Heard this described as "if Terrence Malick directed a Friday the 13th film" and I think it fits perfectly.

I think lately there a lot of directors exposing their influence from directors like Terrence Malick, like The outwaters, robin, the director, said that Terrence was inspiration for his movie. A few days ago I watched The Giant, kind of a thriller and it shows a big influence from Malick’s style. I think there is some interesting mixing in styles in horror movies lately.

@@citizenvulpes4562 eh, it was boring for some horror fans not all. It's split as a lot of horror fans liked it. None of us speak for all horror fans and the idea that some of you are "true" horror fans and others aren't is ridiculous. Takes a special kind of arrogance to think here is some people who are "true" horror fans and others who aren't true. True is just a subjective term people make up when they want to discount people who disagree with them, nothing more than that.
Saw this one last week, everyone can agree on the brutality of the kills, but there's an interesting amount of pleasant nature sounds. As a person who grew up camping I found it was actually very serene. I loved this movie. Not sure what that says about me but I thought this was great.

@@spookyastronauts Angst (English: "Fear") is a 1983 Austrian horror film directed by Gerald Kargl, who co-wrote the screenplay with cinematographer and editor Zbigniew Rybczyński. It follows a psychopath recently released from prison and is loosely based on real-life mass murderer Werner Kniesek. Wikipedia *Angst is an amazing depiction of realistic murder capturing the savage chaotic nature of real life homicidal violence
This sounds like an ASMR slasher 😂 I like the high brow psychological horror but i also like experimental films and indie cinema. This sounds like an interesting experience! I would not have considered thjs movie without your review, thanks!
I don’t often get scared by horror (i suspect because of some combination of horror is my escapism and my own autism) but I found the end of this movie to be extremely tense. Knowing what the killer was capable of and just watching backgrounds and waiting for him to burst out to continue his spree really worked for me; it’s disappointing that even people who otherwise like the movie hate the ending.

@almondeyez00

Completely agree! SPOILERS AHEAD. Loved the ending. As the killer is the protagonist, we lose our “villain” and most of the movie isn’t scary for that reason. But the last 15 minutes were harrowing to me: Kris running in a “loop” cued by the repetitive bird sounds and “thwacking” noises was super eerie, and waiting for something terrible to happen during the car ride was very tense. I love the very end, as the “final girl” will never feel safe again. No final jump scare needed.

I loved the ending. I liked that they realistically showed how a person gains a permanent fear. That girl staring at the wood, turns something (nature) forever violent for her. The story about the animal? Just cemented the fact that nature can be irrationally violent in that girls mind and it wasn't a nature documentary. She now understood it because she'd lived it, and had taken part in it of being hunted, and it was her reality at that point, not just a "commonly held knowledge we live with but have no real clue about." that''s why the film and the ending worked on me
My take on the true intention of the "unsatisfying" ending is that not only will the traumatized Final Girl live in fear of Johnny's return for the rest of her life, but we should all know that there could be a million Johnnys out there, in every forest, that could be reawakened by the simplest offense or oblivious mistake. That's what makes the documentation terrifying 😎

I thought it was a bit of a meta homage to horror tropes of the bad guy jumping out. After all his slow walking I was genuinely on the edge of my seat thinking, "If he can suddenly outrun a car..." The tension was meta and not for the character, but it was tension nonetheless. Any tension is better than a cheap jump scare.
The review we have all been waiting for! :)
I thought the beauty of the forest (and the sound design of same) juxtaposed with the horrific kills kept me hooked. No pun intended.

Thanks for the review. Very much looking forward to it. I wanted to mention one thing: The slow tracking shots behind the killer and the long, static shots of nature in the distance, interrupted only occasionally with inventive violence, pays off in the end. But not in the way most slasher fans will appreciate. But I thought the tension built there was unique and had me glued to my seat until all the lights came on in theatre.
Oh an upload on Monday. What a treat!
Great review! I'm very excited to see this, as it sounds very interesting to me. One cool thing, is that the director is from my hometown, which is a small city in Northern Ontario. I'm super pumped that his movie is getting soo much hype.

just saw this yesterday and i really enjoyed it. as i was leaving the theater i told my friend i really hope you make a video on it.
I appreciate the concept and I’m happy to have supported it! I think it could’ve been a short film, maybe like 20-30 minutes. The slow burn didn’t build to anything so it felt flat as I walked out of the theater. The more I think about it the more I think it’s going to become an indie classic.
This review was amazing, Emma! I hung on your every word. I will so check this out! It sounds reallly interesting.

Thanks for the review, Emma. This is one film I have been looking forward to this year and I'm glad to hear that you liked it. Some critics have called it boring, while others say it is the new standard for horror. All I need is for it to be entertaining and I am prepared for the gore. Hope to see it soon and I will let you know.
I also believe that this is the appetizer/warm-up for LONGLEGS. Early reviews are just.coming out here in the states. Raves and qualified raves. I haven't read most of them in order not to be."spoilered".
Good review and cool video Emma!👉🙂👈
I actually went to see this movie twice in theatres opening weekend. Not because I loved it that much, but because I drank a bit too much the first time and didn't really remember much about it, lol. That said, I did really like this movie, despite its flaws. I thought it did a great job of bringing the boogeyman back to the slasher. It does undermine that a bit with at least one kill being a bit comedic (despite being brutal) and maybe lingering on one kill a little too long. The ending also falls flat for me - far too dragged out for too little pay-off. But even with those flaws, I did really enjoy it. I really like what you said about it being from the land's perspective (the Canadian folk song that plays during the end credits, The Blackfly Song, I think really backs that idea up). And I totally agree with you that taking this perspective allows for some meta-appreciation of the genre, a la Behind the Mask. Anyway, big fan of your channel. I'm gonna actually finish watching your video now.
I am glad you were able to watch this! I enjoyed it, it was filmed 2.5 hours from where I grew up so the scenery feels veeeeery familiar. The atmosphere and sound were standout aspects to me. The director of Psycho Goreman also helped with the practical effects, I think there is a lot of cross-over in the Canadian horror world right now

Yes!! Been waiting for you to talk about this!!
Just out of a secret screening and this is what was showed. I bloody loved it, the kills were epic, but my god ive been left with the ultimate creeps, the walking, lots of walking, so tense and the ending. Walking back to my car, i felt like i was in a horror film, looking all around me, locking car doors, scarpering as quick as possible into my house. Love it when a film makes you feel like this.
Saw it on Saturday. It's definitely very divisive. A couple people walked out of an already pretty empty theater. Im one of the people that liked it though. I would have actually preferred it if they commited more to the POV and only ever tangentially showed the victims until the end. I liked moments like when the killer is coming for them and you can hear them having a horror movie conversation("there's something strange going on here!") but you don't see them. I thought that was great. I'm going to make people watch a double feature of In A Violent Nature and Sasquatch Sunset. Find out who my real friends are.

Oh my, this sounds like my kind of horror film and an effective homage to the old slow burn slasher. I love the premise of little dialogue and no music to take away from the most important aspect of movie making, the visuals. Especially in a horror film, where the kills and fx are the main payoff. Makes me stuck even more in my own head, without distraction, searching for comprehension without the added bells and whistles. Can't wait for this one, just wish a theatre around me had it.

I loved this movie, though I also pretty much agree with everything you've said about it too including the dialogue and lack of payoff at the end. I never thought about the "A Ghost Story" comparison, though! Now I can't not see it! 😂
I loved this one. 8/10. The direct, realistic, stripped down nature of it was the spooky/unsettling aspect to me. Yeah, you gotta walk in the woods for 5 minutes to find your prey. We hear headlines like 'stabbed 29 times' well, this is what it's like 😂 takes a while. I think we are overly critical of bad writing and trope-y characters sometimes. We are all trope-y characters with bad dialogue in real life. Our theater in Albany, NY was like 70% full. Quite unheard of these days, esp for spooky movies. Quite a few of us had a good laugh too. I felt like I was among 'my people'.
Well I'm thinking I might give it a try! The more reviews I watch the more I'm intrigued!!
We've got to wait till mid July in the UK. Will have to watch this review first though 💯
Can't wait to own it to so I can put it in the background to take a nap to it or have it playing in the back at a Halloween party

Okay, I just saw "In A Violent Nature" and I pretty much agree with your review. I knew about the slow pace, having seen the trailer, and I was actually looking forward to how that would play out. Started out great and the transition campfire scene gave us some needed background. The kills were indeed brutal and can I say, even creative. A perfect showcase for the director's special effects skills. It does drag towards the end, so I finally settled on a score of 6/10.
My teenage self was loving it until the last 15 minutes which went on forever. Am I the only one that was hoping the lady in the truck was Johnny's mother, and she was going to drive her right to him? Now THAT would have been an amazing ending

I was expecting to discover Johnny had stowed away in the bed of the truck...or that he would suddenly pop out of the woods to come at them. Then when neither of those things happened, I applauded the sheer brass balls of it. Even if I do wish something had happened.
Sounds like folk horror/hauntology if it’s about the land and the ghosts of the past impacting on the present. Will probably check it out when it’s available here in the UK as I love all that shit
“The gore? Beautiful.” You’re a sick person Emma 😂. Great non-spoilery review though. Always love to hear your impressions about films. As for this one I’ll pass…I’m not really one for realistic horror but I can appreciate that there are many people who are. I personally like the horror tropes (the rules, as you put it) that allow me to escape my anxiety/depression, so something about vampires or a campy Freddy movie is more my thing. Or supernatural shenanigans. Can’t wait for your next review. Hooroo ✌🏼
There’s a good portion of it that just feels like a third person video game. I loved it tbh. I so appreciate the lack of music in no country for old men, glad you mentioned that I didn’t realize it

Been waiting for this review!
I liked it. I think the slow pace following him from behind was good, but it seemed weird. I guess him waling through the woods, it wasn't as scary because he was following the path, so him meandering on the trail where it was easiest to walk seemed to lessen his scariness. It wasn't as menacing like Jason who is walking in a straight line to his victim. It's like, "I'm a relentless killer, but I don't want to walk through that poison ivy either."
The Void was lit
I was anxiously awaiting your review but didn't want to bug, I knew you would get to it! I haven't seen it yet but I am definitely going to! People are really divided on this movie, the biggest complaints I hear are that it's painfully slow, cheesy acting and unrealistic decision making by the victims, but isn't that what a slasher is? Everyone is in agreement that it is brutal in the violence department! So I'm going to kick back and enjoy myself a nice slow brutally gory slasher!😁...pssst I really enjoy all your review's, awesome content!😊👍

Too much walking 🚶♀️ but we got a Friday the 13th movie 😂
So I saw it and I see both sides to what people live and what people hate. Literally hated what everyone else did and literally loved what everyone else loved. The kills, OMG some of the most creative and brutal I’ve ever seen!! YOGA!!! Enough said! In saying all that…I don’t know what you would even call this movie…there wasn’t a second of this movie where I was scared or terrified, like at all. Probably the most un scary/horror I’ve ever seen.
