Far from it. I'm in my early 50s,been a massive fan since about 1981. What's interesting is that people I know of a similar age to, including former work colleagues, have only really got into Rush in recent years. There will never be another band like them, though I'd love to be proven wrong....

As a 50 year old woman, I don't think you guys can possibly understand how important radio was in the 80's. I literally woke up every morning to my favorite radio station as I did my hair. Calling into the radio station so they would play my favorite song, and have my cassette player ready to record the songs. the power of radio was very strong. For real. The power of radio really did make my morning move.

I'd have to agree that they definitely aren't underrated. All three are master musicians in their own rights and myself being a drummer Neil Peart was my biggest influence. if anything I would say the younger generation knows the songs but might not be able to put a name with it. They kinda laid low for many years, only 3 albums in the 2000s and weren't controversial figures.

I've heard this music a hundred times, but you guys bring a whole other level of excitement. I wish you much success. I really need to get some swag from you guys--and I NEVER do that. We are so emotionally connected to this music because that was all we had. This song took Rush from devoted cult following to superstars overnight. It was a huge freaking song for them. No band, ever. Rush is the single most underrated band in history. I'm a musician, and I've NEVER seen 3 guys who were all easily in the top 10 if not top 5 in the world at what they do. There is no better drummer than Neil, and the only writer that comes close is Roger Waters. Geddy playing bass + keys + vocals? That's off the charts insanely hard. As someone who plays guitar and sings, I don't know how he does it all. And Alex is easily a top 10 guitarist. His riffs are ALWAYS different... and yet you still know it's him when you hear it.

Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s. The Toronto-based station CFNY-FM-which had not abandoned free-form programming-is cited as an inspiration for the song, It's brilliant the transitions, is like changing the radio dial.

Of course I begged my mother to go, I was allowed to go and the rest is history they became my favorite band instantly. It was the Permanent Waves tour with Spirit of Radio just blowing me away. RIP Neil Elwood Peart (1952 - 2020). The Spirit of Radio is arguably the most quintessential RUSH track. It is everything RUSH wrapped in a radio-friendly package. And it summarizes RUSH's genius: complexity and creativity that is so easy (and fun) to digest. But if I had to pick my favourite RUSH track, and one that I humbly believe summed up Neil's life philosophy (in a poetic and dramatic way), it would be Hemispheres (Cygnus X-1 Book Two). Lyrically and musically 100% RUSH: "The heart and mind united in a single perfect sphere." It's something I recommend you guys should experience and react to in memory of The Professor.

Rush wrote this song, "The Spirit of Radio," for a Toronto, Ontario, Canada, radio station, called, CFNY 102.1, their tag line was "102.1, the Spirit of Radio." It was a great station, that played new wave, rock, progressive, and broke new bands. This song is about that station. I used to love it, listened all the time, 70's and 80's. No play lists, they were "free form." Never a "commercial, playing the hits only," Station! CFNY had the "integrity" to play the new and the good. "Subdivisions" is good too.

The song is written to mimic 'travelling the dial' on an old-time car radio, thus the drastically different styles. The lead is along the lines of the static you get between stations. And, yes, they are the high lords of transitions.

Yes! On paper, transitioning from skull-crushing power chords to a light reggae section would sound silly, yet they bring it off wonderfully.

The best line in the song to me is co-opted from Paul Simon's lyric in The Sound of Silence: "and the words of the prophets are written on the subway wall - tenement hall, and they echo with the sound of silence." Peart revised those lines into: "For the words of the *profits* are written on the studio wall- concert hall and they echo with the sound of salesmen."

Oddly enough, Neil was probably one of the most vocal critics of his own lyrics. He definitely did not consider himself to be a writer of the ages, but then again, epic titans of talent often seem to think like that. Neil did write a few hilarious ones though (but I will always admire his genius anyway).

As a 61-year-old male I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to see so many younger people appreciate all the fantastic music from the 60s & 70s (& early 80's). Specifically I most enjoy your reactions to my favorite band of all time...RUSH! My girlfriend turned me on to them in the Summer of 1974 immediately after the US release of their self-titled debut. The INSTANT the needle hit the vinyl I was hooked for life at the age of 14. The first time I saw them was on their All The World's. a Stage tour in January 1977. I was front row center with arms on the stage. There were no stage space/security barricades in the 70's & all arena shows were General Admission/ Festival Seating. You arrive hours early then run for your life when the doors open. To see my heroes play 2112 essentially just for me was incredible. I was 16 and attended solo. I could reach out and touch the band members (of course no one did).To this day (45 years later) the best concert experience of my life. And I saw 100's of bands front row. I also saw them in February 1980 on the Permanent Waves tour.. IMHO they are the greatest band of all time. When one factors in ALL of their contributions and attributes it is startling. Their musicianship is unmatched.

I enjoyed watching your reaction today. I saw Rush the first time in 1975, my freshman year in college. Yea, I'm old, 65 years old. I continued to attend several more Rush concerts through the decades. It amazes me that 45 years later, Rush is still relevant. Toward the end of their playing years, the concerts were filled with hard core Rush fans and became fanatical as most people knew that Neil Peart was playing in extreme pain and the end was near for the band. Some of the wildest shows I have ever seen. I still listen to them on a regular basis, and it's great to see younger people appreciate this band. RIP Neil Peart, you rocked me throughout my life.

You guys are hilarious! I was a teen when this song came out. It's one of my all-time favorite RUSH songs ever. Hearing you say "When we're in our 40's..." I legit laughed. Like I said it came out in my teens, I'm in my 50's and have the same reaction to the song now as I did then, and Neil Peart is the reason I picked up sticks..... Seeing you as college students talking how you'll play it for your kids... I got my son into RUSH as a kid. He's now 20, and he happens to play drums now too.... THIS song and in fact MOST RUSH songs are timeless....

That’s exactly what it is. The Jamaican breakdown is symbolic of changing the stations on the radio (not to mention the smoke influence)and getting that first good song of the day that sticks with you. It’s NEILS tribute to good radio and the trappings of success in it. Poetry, loud poetry.
