I don't think you can overstate how important Ian Paice's drumming is to this recording. He drives the song in a groove so deep that his Range Rover could get stuck in it. What's different about this song is not so much the blues influence as jazz...Paice makes the song swing. One of the most underappreciated drummers of his time.

All of the performances on "Made In Japan" make the preceding studio album versions sound like demos. And that is especially true of the songs that originally appeared on "Machine Head," an album that was recorded in hallways of the Grand Hotel in Montreux, Switzerland in the dead of winter. You are therefore duty-bound now to experience the "Made In Japan" performances of "Lazy" kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZZWqzdKGe7i6kag.html and "Highway Star" kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZXiTrM2ldt2teqQ.html at the very least. @@radar0412 But Andy & Alex DID react to "Child In Time" off "Made In Japan" early on, so I'm still hopeful. I'm thinking they tend to discount live performances because live albums by contemporary recording artists are few and far between, in my opinion because so few bands can pull it off live without their sound being substantially augmented by back-up tracks and electronic trickery. Back in the day, bands were judged by their ability to do their high wire fire acts live without a net: Improvising solos and taking their music, and audiences, to another level entirely.

Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends. I saw ELP twice, on the same tour. The first time at what was then called Capitol Center in DC, the second at a big festival at Charlotte Motor Speedway. This was like the day Nixon resigned. I was probably the only person out of roughly 200,000 not on anything and they did the Spinning Piano - otherwise I would think I was hallucinating. But the spinning piano is now on KZread. Because I’d seen them earlier in the tour and they hadn’t done it and I hadn’t heard about it, it was completely unexpected. If you don’t know what I’m talking about: Keith Emerson is playing a concert grand piano next to a wall. In this case it was a really difficult Chopin Etude, which is not what I’ve seen video of. He’s strapped onto his seat, which I don’t notice. There’s a steel pole about the diameter of a telephone pole sticking out of the wall attached to the center of the bottom of the piano. Suddenly the piano - and the bench with Emerson on it - start slowly rising, like the whole assembly is levitating. It goes quite high. When it gets really high, the keyboard end with Emerson starts rising and the far end starts dipping. This continues until the entire piano is vertical with Emerson above it, but it keeps going so Emerson is now upside down. Now it accelerates and this concert grand piano is spinning end over end. Eventually it slows down and stops and descends. Emerson never stops playing the etude. Nor is he obviously missing notes. From interviews I’ve read, they didn’t switch to tape. The playing was real. The Allman Brothers, during the Chuck Leavell period after the losses of Duane and Berry Oakley, tried to follow that, with rather slow material and a long drum solo. The audience wasn’t having it and started streaming for the exits, keeping in mind this was the Allmans and this was a Southern audience. Greg says into the mic “Y’all don’t have to leave yet, I’ll write you a note.” They got to better material and Leavell in particular cooked. To give you an idea of the period, we parked in the parking lot and were in a tent trailer. The gates suddenly opened and we had to move because it was festival seating. I didn’t have time to take the trailer down and I didn’t even have a key to lock it. The concert ends, we get back to the trailer, and it is completely untouched.
