I hate when people say “you shouldn’t be caring. It’s a kids movie, it isn’t for you.” Just because a kid is gonna be watching it, doesn’t mean it should be half assed. Kids should still have the quality of writing and production that an adult show would have. It’s insulting to think that a child will just sit and watch anything you put in front of them. Yeah that is the truth for a while but they will start to get some common sense, especially nowadays where it’s easy to access anything online, making it twice as fast for a someone’s opinion to be changed.

  • @tamiK6

But you see the important thing is, that the movies are going to sell specifically when kids are of age. The companies depend on kid's, well, not so picky taste and parent's blindness. If anything I would blame the parents for giving their money away on mediocre films, since that's the true reason we are getting more and more of them

Isaac Munger When? I remember the scene being identical to the clip they posted on KZread: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aotq1NCtcqSqhbQ.html I did mention the "plain cheese" part just in case they mentioned it somewhere, but I don't see where that would have happened. Isaac Munger Not worth watching again to confirm, but I'll take your word for it. There was quite a bit of obnoxious laughter following the punchline (particularly from someone sitting 2 seats away from me), so either that distracted me or the one line didn't stick with me. I made that point under the impression that it could've been mentioned somewhere, so no big deal and thanks for the minor correction. It's funny to imagine a place that wouldn't accommodate selling a slice of plain cheese.

Is horniness an emotion? If so, once the girl reaches puberty and her hormones start kicking in, will another homunculus suddenly spring up in her head and cause her to make bad decisions in high school? Is there a homunculus for the guilt she'll experience when she gets that abortion?

Dr Shaym Actually, they kind of allude to that at the end. After all the shenanigans are over, the girl gets a new mental "control center" that is much bigger and more complicated than the previous ones, and there is a big red button that says "Puberty." So, although they certainly couldn't indulge too directly because it's a kid's movie, seems the filmmakers realized the same inevitability you did.

Toy Story 3 is really only similar to 2 in some basic arbitrary plot similarities. Complaining that the themes are too similar is hilarious to me, because Adum would have 100% complained about a lack of thematic consistency if it hadn't tackled similar themes to 2. 3 intentionally builds on 2's themes by elaborating on and continuing the questions that 2 set up.

Sure Dreamworks has made way worse garbage as Shark Tale and Trolls, but they've also made more varied types of films as Monsters vs Aliens, Megamind and How to Train Your Dragon, plus the criminally underrated 2D films Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron and the Prince of Egypt.

Edit: For the record for a few of the other replies I just noticed, I never said the designs or textures look BAD, I think the artists did a fantastic job with texturing, it just doesn't personally fit in well for me. Okay, you make some really valid points about it being formulaic and predictable -- however what really got me about this movie was that it really tries to understand how "emotional complexity" works. As a kid, of course your emotions are simple and you're mostly happy all the time; but part of growing up is learning how to cope with negative experiences and how to process the wide range of emotions that aren't simple at all. Having happy memories back home tinged with sadness IS a complex emotion and the movie allows it to be both joyful and sad. You said you laughed at the part where she cries in school, but what I find amazing about that is that it creates the first "sad" core memory she has -- that's a really negative and painful experience and she's going to remember it forever. I thought this movie was remarkably compassionate and emotionally intelligent in the way it frames sadness as something necessary to our emotional make-up, and how it frames joy as stepping back and allowing Riley to feel other emotions too. Part of growing up is not being happy all the time and learning to process your feelings. When sadness finally takes control and Riley let's herself feel sad I literally lost it in the theater -- it's so easy to feel pain and try to harden up and shut the feelings out, but sometimes you really just have to let yourself feel how much you're in pain. Like I said, you're absolutely right that it's predictable and not really innovative -- but I think it actually presents emotional complexity well, and it presents it in the context of growing up and learning.

while it’s important to criticize childrens media and expect quality movies, it’s also important to remember that the concepts in them will have to be simplified in order for smaller children to better understand them. inside out is kinda shallow in its premise of exploring emotional complexity but i think a part of that is intentional in order for very little kids to fully grasp how simple emotions build with each other to make one’s that are harder to describe. i think when viewing this movie in a lens of what small children are able to grasp it handles its topic pretty well. i cried as a kid when i first watch this movie, rewatching as an adult i see how it’s a bit illogical, but overall it still works well

If you ask me it is much easier to create something realistic by ripping it off from real life, than creating a working caricature character design from scratch. I think it's important for a studio to have their own unique look and in my opinion Pixar does that pretty well.

Old video, but at one point you mention Riley being unaware that her emotions are sentient, but I'm pretty sure they aren't, and are just personified emotions. They do things with little explanation because that's often how emotions are, especially for someone young and hormonal. When Sadness "touches the emotion ball" when Riley was previously happily introducing herself to her class, it's just a way to visualize Riley's thought process. She was initially happy to discuss her history before remembering that she's moved and isn't where those happy memories she was just relating to the class were, therefore, her remembering went from reminiscing to mourning, the happy memories become sad ones. Moving away from her home that she loved makes it harder for her to have joy be the predominant mood of hers since she is in an unfamiliar area she never wanted to be in, letting other emotions take over. They aren't literally fighting for dominance in her head, but her own slump allows more negative thoughts to front in the mind. I think you might've misinterpreted the movie a bit, which might've hampered your enjoyment, it is a little smarter than you let on. Although, I agree, it isn't that funny.

NOTE: Not saying I agree with Ebert. Just explaining why I think people are using a certain argument commonly. I think most people are coming from the Roger Ebert school of critique when they say it's a kids film. Ebert had the idea that you should always rate/review things for the target audience or as the film is setting itself up to be. So when people say "it's a kids movie," they're taken aback (I suppose,) that you are looking at it along side every other film. I'm not saying your philosophy is incorrect if it's just to look at it as a movie. It just makes sense to me why people would commonly use that as a dispute. You could argue that there are better kids films, and you'd be (most likely,) right. I haven't seen this one, so for all I know it could be average (skipped spoilers.) The Ebert philosophy would probably not rate this kind of thing super highly simply because it examines it along side other films of a similar nature--such as what you did. Just explaining the mentality is all.

Kinda weird seeing you here as well. I guess my KZread circle is small lol...

GoatJesus Well the problem stems from people then assuming that it is the greatest movie ever made which it isn't. Since its a movie aimed towards children, most people aren't analyzing or focusing too hard while watching it in the theater which makes them miss any problems with the film. I mean look at Frozen. Its gotten so popular to the point that its obnoxious even though it is just the same old typical animated kids movie. If people would actually use their brain while watching, they would see how un-special it is. Nobody is saying that you cant like a kids movie, but trying to put it on the same level as great live action films is a little silly since the quality of writing are not even comparable. When someone is able to predict exactly whats going to happen in the rest of the movie just from the set up, that is not good writing. That just makes it seem lazy and not new. The worst thing is that normal people aren't the only ones loving this mediocre stuff, award shows are too. These movies are winning Grammy's for having the writing of 12 year olds.

It seems to me that actually this film appeals way more to teenagers and parents, those are the two demographics I have talked to that enjoy the film. And sadness tried to touch the core emotions because she feels compelled to- the whole point of the film is to explain that looking at memories in a sad light isnt necessarily bad and is actually what riley needed to process and get over the initial depression that comes with a drastic life change. The personality islands collapsing symbolise a common symptom of depression- a loss of interest in activities that you previously enjoyed. When you have depression often you can be easily distracted and "lose your train of thought" which is why the train collapsed. Riley throughout the film is suffering from depression, and the sudden need to mature and change in her new environment. Of course there is a pre determined path for story, since in most young people suffering from depression the line of events is the same in terms of emotion. Parents really react and understand the segment where Joy cries over all the memories that dont matter to Riley anymore (because they were from her time as a baby) is the exact same thing for parents watching their child grow up, changing into a new person and in some cases experiences severe dips in their mood along the way.

  • @SeriouslyNotNormal

    @SeriouslyNotNormal

its wrong to say the film isn't smart and would appeal more to young children because a lot of the subtle parts in the writing are really clever (especially from a scientific standpoint- such as demonstrating why and when we lose memories, and how the brain processes memories/thoughts of each day at night and how similar events appear in dreams). All the young children in the theatre didn't pick up on the message, tone, or even some of the jokes in the film. This film requires experience and in that way it is very niche.

Inside Out does strike me as the most Pixar movie of all Pixar movies. Pixar steers away from villains, yet most of them have some sort of antagonist you could call a villain. Inside Out keeps the struggle internal. Riley is her own worst enemy. Stories like those are few and far between and I appreciate them where I can find them.

The "real world" scenes struck me as a much better look at depression than you typically get in any media that's not the personal account of a depressed person, and the "in the mind" plot explained what was going on in a way that kids (and, more importantly, stupid self-involved adults) could understand. Also the pizza joke is based on a real pizza place in SF that only sells one kind of pizza. And a general weird thing that I noticed last time I was in the Bay Area where every food place sells nothing but bespoke hipster variants on one single food that the shop is named for.

What I found odd about this film is that the majority of the film caters to kids too young to understand complex emotions. But the entire film is ABOUT how emotions are complex. Massive spoiler ahead: The film ends with the emotions realizing they have to work together, to give more than one emotion to each event/memory and that emotion about memories are not determined by how they felt when the memory was made, but the circumstances of when the memories are recalled. That's a pretty heavy topic for someone who doesn't understand complex emotions, don't you think? So why was all but the last 5 minutes catering to those kids, and the resolution catered towards adults?

The effect a kids movie has goes on far longer than the first watch; many tend to rewatch films they saw in their youth as they grow older, so the message is obviously understood that way. A six year old watches this, it's fun and sad. Then they rewatch it on a rainy day when they're bored at 12 and it is recontextualized and understood deeper, and it deeply impacts them. That's the beauty of a good kids' film that most kids' films don't achieve. The other effect is much deeper. The Last Airbender is a kid's show. It arguably has the same rough audience as Inside Out. The thing is, that show deals with genocide, revenge, honor, regret, the pitfalls of love itself, moral grayness, and a hundred other themes most adults can barely even understand. That doesn't mean it's wrong for the show to cater to kids. Other than the previously mentioned effect, it also will impact children upon first watch, whether they can outwardly portray their understanding or not. It will grant them an open doorway to begin understanding those themes much earlier than they normally would have, and in many cases, show them options they may not even otherwise know. I wouldn't be nearly as empathetic to others if it weren't for the deep moral lessons taught in Avatar. Not that I understood them when I watched them, no. It's because the main lessons hit me on a fundamental level, and I registered the intricacies subconsciously. Wall-E's biggest theme is collectivism. Kids won't fully understand that, but they'll sure be more open to the intricacies of it as they grow. Up is about the deep loss and angst someone feels when a loved one dies. Grief isn't something a young child can understand, but it sure as hell is something Up can help inform upon as they grow.

I felt like the personality related to depression, as its hard to form a sense of who you are and you get tired of things you like when depressed. I think she was dealing with adjustment disorder and the inability to express emotions of happiness and sadness are symptoms of depression. I understand much of your critics and agree, but personally this part reminded me of my own childhood and the depression i dealt with when younger and how I'd shove away sadness in favor of apathy trying to be happy

I'm surprised Adam didn't mention the part on the Train of Thought when the box of "Facts" and "Opinions" get knocked over. The characters mention that they look really similar and that "a lot of people get them mixed up". The movie was okay but that one part was pretty stand out to me and nobody seems to acknowledge it.

I think I was just the right age when I saw this movie. Old enough to understand what the characters represent, young enough for it to fundamentally change how I view and understood human emotions. Little me didn’t know that it was okay for memories to become sad, that it’s normal to be upset sometimes and that being sad isn’t wrong. I understand the point that adults find it boring but kids the same age as Riley don’t have the same grasp on emotions as adults, so ‘dumbing it down’ I believe was for the best.

As soon as I heard of the concept of this film, I thought of the concept album The Human Experiment by Ayreon. It's sort of a prog rock opera about a guy who goes into a coma and is guided by his personified emotions (each with a different singer) through an exploration of his memories to figure out what brought him to that point. It's a pretty kickass album, and I get the feeling this film's plot is actually (much) more shallow than that of the album haha.

when i watched this movie, i saw it more that the little emotion characters were used as a way to explain the complex new feelings the girl was going through, and not the other way around. like, she was struggling to find joy and her sadness kept welling up that she kept trying to suppress. it doesn't change a whole lot of the movie itself, but that's the context i see it in. its really interesting to see how other people viewed the same thing

This is pretty old now but I really felt like this movie hit home because she’s basically dealing with depression. That’s why she loses interest in a lot of things that’s what happens when you’re depressed and you act different. So I thought the movie did a good job showing how depression effects people but I’ve only seen this movie once so maybe more viewings I could agree with this more.

***** I have to agree with za21, I just saw it in a packed theater and while I did laugh at a lot of unintentionally hilarious moments, it's still a solid 7/10, just nothing new. I thought it was ballsy that they laid out everything (story/structure wise) VISIBLY IN FRONT OF THE AUDIENCE, and got away with it, but if you don't consider this to be anything more than a "touching kids movie," it's really not all that offensive. It's better than Big Hero 6, better than HTTYD2, and definitely better than Home. Great movie ≠ Flawless. Mommy is a fantastic movie, but in no way flawless.

TheMythofSissyFuss I was just making fun of him a little XD. but now being serious, you are right, this movie is better than Big hero 6, the main complain I have is that it's completely overrated only because it's a Pixar movie, come on 100% in rotten tomatoes? and people calling it "genius". 7/10 is a fair score, I'd give it a 6/10 but the difference is 1 point it's not much,

I just realised most of Disney’s animated movies have only two main characters. Is Disney Valve? Also, even though this movie had 5 characters, the main plot was the one with Joy and Sadness. So... I’m gonna count it.

Here's my take on this review. Most of the discussion focused on the predictable and unoriginal nature of the film' concept, since characters and their storylines are stereotypes from Pixar's previous works. Imo in this case Pixar used the common storylines and narrative to explore more mature themes and messages, like sadness is essential in creating more happiness and the inner conflicts of coming of age. The creativity of Inside Out isn't regarding the concept but the extrapolation of the concept - bing bong as an imaginary friend, abstract thought, subconciousness etc. I respect and often agree with Adam's taste but this review make me feel like he isn't willing to put praise on this outstanding aspects of the film, and instead of constructing a consensus for the public is just too subjective on the matter. Makes sense for a guy whose critism on Gone Girl is there's too many product placement. U hv a special and unique taste tho
