@@famousthaneus9810it does because Pearl is a reflection of Maxine when she was in her younger years. Pearl is basically the dark side of Maxine and the film Pearl shows how far she will go to achieve fame and fortune.

Crime drama with mystery and gore scenes sounds like a love letter to giallo to me. This is still my most anticipated movie of the year along with Longlegs. Very jealous that you got to see it early.

She said there’s no big Giallo influence. Malignant was another movie that was supposed to have a big Giallo influence but in the end it wasn’t more than the look of the killer that was Giallo inspired.

I don't watch trailers anymore as well because they give too much away! I'm glad I did watch this video though. As much as I would love to support horror in the theater (I did see the first two in theater) I think I am going to wait to see this one when it hits VOD.

Just rewatched both Pearl and X (in that order) last night to refresh my mind even though I’ve seen them each many many times 😂 I’m so excited for Maxxxine but lowered my expectations just a bit. Glad you got to see this one early!!🤩

Lucky Lady! I can't wait to see Maxxxine next week! I would love to see a direct sequel to Pearl. We could see what was going on with Pearl and Howard, maybe when they were in their 40s🤔

I wanted to come back and rewatch your review now that I’ve seen it! The stories are all so messy and the “mystery” element is so easy to figure out. And all the side characters were quite flat :( Mia Goth as Maxine is great tho, and Ti West’s vision really came through in his direction and editing. It’s a stunning film to look at. My favorite thing is that Maxine is an out of control driver 😭😂

I honestly love how Ti just suddenly dropped this trilogy into our laps. I don't think any of us saw this coming. I Mia has been on fire. X and Pearl in 2022, Infinity Pool in 2023 and now MaXXXine. As a side note, I deliberately ignored the trailers. The studios don't knows how to make them spoiler free anymore.

"The Wind" is the name of the ghost that lives there lol

My big issue with the film was hiding the obvious like he was keeping the audience in suspense. The reveal was so obvious that I was hoping West had something else up his sleeve, but when he didn’t, it turns into a weak 3rd act. There’s a lot to love about the film, though.

I'm re-watching Pearl and X this weekend, I love them so much. Thank you for presenting your point of view and making us go and watch the movie with the correct mindset when it premieres!

Savage Streets is a great reference point, definately in the vein of grimy 80s sleazy thrillers like that, Vice Squad, and Angel (not the Neil Jordan film). It's no where near as stylistically slick, but I felt there were a lot of nods to DePalma's Body Double.

Gonna see it this friday and caaaaant waaait 🎉

Once again... you are SOOOO lucky to see these advance screenings, im jealous!! I'm still super excited for Maxxxine. Mia Goth is a phenomenal actress. I love crime thrillers so I think this will be right up my street! BTW Emma, I think you need Russell Crowe to come and exorcise your office! That was some spooky shit going on right there!! It’s a ghost!” I had to watch a second time to get the content. 😱😂👻 Looking forward to Maxxxine and completing the trilogy. I definitely need to revisit X, it’s been awhile.

Sounds like it’s gonna be like a Brian de palma like horror crime film…great spoiler review I’m very interested and looking forward to it.

wow walking to the cinema late june like it isn't freezing right now lol I've been looking forward to MaXXXine but not as much as I was for Pearl. Pearl just grabbed me in all the right ways from the character to the cinematography style. I think the trailer for MaXXXine doesn't seem very character driven, and you did mention that the movie wasn't either. Its interesting though because its only set a few years after X. Still, I do love me an 80s style movie so will definitely be watching when I am able to! I wonder if a fourth movie could be about Maxine today or in a few years so we can see if she made it famous or not.

I'm glad you mentioned to rewatch X beforehand, I wouldn't have thought it would be super important given how much further on in the timeline it is! I think I might end up liking this more than X by the sounds of it, I liked that film a lot but felt let down by the hype, and I weirdly enjoyed Pearl a lot more. I love the 80s and crime films so it sounds right up my alley!

I recently watched X and Pearl for the first time so it’s pretty fresh in my mind! I think I watched Barbarian instead of X during that time. My gf didn’t want to go back to back weekends to the movies 😢 Can’t wait to see Maxxxine!

I got a big Cruising vibe from the trailer so I’m not surprised that this leans more crime drama than horror. I haven’t seen Savage Streets yet so maybe I’ll watch that and rewatch Angel before next month.

So sad I have to wait until it comes on VOD to watch because it's not playing in my country, but nonetheless super excited!! I love X to death and I like Pearl, so hopefully this can at least top the latter for me

Yeah 80's movies had a lot of "product placement" that was apart of the plot like Reese's Pieces in E.T.

The convoluted plot focus you describe feels kind of De Palma, perhaps? So curious to see how this one will hit me!

I haven't been this stoked for a movie in a really long time...maybe IT part 1, I don't know. At any rate, I'm really looking forward to this one. Even if it's not that scary, I do love a good crime thriller, and I love the visual aesthetic apparent in the trailer. It almost could make me forget how goofy the 80s actually were.

I wasn't as big of a fan of X and Pearl as most Horror fans and critics, but I still enjoyed them and I'm looking forward to Maxxxine as well.

I can’t wait. I love Maxine and I love Mia Goth. She is the best thing to happen to horror in a long time. In interviews, she seems like a proper British girl. But she can become so very unhinged. Love that!

Probably my fave movie trilogy honestly lol. Cheesy, campy, funny, and each story is so vastly different but yet connected and yet very simple plot that lead to a whole trilogy.

Is this a top trilogy in your opinion?

Thanks for the review, Emma. Always appreciate your insight, especially with a film like MaXXXine. I will watch the film, but maybe not in the theater. You've given me fair warning about the gore, but I don't know about the plot involving a fictionalized version of the real killer known as the Night Stalker. I lived in the area where the stalker began his terror reign in 1985 and it wasn't in Hollywood. So, I will proceed with caution. 😉

just watched and i think it has a lot of giallo themes and filmmaking styles such as how the killer was framed (leather gloves and faceless disguise) and even the killers over the top and dramatic performance. also the idea of introducing characters just to kill them off right after i do wish the movie had more on-screen kills though
