Before I really ever listened to metal and rock, I primarily listened to rap. I grew listening to Tupac, NWA, Dr Dre, Ice Cube and the like. After they kinda stepped away from the spotlight, rap just wasn’t as good to me. Themes changed and it was less about life and more so about things I couldn’t relate to like money and drugs. Then a friend of mine, who was a big metalhead, recommend some bands for me and it was like I was in love with music again. I still listen to rap today, but rock/metal made me want to learn an instrument and I could finally relate to music again.

@Nate ever heard him play the buddy rich memorial concert? He does not get the concept of syncopation, and it sounded so far from jazz it was almost comical. Yes, he is a brilliant drummer, but he lacks versatility. I personally cannot get any thrill from his drumming, as it has no feel when it all sounds the same. This is coming from a grade 8 drummer fyi.
Let it be known now that RUSH is the only band who's label actively supported this channel and community with something to give us the fans of their music. That's the TRUE SIGN that they practiced what they preached. RIP Neil Peart. Thank you Geddy and Alex and their label for staying true to your fans until the day this ride came to an end. Glittering prizes and endless compromises indeed can shatter the illusion of integrity but no one will EVER, I MEAN EVER question the integrity of RUSH.

Not just Geddy cuz I'm a bassist but ALL THREE ( THATS the mind fk 3 guys 1 big sound) the only band in my life that made me RUN home from school & grab my bass. Their influence made my life better, ive become quite the bassist & respected musician but a better man & human being. I can never repay the debt of gratitude I owe them & they don't even know I exist. Wow that's so heavy man.

Yes. Man, I tell ya. If you do 2112 you will never be the same. ;) The drummer also writes the lyrics. He's called the professor because he's so smart. He's read many many books. Was a nerd. List his wife to cancer, and then his daughter to a car wreck. It was thought he wasn't going to rejoin the band for awhile, but he did. He took a motor cycle and travelled all over Canada, The US and Central and South America. He made it as far as Columbia I believe it was. Another interesting note. When playing live, the bass pkayer also plays the keyboards. There are only 3 people in the band, so many times the bass olayer is singing, playing keyboards, bass, and a foot controlled bass. Amazingly talented bunch of guys. Just Amazing.

Tim Smallwood I hated Rush growing up because I couldn’t get past his voice. As I’ve gotten older, I love them. I genuinely believe that they are a band that can play over your head considering every reason I have heard to dislike them. As you learn to listen to a song as a whole, you can appreciate almost anything with any degree of heart. I missed out because I paid to much attention to only the vocals and didn’t realize that every member of this band gives each other depth which makes the vocals awesome as well as everything else. I do maintain that this is one of the most underrated guitar players along with David Gilmore.

Rush is amazing by any standard, but when you think about the fact they're a 3 man band it's truly mind-blowing. I feel like you'll need to watch them play live to truly appreciate the talent of Rush. Actually watching Geddy Lee play bass with his left hand, keyboards with his right hand, and singing at the same time while Alex Lifeson alternates between necks on a 2 or 3 neck guitar, while Neil Peart goes ham on drums and percussion truly opens your eyes to their talent.

Second the suggestion of the live version from ‘70. Deep Purple are like Rush in that it’s a band of virtuosos locked in the almighty groove. The drummer, guitarist, and organist are in almost every rock fan’s “top ten ever” list on their instruments, but the vocals on this specific cut are absolutely genre-defining. No “Child In Time,” no Judas Priest or Iron Maiden, no kidding.

There's an additional layer to this song about the loss of integrity over time in music. There's a straight homage and play on Simon & Garfunkel. From Sound of Silence: "And the words of the prophet were written on the subway wall, and tenement hall, and echoed the sound of silence." During the reggae part here: "And the words of the profits were written on the studio wall, concert hall, and echoed the sound of salesmen." Maybe the most genius thing buried in the track.

Lol you talk about the universal appeal of Rush. I remember back in the day, when my son was a toddler, I was driving the family somewhere in my god forsaken minivan, and my son was starting to become fussy. My wife put in a CD of some kids garbage music..the wiggles or some kind of crap. My kid just completely comes unglued. I too was wondering if I opened the door and jumped out at 70mph, that maybe it'd kill me quickly enough not to hear that garbage anymore. Finally I was done, I ejected that CD and tossed it somewhere in the van, and popped in my Rush CD. This song came on, before the lyrics started, my sun got quieter. Then the groove really got in, and he starts smiling and cooing. I looked at my wife and said 'now THAT's my son!!' lol never played that kid crap in the car again. haha. My son is 15 now, still loves Rush.

I personally prefer the remake by Helloween. It takes the original and just makes it more metal.
Imagine what this sounded like to my small-town, seventeen-year-old years in 1980. Thanks for your show, guys. Makes me happy to see your joy and hear your appreciation!
All of the transitions in the tune are meant to be fun but are meant to feel like flipping radio stations. This song is an experience.

I love how excited you guys get listening to my hometown boys. I grew up with Rush, they've sort of always been playing in the background of my life, so I sometimes forget what a magical experience it is to listen to them, and take their incredible musicianship for granted. Thanks for the reminder!
RIP Neal Peart.. greatest of all time

Anne R very true. Other modern bands use them more such as Dream Theater but to me Rush disguises them so much better, somehow it flows better and sounds more natural.

The transitions are reflective of the 'spirit of radio', meaning it's supposed to feel as though the listener is turning the radio dial...

You guys were praising the lyrics - well that's down to the Drummer! Neil Peart is one of the greatest Drummer's of alltime, and has gotten a lot of credit as such, BUT he never seemed to ever have gotten the credit he deserved as one of the great lyricists. Geddy sings, as well as plays Bass, and also works the keyboards. And as for Alex Lifeson, he is strangely one of Rock's alltime most underrated Guitarists. The man can really shred the Guitar!!! These three men are extraordinary Musicians. They're more than just Rockers, but musical geniuses. Living legends.

Yeah, I mean...Neil and Geddy both changed the way people approach their respective instruments. I don't think we can say that about Alex, but it's safe to say that you can't keep up with Neil and Geddy for all those decades unless you are a seriously kickass musician.

So I’ve never seen these videos before but man I love your reactions. I’ve been listening to rush for years and this just brings me back to when I heard it the first time. Like dayummmm!!!!
Love the looks on you guys face as you are processing what you hear. You look so blown away on so many of these video's. You guys are great.
The whole "happy-jovial" thing was on purpose since the song is supposed to remind the listener of the kind of joy they experience when they "Begin the day with a friendly voice - a companion unobtrusive; Plays that song that's so elusive and the magic music makes your morning mood". In other words, when we hear a great song on the radio during our morning commute and it makes our day. So the chord progression/melody follows suit to give the song a happy vibe. Rush knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they were writing this song, and they are masters of piecing together seemingly unattachable pieces of music. Give them some time and they can work a groove out of the most diverse scraps of music you can think of. Amazing talent. The more you listen deeply into their music, the more you'll hear the genius. In the reggae part of this song, Rush borrowed and altered Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence" lyrics: "For the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls. And whispered in the sound of silence". They became: "For the words of the prophets are written on the studio walls, and concert halls! (Cheering is heard) And it echoes with the sound of salesmen - of salesmen - oooooh Salesmen!" This speaks cynically of how radio has become less about playing music and more about trying to make money. Anyway, love your reviews guys - keep 'em coming!

'Genius' is a good descriptor, and for much of what Rush did. This song gives a hug to all of us listeners while giving 'the finger' to music execs. It also marks the beginning of their becoming more mainstream (1981) and IMO is why they were held out of the RRHOF as long as they were.
"It's like a magical happiness" - RUSH in a nutshell :D
I loved watching you two get blown away listening to Rush. I love your show. Keep it up!!!
