Haha, I sent this question in! I did not ever hear from her again, but the next New Year I met another woman. We've been together for five years and got married last June. Texting was a much better idea.

For the record, I did not poop or pee my pants. I just stumbled over my words, and had a lot of awkward pauses, and just about ran out of time on the message.

MY favourite fruity pebbles commercial was when Barney looks directly into the camera and tells you the exact date of your death

I wasn't very happy about that one because it was a lot closer than what I expected but at the same time I guess I do like it because now I have been able to arrange accordingly. 2/24/2048

Has there ever not been an awkward voicemail? Voicemails are always inherently awkward. I hate them. They’re like 97% of the reason I’d rather text than call.

Texting is superior in every way and anyone who left a voicemail in the last decade is showing their age. In 2020+ every voicemail should get an automatic OKBOOMER text response and nothing else. the VM instantly deleted.

I am HARD anti-voicemail. Like, when someone calls me and leaves one, there's a very solid chance I will never listen to it, if it's not from someone I work with and plausibly relating to business. Voicemails are the worst thing since Malort.

Can we all please grow up about voicemails? They are not even bad, let alone “not that bad.” They’re necessary communication and when people fail to answer their voicemails, that means the only way for most businesses to reach them is calling and being lucky that you happen to be there. Which is a) much less useful; your phone might as well be a brick if this is how you behave and b) can have real negative consequences if you have something like a legal claim going on. I work with Social Security claimants and they rarely take voicemails, probably for all the reasons you just described. And you know what? They miss their appointments. They miss doctor visits. Their claims get denied or closed out because they are FAILING TO COMMUNICATE with their representation. “Can’t you just text me?” No. I can’t. My company does not have the budget to issue me a smart phone. Lawyers aren’t automatically rich; especially if you have a lawyer that “only gets paid if you win” - guess what?! Social Security is a dystopian system and some claimants are destined to lose until the judge decides they’re too old to be lying. We’re broke! We’re broke and too busy making up the difference in volume. We are going to keep calling you from these ancient landlines because they’re all we’ve got. So have a SHRED of decency and respect for the thousands of hours we sink into this, and ANSWER YOUR GODDAMN VOICEMAIL. “Ooh it’s scary! It’s so awkward! I don’t FEEL like it.” Nobody cares, all right? As long as phone calls are a valid form of communication to use, there are going to be voicemails. If you can’t do it, ask an older friend or family member to help you. If you can afford therapy, go to therapy and learn how. I’m not here to tell you it’s easy if you don’t feel like it’s easy. That’s okay. It can be hard if you feel like it’s challenging. What I AM here to do is tell you that, even if your loved ones never call you on the phone, some important people you work with in life still will. And we don’t deserve the pathological levels of avoidance you’re displaying. /endrant

@@emilysmith2965 I'm a fully grown adult and I answer business calls. I do have phone anxiety, and I don't care if you don't care, 'cause I care. I want to say you're projecting issues you have with someone else onto me because whether I treat my phone like a brick or not (which, incidentally, you're right! I do! I don't even bring it with me all the time!) I gather from your comment that you work for a law firm, and good for you, I wish you much success, but I've not in my life had cause to retain a lawyer or have any interaction with a law firm for any reason. Your difficulty reaching other people who are not, in fact, me, is lamentable, but literally not my fault. Please, rant on though. I can elaborate or clarify anything you need to know about my particular situation. I also want to add that my comment was *mostly* facetious. Not entirely, I grant you, but mostly, it was a joke. An embellishment. In the comment section of a clip from a comedy podcast. One which I ended with taking a shot at Malort, if you hadn't noticed. Anyway, hope you're doing well and I don't come across as combative.
