THIS was the beginning of All METAL music!!!
It's not about the words. You feel this song. Incredible bass line.
Guys this is VERY early Deep Purple. This song wasn't even written by them. It was written by Joe South and originally released by Billy Joe Royal in 1967. Deep Purple released this cover of Hush in 1968. This incarnation of Deep Purple is different from the line up you're used to. Jon Lord and Richie Blackmore are the same, but this line up had Bobby Woodman on drums and Nick Simper on bass. Rod Evans was the singer. Ian Gillan didn't come till later. As I said, this is VERY early Deep Purple.
@andrewsingh7860

Not Bobby Woodman on drums but Ian Paice, the original and only drummer Deep Purple have ever had, from forming in 1968 to breakup in 1976 and since reforming in 1984. He's the only original member still in the band to this very day.

One thing about these older songs. Remember, this was the beginning...people had never heard anything this this, or the doors, Rolling Stones.. and many others. ...this was like wow! Different perspective. It was 1968

I’m a Georgia boy (69 years young!) & this song was written by another Georgia boy, Joe South. He wrote his own and others hits such as Games People Play, Walk a Mile in my Shoes, Down in the Boondocks. He also played guitar and was one of the first artists to use sitar in a song (Games People Play-great song!).

I love this choice. "Hush" is like a semi-forgotten classic. I remember hearing it a lot as a kid, and I hardly ever hear it nowadays, probably because it predates the "classic" Deep Purple lineup. The simplistic lyrics were pretty typical of that time period, and I don't think some complex, philosophical Bob Dylan-esque poetry would have worked in this context. This song is more about the melding of two monster hooks (the "na na na" and the "hush hush" parts) and the overall groove and feel.

Being a teen during the 70s was a trip in itself.... Thanks guys
I can see your point about the lyrics, but to put them in context: (A), this was Deep Purple's debut album, and that kind of lyrical styling was still pretty common in 1968... and (B), this was actually their cover version of a song written a year earlier by an American composer (Joe South) for pop-and-country singer Billy Joe Royal, and that kind of simple "moon-june-soon" rhyming was *very* common in American pop and country back then.

Hey guys, glad you enjoyed this classic! This is a cover by Deep Purple orginally written by Joe South. In the 60s the lyrics were pretty simple and most songs were short, there are exceptions. If you like this, you might want to check out two Spencer Davis Group songs: Gimme Some Lovin. and I'm a Man. The lead singer was Steve Winwood, then in his teens, who went onto Blind Faith, Traffic, and then solo. For that material the cool stuff is organ and vocals. They didn't have a guitarist anywhere near the level of Deep Purple's Richie Blackmoor. Spencer Davis Group is also sixties, not seventies. Excellent choice on Hush. Someone gave you good advice

The simplicity of the lyrics adds to the timelessness of the song. What is important is the driving, unique rhythm and the master-class in overall musicianship. It's just a banger... don't over-think it. :-D
Awesome song, Can you Imagine hearing this for the first time in the late 60`s. Deep purple was way ahead of its time . No group sounded as Deep Purple. Lot of bands wrote the lyrics on the run as they was in studio. I like lyrics that rhymed. Great guitarist in this band. A + for any song back then is great . Mixing was good. Recording Equipment wasn't near good as it is today but yet they still made it sound great. They really knew how to get the best out of what they had back then .

This was my first summer out of high school. OMG this brings back memories!! The lyrics were perfect for high school. It is a great song that I love fifty freaking years later.
This is my all time favorite Deep Purple song. The groove is everything. I love how they start with the hook. The keyboard (Hammond) is done by the bass player, Jon Lord. Classically trained, he spearheaded a performance with the Royal Philharmonic very early on in the Deep Purple timeline. It was groundbreaking. Metallica and many others have done it since, but at the time, it was unheard of, especially for such a heavy band.

Love your channel! The era was 1968. At that time I was 12 . Sure, the lyrics were lackluster. What nailed me lyrically at that time were coming the Beatle's Sgt. Pepper and the Doors first album, etc. What got me with Hush was the energy and intensity of the primal rhythm. You guys are so spot on by putting importance upon the era in all your reactions. Keep it going.

Deep Purple didn't write the lyrics. But did a remake into a rock version, which was included on their Album in 1977. The song was written by Joe South and originally performed by country singer Billy Joe Royal in 1967. The song was actually about a guy that was crazy in love. Hence the verse: "I got a certain little girl she's on my mind No doubt about it she looks so fine She's the best girl that I ever had Sometimes she's gonna make me feel so bad. Na na na na na na, Na na na na na na. Hush, hush, I thought I heard her calling my name now. Hush, hush, She broke my heart but I love her just the same now, Hush, hush A lot of poetry has been written like that.
Gold standard for reaction videos. Clear purpose of hitting a certain genre and thus infiltrating a "world",, ( insiders welcoming outsiders, it's been used in fiction so much, ET, some caveman gets unthawed), consistent clear format , your appearances on camera are consistent due to being yourselves, your minds and personality are the top key element alongside the song and our empathy reactions to your reactions. And the reactions are consistent and trusted and valued. The fact your visibly wearing the cans is v important.. and now you've got the room sorted out I think you nailed the whole package for going forward. Hope you sell many tees.
Hush was 1 of their debute songs. #Woman From Tokyo is the song all hair metal bands have tried to emulate 👍💥💥🔥🔥

This starts with a strong groove, that is in the same vein of excitement as the rhythm of Gimme Some Lovin' by The Spencer Davis Group. It's a helluva a lot chunkier though. Has Hush ever been used in a movie soundtrack? Gimme Some Lovin' is certainly popular for that.

This is the song that caught my 13 year old attention in 1968. It took me a while to even find out who did it. (Probably finally saw it on a jukebox.) I loved it even though I only heard it on a Ford Mustang AM car radio, in mono. Then on a gas station/diner jukebox. So I had no idea it rocked that hard, until I played it on my 800w home theater in surround sound. A world of difference.
Written by Joe South. Talented song writer, singer, guitarist with many of his own hit songs. RIP

This song featured Deep Purple original vocalist Rod Evans. Rod was eventually let go in favor of Ian Gillan. Purple wanted a harder sound and they didn't think Rod was up to the task. Still LOVE this tune it is one of my favorite Deep Purple tunes.
This song went to #1 on the US charts in 1969/70. It was wildly popular for a long time. Anthem type of chorus. This song is really great to see live. Lots of cover bands like this song. Every time I see a band cover it, the crowd gets into big time.

Ok, fun facts time: This was written by Joe South and was first recorded by the country singer Billy Joe Royal in 1967. Joe South was a prominent session musician and songwriter; some of his other compositions include "Games People Play" and "Rose Garden".South also wrote "Down In The Boondocks" for Royal, which was a #9 hit in the U.S. in 1965. After Royal released his version, "Hush" was quickly recorded by many artists in a variety of styles. The song is about a guy who is so crazy in love that he'll drop everything if he thinks she might be calling his name. Royal's recording has a definite country feel, while Deep Purple used a heavy rock sound. Other artists to record the song include Jimmy Frey, The Rubes, Killdozer, Dan Baird, Gotthard, and Thin Lizzy. Kula Shaker had the biggest U.K. hit with their cover going to #2 in 1997. Joe South adapted the song from an old African-American spiritual, which included the line: "Hush I thought I heard Jesus calling my name". It was Rod Freeman, a cohort of producer Joe Meek, who taught Deep Purple this song. Keyboardist Jon Lord recalled to Mojo magazine January 2009: "Initially we thought it was a bit too disco, or whatever the word was then. But Ritchie (Blackmore) said it would work if we toughened it up a bit". This song has been in the following films: Apollo 11 (1996), Isn't She Great (2000), Beyond the Sea (2004), Children of Men (2006). The U.K. Charlatans lifted the organ riff on their 1990 U.K. hit "The Only One I Know" from this song. This was not a hit in Deep Purple's native U.K., though a re-recording made to celebrate their 20th anniversary reached a measly #62 in 1988. In 1997 British band Kula Shaker's cover of this song peaked at #2 in the U.K., bettering Deep Purple's chart position by 60 places. Kula Shaker's version was featured in the 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer. Jon Lord said (in Mojo magazine): "The whacka thing on the organ was something I started doing in (his previous band) The Artwoods. I played it almost like a set of conga drums. The rhythm of Hush is like a samba." The Deep Purple version was included on their first album and recorded with the band's original lineup, which didn't include lead singer Ian Gillan, who joined in 1969, replacing Rod Evans. The song is a fan favorite, but Gillan kept it off the setlists when he was in the band, since he wasn't the original singer. When Steve Morse joined Deep Purple on guitar in 1994, he pushed to bring the song back to their live shows, which they did. "We have a big improv section in their and it's just a great feel from beginning to end for me," Morse said in a 2014 interview. "And the lyrics are not even lyrics. It's just 'Na nana na na na nananana." It's the most basic tune in the world, but to me Deep Purple got on the map as a hard rock band from doing that version of 'Hush'. So I love that. And we stretch that out pretty far live." In the U.S., this was released on Tetragrammaton Records, which was co-owned by Bill Cosby. And now you know.
The look of marvel and disbelief on the dude in the left during the organ riff says it all .
Great band, takes me back when I was a teenager. Check out Ten Years After with their iconic song I’d love to change the world.

Most famous song does not always translate into the best song. Think about it, hit songs are often predetermined by either the recording label or the producer pushing the label executive. Then said songs are generally released as singles and then fast tracked to the radio stations or turned into a video. Thus said songs become commercially popular hits. Of which by definition are called pop hits or pop music. When artists are interviewed, it is common to find many preferred their less commercial songs as personal favorites.

I was blessed with a musical family. My Grandfather was a trumpet player, who’s parents owned vaudeville playhouses and he is a famous artist. My father listened to big band and jazz/blues. My mom 11 yrs younger then my dad, 40/50’s dance music. My oldest sister dove face first into hard rock, my middle sister was into pop radio. Me the youngest got it alll... plus I added new wave and punk.... ps my great great (greats) grandfather is Francis Scott Key.... so there you have it!
Fun Fact: In the early days a reporter joined the band on the tour bus to do an interview. He asked them how they wrote songs. At that point the lead guitar player picked up his axe,and started a riff. then the singer started singing some lyrics. Buy the time they reached the venue the song was completed. They called it Highway star and performed it that night. Cool or what?
