24:14 Somebody said that in another review too. The more I think about it, the more sense it would have made to have Jupe be the protagonist. If not, atleast a major side character that isn't thrown away to get a vague point across. A film about Jupe overcoming his flawed thinking that came from his trauma, all while facing down a otherwordly creature he mistakenly trusts & doesn't understand sounds better than what we got.

This was by far, the best review to this movie that I have seen yet. I agree with you 100% and you nailed the overall emotion that I left the theatre with on opening day. I am relieved to see someone as articulate and experienced as yourself, come to the same overall conclusion as me about all the loose ends and non-necessities in this movie. Thanks for not hoping on the bandwagon like everyone else, and telling it like it is. Every other review I’ve watched has been just praising this movie solely because of the director and it’s originality while excluding all the misses and filler in the film. Keep up the good work.

Wonderful review. There were some genus touches like making the alien look like a camera shutter when it’s consuming. Also that scene where the actress that had been attacked by the chimp stood up was fantastic. But you’re right too many themes trying to get packed in and didn’t leave room for story or characters. Despite the leads being wonderful. Us had similar problems but to a lesser extent because the surface level plot was more compelling and the vibe was immaculate. I also love Jordan Peele and think he’s amazing and can’t wait to see what he does next

Really good review. Just discovered your channel a few weeks back and have watched a couple of your vids. What I like about this movie (and others that follow similar logic) is that we (the audience) know as much about the events as the characters. Many of the open-ended questions are the same that the characters would have. Exposition dumps are convenient and help the audience understand details- and they can be great; but all movies don't need to follow the same formula.

Nice shirt! Yeah I agree with you, it was slow. My favorite thing about it was the cool Spielberg like fun atmosphere of it. And most movies are like 20 minutes too long these days or at least feel like it. Great characters, nothing too forced, just didn't quite hit fully on all cylinders, but I have a feeling it will be a good rewatch to throw on

I happened to be on the side that enjoyed this film, I overlooked a lot of what you mentioned because they’re was so much that I actually enjoyed. The cast chemistry, the story itself was interesting and I also loved the score. That’s a big thing for me in movies-the score can make/break a movie for me. I was also disappointed that they killed Yueng off-it knocked down some points for me like you said there was no character arc and there was so much potential with his story 🤦🏽‍♀️. Hey Kylie, Great video, as always! I do have a question and a comment that I would like to share with you. 1. Have you seen anyone making a comparison between Jordan Peele and M. Night Shyamalan after the release of Nope? In particular, that both directors started off hot and their usual bag of tricks getting old (Shyamalan) or will get old after a while if they don’t go something differently (Peele). If so, what are your thoughts on that comparison? Do you have any concerns about Peele as a director going forward? 2. I always appreciate how you don’t allow anyone to sway your opinions and how you always stay true to what you think/believe! Keep that up!!

I’ve seen some people saying Peele might be a one hit wonder with Get Out but I thought Us was a great movie. I do worry that he’ll constantly try to capture that lightning in a bottle that was Get Out by trying to shock us and make everything he does super theme heavy when imo that’s not necessary

  • @jeorgehicks2324

@@HauntedHippie People seem to be divisive on both Us and Nope, and it’s fine to have differenting opinions on films. The ability to have a different opinion is part of the beauty of being a movie fan. Your comment on Peele trying to recapture the lightning in the bottle that was in Get Out in his other films by shocking us and being super theme heavy is reminiscent of Shyamalan trying to recapture the lightning in the bottle of his twist. Some of Shyamalan’s twists after The Sixth Sense have worked and others have not faired so good. I am a fan of Jordan Peele and I do want him to have a successful career as a director!

What did you think of the alien/creature design towards the end of the movie when it changes its form? One of my friends and I had a whole discussion about it the other day, and she was saying how she loved it bc it had this beautiful, abstract, and almost hypnotic look, and that would make sense for a predator to have in order to lure its prey. I got what she was saying but idk, in the moment when I saw it didn't do much for me. I didn't hate it but my reaction was basically, "huh ok that's interesting I guess."

@@HauntedHippie It was a threat display. Basically, each chapter was about different ways of handling animals (and how the entertainment industry does it badly), and OJ had figured out he was supposed to treat it like a predator. Don't look at it in the eyes, don't run away. So the creature was being confronted by its "handlers", it was expanding itself to its full size and most-threatening.

  • @hollandscottthomas

    @hollandscottthomas

    2 жыл бұрын

@@HauntedHippie Yep! Because it's about how each of the animals is handled in those chapters. Each of them needs a special kind of wrangling, but the main two are Lucky (belligerent, and oJ has to form a bond to work with him), and Ghost (who was there when their father died and the alien first showed up, hence "ghost"). Gordy gets his own chapter too, because it's the experience Jupe has which makes him think he has a special connection to dangerous creatures, which is why he's essentially trying to "fist bump" the alien by feeding it. The cinematographer (who is watching dangerous animal docos in all his scenes) is likewise too confident that he can treat this like any other animal because Hollywood has made him arrogant. OJ's arc is about him coming to engage with his family's legacy and history as animal wranglers, so he's the one that figures out how to use behavioural training tricks to get what they want. They're still exploiting a dangerous creature for their own gains though. I can't specifically remember how it works cos it's been a few days, but that was the main through-line I picked up on :)

Great review! I agreed in some areas but didn't see it as a bad movie or so negatively as you did. But I also didn't grade it against Get Out (or Us, even though I thought Us was just alright). I'm a Key and Peele fan before Peele hit is big as a director and even though I think Get Out is a masterpiece, I just don't have the hype for him as a movie director like many others have because I tend to think of the "These nuts" skit or "Nooice" when I think about Jordan Peele. The main things I agree with in this review is that Peele seems to be trying to infuse so many themes and metaphors, that none of them felt fully developed. And the beginning was a bit of a slog. But it was a beautiful movie to look at, the characters were well-acted and likeable, and there were a bunch of scenes that felt powerful, just not cohesive to the rest of the movie's themes and pacing. Maybe the disappointment of what could have been made you feel that much more distaste for it, but I felt there was too much good in the film to outright dislike it. I think your idea of making two movies would have been much better.

The Thing Is I Just Knew Better Than To Come Into A Jordan Peele Film With High Expectations Because The Kind Of Expectations Any Jordan Peele Fan Myself Included Has With Any Other Film After Get Out Like US & Now NOPE, I Had To Suspend Disbelief That Any Structural Quality Or Inventive Taste Would Be The Same As How Well He Accomplished GET OUT. So I Had To Watch This Movie With An Bright Open Mind & Just Accept The Film For What It Is. And While There Are Obvious Issues & Structural Pacing Problems As Mentioned, The Overall Concept Of The Movie Is STILL Very Mind Blowing & The Creative Elements Incorporated In The Film Are Ridiculously Mind Bending In A Specific Moments. Is It Almost A Perfect Jordan Peele Film, Absolutely, But Is It As Groundbreaking As Some Of His Past Projects.... Some People May Think So But For Me, Slightly But Sincerely Not Even Close💯

Solid breakdown Kylie. Well I’d personally thought NOPE was pretty solid film. Yes it does borrows tropes, Extraterrestrial elements from its predecessors from The Sci Fi genre, it further the narrative moving forward about the UFO attacking the planet. Mainly touched on areas such as dealing with family/personnel trauma while overcoming those obstacles. I Personally Don’t have expectations for films anymore because if ya set the bar super high it’ll mostly feel disappointing in the grand scheme of things. Jordan Peele filmmaking is rather unique because he didn’t go to the territory route of Get out or US & the bigger budget pretty much emboldened help up the ante for the scope of the cinematography. The Main cast OJ Daniel Kaluuya Keke Palmer emerald was solid choices for the role. Id would’ve like Steven Yuen Gordy could’ve had little more screen time. You gave a good depth analysis of your main core issues and gripes with it as a whole!

One more thing to add (thank you for your analysis): it was important to have a predominantly minority cast (Black, Asian, and Spanish) in a film set in Montana, "Big Sky Country." When you think of that state, and its adjacent territories, you may not think of that

I enjoyed this film, particularly the visuals and its wacky premise (Jaws but instead of a shark it's a carnivorous flying bouncy castle). But it definitely needed a script doctor, or maybe full blown script surgery. I straight up thought a scene was missing at one point, when we cut back to Steven Yeun's character and he not only knows about the creature but has been wrangling it in a stage show for presumably some time. If that was even hinted at before that point, I missed it. It'd actually be better to watch Jordan Peele's films in reverse order, as the scripts get progressively tighter that way!

This point has probably already been brought up, but their third-great grandfather being the jockey on the horse in the first motion picture isn’t just a plot thread that didn’t go anywhere. It’s one of the key things in OJ and Em’s characters. To Em, the whole speech is just a speech. It’s just the thing you say at the start of shoots. It’s the hook that she uses to pitch her side hustles to interested parties. It’s the launching point. To OJ, that speech is everything. When Em wants to flee the ranch because it’s not safe, OJ stays. Not only because he “has mouths to feed.” But because of the core belief that he is a Haywood. Their family’s legacy is tied to this ranch, to these horses. Yes, he has been selling horses to Jupe. But to keep the ranch afloat. And, more importantly, because he did so thinking eventually he’d be able to buy them back. When Em wants to give up on the Oprah shot, OJ pushes through. Because he NEEDS that money to keep the ranch afloat. Bring attention the the ranch. Bring customers. I agree with your main critique, that it’s not Peele’s most complex movie, it’s very simple. But I think a lot of the loose threads you mention aren’t threads that don’t lead anywhere, they are instead foundations to allow the simpler, few story threads to flow through.

In Jaws they were forced to show the shark minimally because Bruce the shark kept malfunctioning. It created the "less is more" method where the audience gets more scared by not overexposing them to the antagonist. Well this method didn't work for me in NOPE. I wanted to see more of the UFO. Are there aliens piloting it? Is it just some mechanical monster-vehicle? I wanted answers to these questions. The lack of the UFO didn't give me enough to create enough fear for me. I did think it was cool how the UFO darting around behind and between the clouds kind of resembled a brief shark sighting in the ocean. Edit: Haha. Just saw the part where you mentioned Jaws. Lol

While I think I enjoyed the movie a bit more, I completely agree with your critiques. The lack of character development, and essentially no character arcs, really hurt the movie for me. It’s so clearly a character driven movie and I love how simple it is/the cast is, but they don’t ever really go anywhere! I think maybe they were just juggling too many ideas and this movie needed some reigning in. All that said I still think it’s quite good, and even with it’s faults is still the type of movie I hope to see more of in the future.

Totally got the gripes but I actually think the simplicity of the movie is what made it for me. At this point peele knows who watches his movies and probably didn’t feel he had to make a movie as enriched with details as his previous ones. Humor landed for me on both viewings but I’d say the only issue was it was waiting to take off. By the end I was legitimately considering getting another ticket to watch it again. Ended up preferring this to get out because Us changed me lmao. Also I love your articulation :) subbed

Outside of being a commentary on spectacle, the movie also touched on mankind’s history of exploiting nature for profit and inability to control it. The monkey subplot and beginning scene with the horse, both showcased how humans have attempted to use animals as part of our entertainment and how these types of actions can go horribly wrong (a la Siegfried and Roy!) Although we disagree, watching you talk about it for 30 mins made my day though ❤️😍

K, great film analysis as always I do agree that some of the (many) characters' plot lines were 'underdeveloped,' but I think also that it was incumbent upon us watchers to fill in the blanks. Most pointedly (I saw the film last night) was the 'chimpanzee attack' scene; it would have been too brutal to show in full. However, that did tie in to the whole thread of creatures (apes/horses/aliens) 'losing their shit' when looked in the eye (or if a balloon was involved)

It felt like with more experience these themes could have been tied together, what we got was unsatisfying. Really enjoyed the very ending tie in but that's about it. Also what about the shoe?? What a strange red herring and I still don't have a logical explanation for it and just so much else. Even, and I know this sounds pedantic, but how is it turning off electronics? EMP damages electronics, I'm not sure how else you can stop them functioning with a field like that. Where did the creature (not alien) actually come from?? WHY was it territorial about this area?? So many interesting questions just left unexplored, and instead lots of kind of pointless back and forth repetitive dialogue. Oh also! (This is turning into a rant) the decision between comedy and horror was not made decisively enough in so many moments, leading to an awkward hedge that really was neither!

Jordan Peele’s films are a hit or miss for me. Get out was good but predictable and overrated imo while Us was too frustrating for me to enjoy. I had little to no expectations for Nope and I’m not a fan of sci-fi too but Nope surprised me and I ended up loving it. I actually liked that the social commentary was more subtle this time around. I felt Peele's balance of comedy and horror worked a lot better in Nope compared to Get Out and esp Us, and Emerald and Angel were the standouts. I will admit the pacing was slow at times but I enjoyed the slow burn and for me the characters were well developed and really likable. I give Nope a 9/10. My ranking is Nope > Get Out > Us SPOILER ALERT: . . . . The scene of Jean Jacket devouring the people and throwing up their remains on the Haywood house will forever haunt my dreams

I found your channel a couple weeks ago and have been binging a lot of your videos since! I just watched Nope last night and I kinda felt the same way. I always was trying to analyze it while watching it because after watching Get Out for the first time, that’s how I went into Us and enjoyed it so much. But with Nope, I… didn’t get that intrigue and mystique like the other two. Maybe that was on me for expecting that type of movie, but oh well. This movie just didn’t hit for me. Looking forward to more of your content as a fellow film student!

I've seen a lot of people who weren't very happy with this. I worry that Peele is going to be pigeonholed in that space where M Night Shyamalan resides. The Sixth Sense was SO good that people just flocked without a thought to the next. Unbreakable was fantastic, but it didn't have the same punch that The Sixth Sense did. Then you get Signs and people either loved Signs or they hated it. From that point on, people go to see if they can still get that same Sixth Sense rush, but most of the time people have come out disappointed. Its not even the movies are not good (although there are some that are NOT good), but its that the movies aren't the Sixth Sense. I worry that is going to be the case for Peele too. Get Out was fantastic, such a great movie all around. Us was good, but I feel like it got a bit more criticism When we saw Nope was coming out people were out of their minds about it and people flocked because is Peele and are expecting still that Get Out level of great. His reputation from his first movie has the potential to tank his career in the public eye if he never hits that Get Out level of brilliance again even if the movies are actually good. Does that make sense? I feel like I'm rambling, lol.

I didn't consider Jupe either, but taking into consideration what you said, he would have indeed been a lot more interesting to follow than what we did get. This film is a mess, but it's still entertaining and fun enough.

Jupe connects because of his experience with animals on film! When Gordy went nuts, Jupe was the only person to survive because of his "connection" with the chimp (exploding fist-bump). Now that he's an adult, he's treating the alien/ship the same way, thinking that he has a special connection. It links to the rest of the film because the siblings are from an animal wrangling family, so they come to understand the creature from a place of mutual respect and understanding the danger, so they treat it more like a predator. So Jupe's in there as contrast.

@@HauntedHippie Jordan is a great filmmaker and his cinematographer did amazing. But he don't need to be writing his scripts by himself. Sure, he knows the story he wants to tell, but a lot of his execution comes off like it was the first thing that popped into his head while writing. Like he's never questioned or forced to think about how things play out or connect. It was an ok muddled film, definitely not this masterpiece people think it is tho. 💯 agreed. However IMO Us was terrible. Alot of the problems you are pointing out with Nope, were already apparent in Us, such as Peele’s tendency to ignore his own rules or logic in service of a plot point. When little Adelaide goes to the fair & sees her image In the mirror, we find out it’s actually a person, a tethered. Why oh why would a tethered be wearing the exact same outfit that Adelaide chose to wear that day? Are we meant to believe all the tethered own all the outfits their counterparts own. So when a human buys a new outfit, the tethered then creates that exact outfit? How? Ppl can give the film a pass by saying it’s a metaphor so don’t worry about plot holes. But it’s still a movie & still needs to make sense. It’s obvious JP just wanted the cool imagery of the tethered being a mirror image so he just didn’t care how to get there. That mirror image plot point is all that mattered & all logic went out the window. This shows he just doesn’t care about his audience. The fact that he chose to rewrite his entire script on a whim further shows he doesn’t care. With Nope he did this & far worse. I feel like he only cares about imagery & making cool trailers. He only had the dancers things & the girl w the mangled face so he cld put them in & intrigue us w the trailer. They weren’t important to the movie at all. He is literally baiting & switching ppl with that trailer. Oh look there are grays in my movie! Oh JK i’ll just make fun of the fact that there are grays in other movies! Ive lost all respect for him as a filmmaker. Get out was ok. Us was terrible but at least he got his social commentary thru clearly. With Nope I don’t think he even knows or cares what he is trying to say. The movie was not scary at all, rambling, lacking focus/direction, incoherent, nonsensical & uninteresting. How critics are praising it is mind boggling. I actually read a critic who said the best advice he can give is to “not think too much” when you watch Nope. Um yeah, no thanks.
