And my siblings were older than me by 7, 8, 10, 13 and 14 years older than me and they had so many albums of different genres, Deep Purple was one of many in the Rock collection. One of my all-time favorites! An instrumental arrangement was regularly performed by my high school Pep Band during basketball games at warm up and half time along with other popular rock arrangements. This was back in the 80s but it had been played at the games by the Pep Band at my high school since the early 70s. It was a crowd favorite. One day, our band instructor played a tape of the original Deep Purple studio version of the song and our minds were blown! The hard driving bass and drums, the crazy organ, the bluesy vocals. We wanted that version played at the games instead!

What a great song. I totally remember it, but I had no idea it was Deep Purple. How could that be, 60's British Rock is my favorite time, and I'm a Deep Purple fan. I am humbled, thank you for informing me! By the way Chod, I DID see Deep Purple live in concert w/ZZ top in the early 70's. It was awesome and I can assure you NO ONE was crowd surfing - everyone was too stoned - they would have dropped you-LOL. Yes, my generation was lucky to see all these great bands live and in their prime. We were in our prime then, too. The only down side is that we are now all OLD! However, you are as old as you feel, and some of us old hippies are still rocking it! BYW- you did it again. You said DP was in the top 10 list of your favorite bands. Is this a mental list, or have you actually named your top 10? I looked it up, and the last time I see you named your to 10 was 9 months ago. You have listened to probably a hundred bands since then. I am VERY curious who would be your favorites now??? Think about it and do tell, please.....

Shield tune about life-changing times. I Saw Deep Purple 3 times in the late1960s, and early 70s. Uriah Heep's the only band that ever outplayed them at same concert. @@sitbone3 I believe it. Hendrix saw them in LA probably the same night. It may have been another show but it was when Purple came to on their first American Trip. I can't remember if Cream stopped letting them warm them up after 3 or 5 shows. Jimmy invited them to his house and Purple partied with Hendrix. Hendrix called Ritchie Mr. Speed. It was the same house Sharon Tate was murdered by the Manson Family about six months or so after. Jon Lord jammed with Hendrix in New York a couple of nights. Jimmy told Jon that their guitarist was something special. Clapton got very upset when his Manager brought Jimmy to Jam with Cream and Clapton told the Manager that you told me he was good but not that good. Jimmy was for sure a show stealer. The way I look at it that Clapton had seen the two best guitarist and performers that had ever performed on Stage. And Eriic knew it. At that time in Ritchie's Career he wanted to blow the other guys away. It was his attitude.

In the '60's very few artists held the copyright to their own compositions. They were controlled by the record labels and publishing companies. Members of The Beatles did not recieve a penny for the songs they wrote before the creation of Apple Corp. John Fogerty in particular had to pay copyright loyalties to the Creedence Clearwater Revival songs he wrote when he performed them as a solo artist.

This is my favorite Deep Purple song. What a tremendous recording. Jon Lord . . . Wow! Joe South wrote this song, as well as "Down in the Boondocks", "Games People Play", "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden", "Walk a Mile in my Shoes", and "Don't it Make you Want to go Home". A true talent, but hardly anyone knows his name anymore. South may have wrote "Hush", but musically, Deep Purple owns it, just like Lynn Anderson owns "Rose Garden". The longevity of rock music is amazing. Deep Purple recorded this song in 1968, that's 54 years ago. The song is still listened to, reacted to, and appreciated in 2022. Back up to 1968. 54 years earlier it was 1914. That's two years after the Titanic sank and its the year Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated starting the Great War, which would later became known as World War I. In 1968, people were not fondly remembering the music from that time in history. Rock is special. It will never die.

I grew up in SoCal, born in Glendale & as I turn 64 this year I look back with a whole new perspective thanks to you, & other young folks as they discover "What I was used to growing up": Sly & The Family Stone in '73 (My first live concert for my Bday), FZ & BOC in '74 (Courtesy of my Big Sister & her boyfriend) then after I got my drivers' license & a job I worked to see all the live shows I could afford, and I did. I was matter o' fact truly blessed to be where I was for all of it & many times it is difficult to share as it truly drives me to tears for a bygone age of instrumental virtuosity, being surrounded with access to so much imagination, creativity & artistic risk taking. It was all 'normative', we came to expect something different because it was all pouring out of the airwaves everyday. Thank you for being so candid, take care!

Quite the high tempo for Mr lord's 16th note chords, impressive how tight (relatively) they are.

This song was used to great effect in "Bad Times At The El Royale" a couple of years ago. It played as Chris Hemsworth danced around, shirt open, contemplating murder. Really suspenseful scene. But I've loved the song since it first came out when I was a kid. Saw Deep Purple in concert a little later, in '72, after Ian Gillan had joined as lead singer. And Jon Lord rocked that Hammond organ, literally. Nearly turned it over! Wish you could've seen (& heard) that, Chod. You would've LOVED it!💙☮💙

Rod Evans was the founder of DP, just as Brian Jones was of the Stones. Both got royally screwed! Still love my Glover, Gillan, Lord, and Paice version of the band. Don't have to mention Blackmore because everyone knows he's there. Lol. This was the song I remember played on the radio when I was a very young girl. They threw in some rock on AM radio back then before FM stations came along.

one of my all-time favourite songs, I remember my dad playing this on vinyl, while me and my sister danced. I was maybe 6, we were just packing to move from Toronto so my dad could start his new job. That would've been spring of 1974. The entire album was a piece of art.
