one-off Stooges tribute band for a special event. You might enjoy it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l3xmy6d8pZqspag.html He discovered the "Raw Power" on his own too way back and become a life-long fan as well.

@@Itelkner We basically had the same experience. I was far too young, but saw the Fun House album cover and was transfixed. I thought, 'Oh, The Stooges - Funhouse. This looks fun!' Oh my god. When I started listening, I couldn't stop. I didn't understand what all of the content was until I was older. Now, I appreciate the heck out of what went into these recordings. They had to set up the recording studio, like a stage because they weren't capturing the Iggy/Stooges magic. So this music is totally improvised and live. Unreal. -- Thank you for sharing your experience! Enjoyed. Will give cover a listen. Have a great weekend! :)

@@Itelkner Oh man, I watched it. They did the Stooges proud. Raw. Letting it all hang out. Tell your friend and mates, I really dug it! Thank you so much! :)) edit add: I didn't know they did more... I have to say "Loose" was perfection. (more to watch, so. lol) Very Cool!
One of my favorites. I freaked when I saw him do Cathedral live. Couldn't believe he was doing that with a guitar
my daily bread and butter when I was young. It is so amazing that the excitement about this music has not changed at all. It is simply said good music.
