Helene here: As they say, the bench was SO DEEP with quality music back then....dozens of outstanding bands. We were very spoiled and didn’t know it, because that’s just the way music was: talented musicians, wonderful songwriters. Soul Train Bro (another great reactor) has described this period as a music “Renaissance” in that the was such a rich community of artists, especially in Britain and L.A. They knew one another, they wrote songs for one another, they played on each other’s albums, they hung out together. So there was allot of cross-fertilization and ideas shared. HUGE bands like Zeppelin, the Eagles, Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Purple, Sabbath, The Doors, the singer/songwriter movement of L.A. (James Taylor, Jackson Browne, CSNY, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt,) the whole Laurel Canyon scene.....It was all going on at the same time. Can you dig it, Chod? And then a little later in the seventies came Peter Frampton, Boston, Foreigner, Heart, Jethro Tull, Rush, Supertramp, Genesis......I mean the list goes on and on. To rise above such a talented “bench”, you had to have superlative musicianship, charisma, a special “hook” or way to stand out above the crowd. You had to be able to deliver live because there weren’t all the tricks back then that there are now. . I think you are just beginning to understand that. So when you read that Zeppelin “strode above them all like a behemoth” in the seventies, you truly understand what a feat that was. I love watching you on this journey because you have the background to truly appreciate and respect the music....you’re not just listening and then going “wow” and that’s it. I’m so done with that. I want reactors who understand the music. Thank you for your channel, Chod. You’re doing a GREAT job with it. And a shout-out to your other subs.....You are getting GREAT suggestions!

I would also add that back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, we as kids and young adults didn't have as many of the today's distractions. We had 3-5 TV channels, no home video gaming, internet, etc. More kids were in band, playing piano, and taking music lessons. Big band artists were still around, and the new rock and roll craze (Elvis, Buddy Holly, Beatles, etc) fueled a ton of kids to start playing an instrument. They had music and more time to play, experiment, and hone their skills in garage and local bands. Excellence fueled more excellence. And the studios allowed groups the release to this experimental new music.

Deep Purple was one of the Rock Super -Groups. Blackmore one of the best guitarists (top 10) & Lord was one of the top keyboardists. The vocalists were top tier too. Check out "Smoke on The Water", "Lazy", "Child in Time" just to name a few. You might not be ready yet... but Rick Wakeman (of Yes) would be on most people's shortlist of GOAT keys.

More Deep Purple: "Smoke on the Water" for sure. More face-melting organ: "Chest Fever," the Band. (Look, when you backed Bob Dylan you get to just call yourselves 'The Band' if you want.) Some of the most ridiculous key work you will ever hear: Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Start with "Trilogy" or "The Endless Enigma" (all three parts, totaling around 10 minutes) for a good taste of what they can do, and then duck over to "Tarkus" or "Karn Evil 9" for the full epic prog sauce.

Yes we were blessed with the music from the 50's, 60's and 70's. I was fortunate to have worked with Edie Money, Doug and Stu from CCR, Lydia Pense, Elvin Bishop, The Diamonds, among others. All were great people and so down to earth. I have not heard anyone do a reaction to Elvin Bishop. His newest release a few years ago was Ace in the Hole which he sent me several cd's prior to its release. You should really check him out. And yes the B12 has a sound all its own and of all the organs the B12 can't be beat. Keep rock'n dude you haven't even left the station yet.lols I grew up on the 50, 60 and 70's music and still faithfully listen to it all the time. Music today just doesn't come close to good ole rock n roll. Please check out some Elvin Bishop.

We all have our favorite players in this band (usually centers around what instrument we play). As a B-3 player myself, I’m so glad you honed in on Jon Lord. Obviously the whole band contributed, and the rhythm section was particularly important, but leading the charge was Jon Lord playing organ like a rhythm instrument. This song in so many ways was about the organ. First time I heard that solo at age 15, I just about fell on the floor. I thought it was part gospel part blues. I didn’t know what to think. As it turned out, it was just very good rock. I said to myself, how do I make my parents’ piano in the living room sound like that. The answer was I couldn’t, so went my quest to learn as much about the Hammond Organ as I could. Yes it’s sad he died relatively young. It was cancer. I remember the day he died. The CBS Radio Network led with his death at the 12pm Network Broadcast, Pacific time that day. They opened with the first organ chords after the wolf howls. I will never forget how cool I thought that was. Thanks for listening to one of my all time favorite songs, and sharing your thoughts.

I urge you to listen to “Highway Star“ off of the album titled “Made in Japan“. Live album. That and “lazy“ off the same album. “Child in Time” is often the first song people react to. Great live video of that, studio version also excellent. “Smoke on the water” is their most famous song. You definitely know the guitar riff but maybe haven’t heard the whole song. For that I recommend the version off of “Made in Japan“ just to get a bit more energy.

Sir, you are worthy of my Deep Purple story... My Deep Purple story It was the summer of 1989 and I was 13. My friends were all into the big 80s pop, hair metal, etc., so I was into that scene, too. I didn't know I had a choice. I didn't know what else existed, to be honest. One day, my ex-stepfather (who was only very briefly in my life) was doing something in the garage, jamming to some music. Bored, I wandered in and asked what band he was listening to. He was incredulous that I was unfamiliar with the song that was playing. So, he sat me down on the concrete garage floor (felt cool on a hot day), put gigantic headphones over my ears and fired up his 8-track player. From the opening second of Deep Purple's _Burn,_ I was hooked. Out poured the most powerful, transformative sounds I'd ever heard. The experience literally transfixed me. I had never heard anything like it, and it was magical. I ended up listening to the entire 8-track in one session, without ever getting up from that concrete floor. Through every lineup and stylistic change, I've been happily hooked on Deep Purple ever since. Lord played the organ like a bongo drum. The song was written by Joe South.

John Lord composed some truly great Classical Music works. If you like classical music you should check out his Sarabande album for some awesome orchestral music. He also performed with the group Whitesnake.

Some other good organ is Evil Woman by Spooky Tooth, the long version of Light My Fire (it's literally hypnotic) and When the Music's Over, both by the Doors.

That great wolf helped kick off DP's career, and Blackmore's brief solos sound pretty lupine too. Lord's solo still sounds boiler-room hot.

In answer to your question, everything was just great. It was all of them trying for art, instead of money, because they could make a living from it if they worked, with real instruments, instead of computers and marketers. It was competition to do better than the others. Radio played everything that was worth anything, and even a lot that was not worth much, because there was total musical freedom to explore and excel, and formats were loose, because there were always listeners and deejays trying to see what was what, beyond the corporate control boxes.

Don’t even think about not playin “Woman from Tok-a-yo! Wicked good! You will die with regret if you don’t hear this song. Saw them and John Lord played that organ and bumped it and tipped and pushed it around the stage. He abused that great instrument and it sounded soo F”in good! RIP John Lord. Ritchie Blackmore on guitar. Listen to Woman from Tok-A-Yo. Like your life depends on it. You can thank me later.😎

Part of the reason, that there was so much great music, is because the world was messed up then, too; and yet, they could express it better than today; because, there was not as much corp censorship as now.

"Child In Time" by them is one of the best songs ever... Live even more impressive. If you find this at least good than "Child in Time" is a must listen. Edit: After listen to "Child in Time" you will be more sad that John Lord died... he was the best in my opinion, what a genius.

First, that was a great reaction. You made me laugh numerous times. Love how you identified Mr. Lord. And it’s great that you started with this song because chronologically it was the earliest hit so you will simply move forward in time with them if you do more reactions. One thing I can tell you is that almost for sure you will hear a different singer with them next time. You could hear more from this singer but as far as their more well-known, famous songs almost for sure you will get a different singer. Just a little warning. And then there’s actually different singers with them after the most likely next singer you will hear. All excellent, in my opinion. They are actually still together so they are a band who has been together over 50 years.
