    I enjoyed the watchers I thought it was definitely competently shot and directed. Dakota fanning was great but I think the idea wasn't as fleshed out as should've been and a few plot holes just stayed on my mind throughout the film. Gonna have to wait for in a violent nature to shudder here cause their is no theatrical release here in Australia. Great review as always

    I agree w/ many of your points regarding The Watchers. For what it’s worth (just my personal take) - I thought it was a very impressive directorial debut. That said, if it had been directed by someone with multiple films to their name, I probably would be much more critical. Ultimately, the reveal behind “the watchers” is what left a bad taste in my mouth.. I’d elaborate, but don’t want to ruin it for those who haven’t seen it and/or those who enjoyed the reveal behind who they are.

    i can't help but agree that a lot of people that already have a bone to pick with shyamalan immediately decided that the watchers was gonna be bad i gotta be honest, i can't think of anything more BORING than seeing a film this fresh and unique and all you can think to do after you see is poke around to see how many logistical issues you can find with it (and no, just because something doesn't have a clear-cut explanation doesn't make it a plot hole, especially in a FANTASY story) it's certainly got it's issues, i can't say the characters were all that compelling, and maybe there's a little too much exposition. but at the same time when you have concepts and mythology that are this interesting and underexplored, i actually WANT to know more! gimme a bit of lore!

    I just feel like for the Watchers, the visuals were AMAZING and the plot was very very interesting but it really lacked in the line delivery department. there were so many unnatural lines the characters kept saying that I wasn't sure if it was partly satire on horror tropes like Malignant. The main character also keeps repeating about her mothers death that it starts to be annoying really quick like "ok we already know that information, do you have something new to show us". I feel like they could have easily make her backstory of her moms death more of a mistery that slowly unravels as the movie goes on (like her sister did NOT need to tell us on the phone " its been 12 years since mother's death", like just say "its been 12 years", we as an audience would be then interested to find more like "what happened 12 years ago?!?") but they tell us (a lot of times) in the beginning of the movie which was just too lazy, it felt plain , like they went with the safest way possible of showing psychological childhood trauma. also for the line deliveries, there's so many awkward moments like the child saying "yes mother" with the most monotone voice, the characters randomly stopping to look around and randomly saying "hurry up" when they were already running to begin with. main character telling all her backstory to the bird in the first part of the movie because its better to "tell not show". (also the fake jumpscares like a cockroach appearing didn't help either) even with this, i still gave it a 4/10 (which is prety good in my book) cuz I still very much enjoyed the story and LOVED the visuals!! like damn, the people behind the camera work knew their shit, there so many moments in which the movie looks like a wallpaper with their lightning and camera positions, like it really showed they cared to make it stand out.

    I really liked in a violent nature, I think it fills the void of the Friday the 13th movie many of us were hoping for and waiting for😂 the kills being over the top and the dialogue being so tropey just makes me think of this film as a Friday homage, it seems like the style was designed to fit that franchises aesthetic, but switching the perspectives is funny because we see how Johnny mainly just walks around aimlessly all day. The SpongeBob comment killed me😂😂😂 I’m glad to hear you liked The Watchers, I personally didn’t and decided to maybe just give the book it’s based on a chance since I usually prefer fantasy in a book rather than a movie for whatever reason. I know The Watchers is M night’s daughter, but on the topic of his movies, he’s super hit or miss for me. While I loved the village and signs, I didn’t enjoy Old or Knock at the cabin. Maybe it’s something about the book adaptations?! I saw the trailer for Trap and I think that one might be fun and actiony, I’ll just have to see!!

    I liked the tropes and expectations that In A Violent Nature explores and subverts. We're shown so much but then shown very little (i.e. the eye squish). I wasn't looking for a real character lead or much story. I feel like we didn't need anything like that with this one when we get a lot of that EVERYWHERE else. This thing was different. Johnny was our guy. We felt his trauma, he was out for blood. That's okay. I kinda just liked this dude walking through the woods killing folks. There was a weird nature ASMR quality to the sound design, which you mentioned. But have we ever seen that before? Not really. Not done this well. So it works. I feel like they knew exactly what they were doing, completely aware of F13 and all that jazz. The 4:3 felt retro like a late night cheap-ass horror movie on cable. It all just adds to the vibe, right? There's nothing deeper for me than that. I like deep.. but not all the time. This was a nice break from some of the "elevated" (guh) A24-ish horror that we all love. This isn't Hereditary. We're getting a beautifully shot movie that gives us annoying kids get squashed by a ghost monster tromping through the woods. How often does that happen? I'm in. And it was so fun in a theater, I loved that. It's nice sometimes to take a break and watch a self-aware horror (horror/comedy?) that knows exactly what and why it's doing what it does. I love your review, I love all of your content, you're great! 💀

    For In a Violent Nature, I liked it. I think the slow pace following him from behind was good, but it seemed weird. I guess him waling through the woods, it wasn't as scary because he was following the path, so him meandering on the trail where it was easiest to walk seemed to lessen his scariness. It wasn't as menacing like Jason who is walking in a straight line to his victim. It's like, "I'm a relentless killer, but I don't want to walk through that poison ivy either."

  • @thomasffrench3639
    @thomasffrench3639Ай бұрын

    In a Violent Nature was fine. It was engaging, had good cinematography and the killer was a great character. However, it was a very middle of the road slasher and felt pretty empty. I think this film shows that victims being entertaining or interesting is very important in slasher films. I don’t really get why people got bored with this, but maybe it’s my ADHD being able to focus better than Neurotypical people when it comes to In a Violent Nature. Maniac movies focus on a serial killer, and since those films have speaking killers, it isn’t as shallow as this movie is. Although I don’t know if Michael is more interesting than Jason. They are both just as mysterious in the characters. As far as walking loudly, I basically have to use all of my mental energy in order to walk loudly.

    In a violent Nature I have not seen. My AMC did not screen it. So I took your advice about The Watchers so I stopped this video. Lucky me I check my theater and the movie was starting in ten minutes. But don’t worry my AMC theater is real close. So I’m back listening to your review of the watchers. I have to say this I’m a big fan of M. Night Shyamalan’s work. Why? I go in with my thinking cap on. People will say he has his ups and downs. I always find something to enjoy and think about later. His daughter as worked with him and her direction in this film shows it. There a lot of tales and folklore out there to explore. I own all of his film and always will. I just feel it nice once in a while for you the audience to put yourself into a movie and be a listener and a Watcher. 🧐 Maybe we’ll see a Directors Cut in physical media. Sometimes the studio wants you to trim some stuff that would help the story. So to end don’t worry about owning it on physical media. I will sent you a copy when it comes out. Hey, maybe a steel-book if they have one.

    Double feature review! I think these are a good idea for sure. Your first one got so many hits and you get to talk about horror much longer! But so far, Ive only seen one of these movies lol *SPOILERS* One of my horror cult members literally had one word to review In a Violent Nature: Snoozefest! And honestly I agree. Your 3 star letterboxd review perplexed me lol I feel like for as interesting an idea this movie sounded on paper, with the following of the killer instead of the victims, but that inherently sucks out any tension or suspense. And some classic slasher movie conventions are just flat out ignored, like how unceremoniously showing the killer unmasked was or when that sheriff had a backstory with the killer terrorizing his family and doesn’t get to avenge them, just killed off slowly and brutally, like a big middle finger to him and the audience haha But another thing my friend pointed out was the lack of a musical score. I get the nature vibes but not having the music or a “ki ki ki ma ma ma” sound kinda made it boring to me. Movies need music! lol but in the end, it was an interesting experience. Top notch kills but it’s not enough for me. I’ve seen KZread videos of people playing the Friday the 13th video game and this movie feels like the film version of just that, i mean talk about a non-movie lol but I’ll support anything shudder puts out, even if the movie is better watched on streaming than theaters 🫢 Thank you again maggot mommy for giving us your thoughts on these recent horror releases! I definitely feel like you’re one of the few people giving both of these movies a glowing review going off your letterboxd!

    I thought they would lean more into the comedy as the movie went on to justify the lack of suspense but was obviously disappointed when that wasn't the case. As far as the other ignored conventions I think that was purposeful to do everything in the opposite fashion it's normally done but I agree for the most part those choices were boring

    I read The Watchers and I really enjoyed it and while the movie was gorg, the script was weak. They needed to cut all the narration, esp in the middle of the movie., show don't tell. Also, they were starving in book and they didn't event address that in the movie - which I think they needed to to show their crazy and desperation. That being said, I do not mind when things deviate from the book,, but I think they needed someone to read the script who wasn't as close to the source material. I know the author helped with the script too. If you read the book you had more information and that filled in the illogical parts.

    Ok, my thoughts on Dune are that it's sci-fi. However, early sci-fi was literally fantasy stories set in space, and after Dune sci-fi became more heady like 2001, Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell. So Dune is like a pivot point where early space fantasy sci-fi turned into modern heady sci-fi. So it's like a bridge from one to the other. That's my simplified interpretation, anyway. Not sure that helps, but it's been in my head for months! Finally got to put it somewhere haha For the video topic, I want to see these movies. I've seen some reviews on In A Violent Nature and it sounds interesting. Is it like Skinimarink meets Friday the 13th? That's what it sounds like people are saying. I could be wrong, though. I'll give Watchers a shot too. It's weird that Watchers has the same title as the Dean Koontz book/movie from the late 80s/early 90s. That one was about a genius dog trying to protect its new owners from a flesh eating monster. It's basically sci-fi-monster-horror. Kind of a slasher, really. The movie version got a sequel Watchers 2. Same thing but slightly different. I watched both of those movies when I was 10 or 11 in the early '90s. Those movies were terrifying as a small child. This was a weird comment, but I didn't know what else to say.

If this killer is essentially just a rip-off of Jason Voorhees, why not just make another reboot of Friday the 13th and have it entirely from his perspective? As for The Watchers, that actually sounds much more interesting. Also, just learned that Ishana Night Shymalan is my age and she directed this film! Impressive, most impressive.

    both of these are very meh. IaVN at least have some nasty kills. Alien Romulus and LongLegs are in my running for the best horror/thrillers of summer.

    And there is so many different little things they did in the movie from the book that made me kinda salty but idk overall this would’ve done better as a tv show

    Also sorry for so many comments but if you read the book I’d love a movie to book comparison video if you ever were to do that I think it would be so cool or like a deep dive on the folklore in the movie would also smack
