I am grateful that I'm old enough now to have been a teenager in the 80's. It was the best possible time to be alive. It was a vibe that will never be repeated.

Diamond Dave is in a universe of his own making. Look into that dudes life and you will find a world traveler that goes all in on a WIDE variety of 'life adventures', from mountain climbing to jungle excursions, to Japanese sword mastery to solo treks thru deserts for weeks at a time, this man LIVES LIFE. Hands down one of the best showman I have ever seen on stage back in the day, Roth was a master of his craft and a blast to witness.

The whole band were and are rock legends. No one had ever heard or seen anything like them when they hit the scene. Absolutely groundbreaking, game changing music in 1978. The main reason for that is the guitar God, Eddie Van Halen. To truly appreciate this band, you first have to watch Eruption solo, live without a net in 86. It's 13 minutes, but you won't be sorry. Then you just have to dive into this band as a unit in action. Start with the original version with Diamond Dave on vocals and when you have checked out some staples, you can then check out the Sammy Hagar on vocals days, aka Van Hagar. I don't think you will be disappointed either way. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise until you see for yourself.

Van Halen was the party band of the 80s. Eddie Van Halen was a guitar God. He influenced a whole generation plus of rock guitarists. His brother Alex plays drums. And David Lee Roth was the front man of all front men.

From 1978 to 1984 Van Halen were THE rock band. They were a fusion of the Van Halen brothers (guitar & drums) hard rock style with David Lee Roth's (The Crazy singer/frontman) love of Funk & Soul music. Greatest American Hard Rock band IMHO. And...they were an absolutely incredible live act.

I'd call it hard rock, in this case funky hard rock, that had a strong influence on metal then and later. The VH guys called it "heavy rock" and David Lee Roth, the singer, would call their sound 'big rock" in interviews back then.

And thank you for the nice reply. You're a good reactor and a musical soul. Van Halen worked bars and clubs and had to play metal, rock, but also danceable music like funk and disco to get work before they got famous. Also, their singer was dance music obsessed and kept after the Van Halen brothers to keep danceable and what he called "girl friendly" music in with all the heaviness. So, they had a unique hybrid sound. Plus, the Van Halen brothers had a professional jazz musician for a dad, so they could swing far better than most rock bands. Hence, all their music had a real groove like no other.

You might like the song "Unchained," studio version first. VH were known for bigger shows than anyone else. Literally. Seeing them live was always something you tried to do, if you could. I remember the day after they came through Chicago on the 1984 tour -- half the school was wearing the tour t-shirts, ALWAYS an important part of the next day at school following a show. You always wore your new colors. And everyone being into Van Halen just made them even cooler. I might laugh at a girl with a Leif Garrett shirt, and she might disparage my satin Led Zeppelin jacket. But at the end of the day, everyone agrees about VH's undeniable fun factor.

🔥 Edward Van Halen played and developed his own musical style out of logic and necessity- he couldn’t afford all the toys growing up so he improvised. A musical family background certainly was useful. He wasn’t a guitar god or shredder - that wasn’t his goal anyways. He just wanted to create. A legit musical genius that show us another way was possible
