    Looking forward to it - Ti West has always been about the slow burn, House of the Devil, Sacrament, Innkeepers, even his V/H/S segment, all of them 90% build up so not too out of character. Him and Mia Goth really have made a great partnership.

    @@tiago77907 Yup, unless her past comes back again but it seems unlikely with the people that died in this movie. Nothing about Pearl's homicides but those happened about 70 years ago in Maxxine's timeline. They didn't go after Maxine because she changed her name I think and ran. Or maybe she hadn't fully used her stage name for that movie so the police only knew her as her real name and not Maxine Minx. Either way, the murders happened in a small Texas town and they didn't draw the connection. It took a separate private eye to track her down.

    It doesn't really connect much to Pearl, it is more a connection to X. Pearl is mentioned when they talk about the murders, but the events of Pearl aren't really referenced in it.

    @Redeemer8916

    It does connect thematically. Maxine goes to the farm and unfortunately meets Pearl, and Pearl says she's just like her, a star that will ultimately fizzle out.

    Pearl took place in 1918. I personally liked it better than X. I liked the early 1900s take on a slasher. X was straight up 1970s Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Eaten Alive, complete with Alligator. Maxxxine is coming off like a Giallo film. I love Giallo films.

    @@WatchorPass Yeah, well... the story is (unlike "X"), a single character development. It also feels way more claustrophobic than "X", and the color palette is waaaaay more generous, like you said (for young-old 1918-1979 symbolism, I guess). I think that in order for me or you or whoever to be able to appreciate "Pearl", some deeper empathy is needed. I think I like "Pearl" more because of its character focus and its slow fall into full madness. Both "X" and "Pearl" are classier takes on the Horror genre; in "Pearl's" case, I think I felt comfy with the bleaker storyline but rich character development. I personally don't care for typical classic horror, or for gore or whatever; all good stiff is dark & psychological, in my opinion. Also, Goth's acting was superb in "Pearl", that ending literally makes you cry. 😞

    Very true. You pretty much know it's her dad when we first meat the PI character and the way he talks about his client. I mean who else would be that invested in finding Maxine? I guess... the other potential person could be the director in X's ex-wife or girlfriend, because maybe she was upset that he left her for Maxine and then ended up dead.

    @@WatchorPass I put a small chance on it being the director of the movie she was playing in, The Puritan II. But I couldn't see a reason why she would want to hurt Maxine unless it was to get her into her role. She seemed to have the same "I'll do anything to be famous" attitude Maxine had. But I didn't think that idea had much chance and was 99% certain it was her father.

    @@WatchorPass the controversy angle would have made lots of sense. Early in the movie Maxine is also warned about Elizabeth having a bit of a temper which is also another reason I thought it might have been her. But the father was definitely the most expected. But now if they decide to do a fourth film I wonder where they would go with in. Perhaps something to do with Maxine falling from fame after she achieved it. The movies have yet to really put any significance on her cocaine addiction. Just like X it was something that was just there as part of her character but never fed into any conflict.

    I don't believe so. If I'm reading her IMDB entry right, she is an FX Artist who is making a mold of Maxine's face for some VFX in the Puritan II. She is in a scene where she mixes the paste, pours it on Maxine, and then heads out for a little. She returns a little later after something bad happens.

    See pearl isnt a movie I ever felt the need to rewatch after my first viewing. X I have watched on several occasions and it's more similar to the viewing experience of Friday the 13th or Halloween. Tits and hits baby. But Maxxxine was more similar to something like scream or dare I say Se7en. It's horror, but a completely different type of horror so imo you can't compare Maxxxine to X as they are just different.

    actually, pearl would hype herself up by saying ‘you’re a fucking star’ in the mirror (she did that before she went to film the porno) and if things were going badly she’d say ‘i will not accept a life i not deserve’ to also push herself forward, but it’s a bit different…so when maxine is saying ‘you’re a fucking movie star’ that’s more akin to before she goes to film the porn movie…although she has kind of made it to where she wanted to be, so she no longer needs to imply she has a life she doesn’t deserve, in her eyes she has made it and has the life she deserves

    I think it fit with Pearls whole mentality of I’m going to be a f*cking star. I didn’t mind the final ending, just thought the serial killer justification was weak and over the top. but it would have been interesting if she had gotten arrested but the Puritan II still did really well. so she would have been a star, but ended up in jail. maybe the end scene could have been her in a prison cell looking at a dirty mirror saying “you’re a f*cking movie star”
