There were only 2 Van Halen brothers in Van Halen, Eddie and Alex (drums, flaming gong). Toward the end of their career, Eddie's son with Valerie Bertinelli, Wolfgang Van Halen, joined the band on bass guitar when David Lee Roth came back. At that point there were 3 Van Halens in the band. Wolfgang has a band now called Mammoth WVH.

Edward 'Eddie' Van Halen was the guitarist who revolutionized guitar playing when Van Halen debuted in 1978 ... he developed playing techniques that defined rock and metal in the 80's... Sadly, he passed away in 2020 from cancer (R.I.P.) Eddie and his older brother Alex Van Halen came to America as kids from the Netherlands and settled in California... their dad was a jazz musician who struggled to make ends meet... The brothers became rock and roll fans and started jamming together - Eddie played drums and Alex played guitar... but they switched when Eddie Van Halen showed more proficiency on guitar. Eddie built his first guitar out of parts of discarded guitars and called it 'Frankenstein'... it was a recognizable design when Van Halen became famous. In the early 70's, Eddie and Alex Van Halen formed a band in school that played under various names... Eddie played guitar and sang, and he would rent a P.A. from a local singer named David Lee Roth to do shows... In 1973, Eddie decided it was cheaper to have David Lee Roth as the band's lead singer so that he could focus on guitar playing. David Lee Roth was not a great live singer, but he had resources (and ideas) like rehearsal space and suggested the band name Van Halen after recognizing Eddie Van Halen's talent on guitar... Van Halen sounded like a marquee name that could attract fans who wanted to see Eddie Van Halen play live... Michael Anthony (bass) joined Van Halen in 1974 - he and Eddie also provided backing vocals when they played. Van Halen became an attraction in the local Pasadena, California scene and graduated to playing L.A. clubs by 1976... Eddie Van Halen was fast becoming a guitar hero in the scene... He had taken piano lessons as a kid, but he played by ear... he developed his playing techniques during those early years and was reluctant to show them to audiences... Gene Simmons of Kiss saw Van Halen play one night in '76 and offered to help them get signed... he helped record their original demos, but no one was willing to give Van Halen a shot. They thought that David Lee Roth was a poor singer. Van Halen was finally signed by 1977 and recorded their debut album... Eddie Van Halen did a warm-up on guitar in the studio, and it was recorded and put on the album as the intro 'Eruption'... it changed guitar playing forever when people heard it on the radio in 1978 w/ the first single 'You really got me' (A cover of The Kinks)... Van Halen opened for Black Sabbath on tour in '78 and was blowing them off the stage every night... David Lee Roth had perfected an acrobatic stage presence w/ splits and jumps and became the band's rock star... Van Halen's debut album sold 10 million copies in the US while Black Sabbath split by 1979. Van Halen quickly became a major rock band by 1980 w/ several multi-platinum albums... but internally, the band was a mix of egos, alcohol and hard partying... David Lee Roth was the band's taskmaster and he could be domineering behind the scenes which wore out the other members by the early 80's... Eddie Van Halen was also incorporating keyboards into Van Halen's music but Roth did not approve. Eddie insisted that a keyboard track (that became their #1 single 'Jump') make the '1984' album and Roth finally gave in and recorded the song... Van Halen's '1984' album sold 10 million copies in the US as MTV promoted the band, but tensions ran high on that tour. In 1985, Van Halen fans were shocked when David Lee Roth parted ways w/ Van Halen... he had recorded a solo EP 'Crazy from the heat' in '85, hoping it would become a movie and that didn't sit well in Van Halen. Considering new singers, Eddie Van Halen was put in contact in '85 w/ veteran singer Sammy Hagar, who had been a singer for 70's rockers Montrose... he went solo in 1976 and built a career for himself by 1982... Sammy Hagar was hesitant but met w/ the band, heard the new music and was impressed... He signed on to be Van Halen's new lead singer in 1986 and recorded the '5150' album that charted at #1 in the US without any MTV support... while David Lee Roth launched a solo career w/ the platinum album "Eat 'em and smile". Van Halen became regarded as 'Van Hagar' between 1986 and 1996, scoring 4 albums at #1 on the US charts... but Eddie Van Halen's struggle w/ sobriety created a rift between him and Hagar by 1995... In 1996, Eddie hired former singer David Lee Roth to record 2 new Van Halen songs and Sammy Hagar felt he was forced out of Van Halen to make way for a reunion w/ Roth... However, David Lee Roth was still at odds w/ Eddie and the 'reunion' of the original Van Halen did not work out. Eddie hired former Extreme singer Gary Cherone for the 'Van Halen III' album in 1998, but fans were not happy w/ the album or the new line-up... and Cherone was out by 2000 as Eddie Van Halen underwent treatment for cancer... Van Halen reunited w/ Sammy Hagar in 2004 for a tour, but Eddie Van Halen was in bad shape from drugs and alcohol and Hagar was unwilling to carry on w/ the band... Bassist Michael Anthony also found himself out of Van Halen. In 2007, Van Halen finally announced a tour w/ David Lee Roth on vocals... Eddie (and Valerie Bertinelli's) son Wolfgang Van Halen would play bass... Van Halen were lucrative on tour, but only produced 1 new studio album in 2012 - 'A different kind of truth'. Van Halen did their final tour in 2015... Eddie Van Halen privately battled cancer again and passed away in 2020, ending any hope of Van Halen making more new music.

Thank you for that history. It was very informative! Although I do remember it, it's hard to believe that Dave and them reunited in 1996. It doesn't seem that long ago. But I remember (was it the MTV Music Awards where they all showed up together as a surprise to announce the reunion?). Also, I seem to remember around 2004, when Ed was in really bad shape, he came out with a solo single called Catherine, for his current wife or girlfriend? Although that was a killer song where he played every instrument, he looked really strung out. I felt so sad for him at that time. So glad he got his life together before he passed. And that he and Sam had a chance to make up and the end.

Van Halen with frontman Diamond Dave were the RULERS OF ROCK! "Unchained" is all about breaking free from the chains that society and conformity try to slap on us, urging us to embrace our individuality, to let loose and live life on our own terms. It's also about finding that close connection with someone that fuels our very soul. It's a reminder to cherish those moments and to hold on tight to what truly matters in this crazy world.

Sammy Haggar was in the band Montrose and had a fantastic solo career (I Can't Drive 55) before he joined Van Halen replacing David Lee Roth who was in this video. Van Halen fans are often split between these 2 versions as to which was the best. To me they were completely different bands as the music style were more "mature" with Haggar. Check out the song "Dreams" which has Haggar on vocals and there is an awesome video that features the Blue Angels.

Hagar was tame, boring ass FM radio commercial studio crap and when Eddie started with the synth stuff VH became damn near unlistenable. Roth was the real thing, but Van Halen as a band, tbh, was never on the level of the greats. They were very good for a very brief time. Eddie brought a very cool and interesting sound to the group.

Probably one of my favorite songs from VH off Fair Warning album. Donna knew a lot. Eddie Van Halen was a great guitarist, especially for improvisation. Alex, his brother, was the drummer, Michael Anthony was bassist and David Lee Roth was their first and original singer, seen here. Sammy Hagar who was in Montrose, went solo and than joined Van Halen, was their second singer. Check out song And the Cradle Will Rock next.

Diamond David Lee Roth was the original Lead Singer for VH, Edward "Eddie" Van Halen on Lead Guitar, Michael Anthony on Bass Guitar and Alex Van Halen, Eddie's brother, on Drums, and Flaming Gong. I saw VH about a year after this video was shot, and the whole event was out of hand. My ears were ringing for three days, daze, afterward. It WAS "Unchained".

Here's some information that might be helpful. Van Halen (originally called Mammoth * More on that later) changed its name to Van Halen at David Lee Roth's suggestion, was active from 1972-2019 (47 years). The lineup is as follows:: Alex van Halen (Drums/percussion) 1972-2019. David Lee Roth (Lead Singer/showman) 1978-1985. Eddie Van Halen (guitars, piano, keyboard) 1972-2019. Michael Anthony (bass guitar) 1974-2005. Sammy Hagar (Lead Singer) 1986-1996. Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie's son - bass guitar) 2007-2019. There were a couple other people but they're not worth mentioning. David Lede Roth went on to have a semi successful solo career, He would return for a brief stint for a couple of songs and later a full album called A Different Kind of Truth. Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar play together now in Sammy's band The Circle also feat. Jason Bonham (drums - son of John Bonham drummer for Led Zepplin). Every October, Sammy throws a birthday party at his place in Cabo Wabo (in Mexico). Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie's son) started a band called Mammoth WVH (I told you we'd come back to this) in a tribute to his dad and uncle. Although he has a band when he plays live, on the first two studio albums Wolfgang plays every instrument and wrote all the lyrics and music. And they are great albums. Simply titled Mammoth WVH and Mammoth II. Check out the videos Don't Back Down (first album) and I'm Alright (second album) and Another Celebration at the End of the World (second album). Language warning FYI. Sadly, Eddie passed away October 6th 2020, from a stroke. He also smoked a lot and had battled cancer previously. Distance from Wolfgang's first album is a tribute to his father and is heart wrenching, but amazing. Sorry, I know that was a lot of information. Hope it helps clear things up.

I’m from Casey County Kentucky but not n raised in Cincinnati n going on 60 n have seen Van Halen 11 times in my 20s n watching them 2 younger girls watch n listen too this video was cool too see them clearly enjoy it. This younger generation has no clue the rock n roll bands they’ve missed out on. I’ve seen Aerosmith 61 times n followed them all around the Midwest starting in 1977 at the age of 13 at Cobo Hall in Detroit n they opened for Kiss, I went with three 17 year olds n yea got in trouble when I got home but was worth it. I hope rock n roll isn’t dying or already dead n pray a band or two are in garages somewhere fixinntoo bust out n rockout

Subscribed. You THREE are hilarious. It's okay to not know what you're talking about when you admit it mid-stream...it's refreshing. THREE Generations of women who don't know much about Van Halen, but can watch and listen and enjoy the experience TOGETHER. That's what this is all about. I'm a Christian man in my early 50's now and I grew up on Van Halen and Motely Crue and Metallica. Just keep listening to music and keep recording your responses, because you are all funny and entertaining in your collective way. God Bless.

Eddie Van Halen is 100% one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Alex Van Halen drummer totally rocks. David Lee Roth, singer, did the splits and does many martial art moves on stage. Michael Anthony on bass is a lot of fun live, good singer too. Sammy Hagar came later as singer. Sammy was a solo artist and before that lead singer for Montrose & still gets on stage in Cabo. Van Halen was a great band, one of the greatest, with many great, fun songs.

I was lucky to grow up in this era! The mighty Van Halen! I saw them in concert twice when Sammy Hagar was the lead singer - 3rd row for one of the concerts. Hagar came in after David Lee Roth went off on his own. Hagar had/has a much stronger voice and they sold a ton of albums with him (when there was still such a thing as albums/CD's). But David Lee Roth was a hell of a showman. He was like a circus performer! Great times! RIP Eddie Van Halen, one of the greats!

I had a huge crush on her also, John! I mentioned in an earlier comment that I saw Van Halen live with Sammy during the "Live Without a Net" tour where Eddie did his now infamous "Live Eruption Solo" (though he did that on every tour). What I didn't say was that before the show, after BTO played and while the roadies were getting Van Halen's stage set, I walked past the sound booth just as Valerie Bertinelli was stepping up to the booth to watch the concert. I nearly brushed arms with her. I nearly fainted LOL! I was 14! As I said in the previous comment, I witnessed greatness watching Eddie, but seeing that beautiful woman sooo up close was like seeing an angel! I can still remember the scent of her perfume. That was 38 years ago and I will never forget that night for many reasons! Edit: Kristy McNichol was also a huge crush I had (Little Foxes). Sally Field in "Smokey and the Bandit", yep! But I have no idea who Lisa Warshel is.... I'll have to look her up.

In fact , I had a crush on the girl who played opposite Blair , the gal who rode motorcycles . Can't remember her name. Anyway, my crush on Lisa was on the Mickey Mouse Show. It didn't last as long and wasn't as big a TV hit as the original from the 50's with Annette Funichello...( she was kinda hot as an adult doing the Skippy peanut butter commercials) . As far as music, Stevie Nick's was soooo sexy, not just physically but her voice! At work we had the radio playin' , when Gold Dust Woman came on I made everyone shut up until the song was over lol

But there is always a few exceptions, ( Stevie Nicks) to name one. Now , take WKRP in Cincinnati, I thought Bailey ( the brown haired office girl) was more attractive than Loni Anderson. But as fate would have it, I dated one of those "bleached blondes" 4 years ago. She was 25 and I was 47. She was one of those women that guys around us would drool at. It was fun for a while but ended badly. And, yes, women were more attractive in the 70's and 80's! Yeah, it's good going back in memories to times when things and people made more sense.
