I am at work. Trying to get through the rest of my shift. One of my friends called in work yesterday saying he couldn’t make it. He lives where the fire was going on. The bosses said they haven’t heard from him since. I 🙏🏾 he is ok. He is not the type to not call. Prayers and thoughts to all affected. Stay safe.

We were in Lahaina yesterday when this started and lost cell service early in the day. Most the island did. I know it’s hard not to worry. It’s likely this is why you haven’t heard back. We got off the island around 1:00pm. Sending prayers to your friends and loved ones on the island

Went to Lahaina on a cruise ship several years back. Enjoyed a cold beer and burger at a place on the main drag overlooking the ocean. Enjoyed the place so much, was planning to come back on another cruise this Fall. Looks like the cruise will be skipping that port. So sad. Please rebuild and restore that beautiful little town!

As a part Hawaiian it bring me to tears to see all the loss of the richly colorful and historic buildings. The damage is total. All that culture lost in less than 24 hours.

To all of the locals, I'm a mainlander, but have been to Lahaina many times and am so sorry for your loss.
Sad fact: Lahaina was the capital of Hawai'i from 1802 to 1845.
Oh no! Went here for our honeymoon. The Luau, snorkeling at baby beach during the day, sea Maui snorkeling and the museum there with turtle shells a million years old gone! I am so sorry for the people there and the beautiful, irreplaceable things they lost. I pray for all the people there.

This is heartbreaking. I remembered visiting Lahaina village back in May with my family. And now everything is gone. I hope that everyone in Hawaii stays safe and sound.
So sad. I visited Lahaina 50 years ago, back when the sidewalks were wooden in many places and the road to Kaanapali was gravel. The harbor was small and charming and it had a small village feel to it. My heart goes out to the people in Maui.
I was there 1 year ago on yesterday. It’s crazy to think that I saw something that will never be seen again in pray for Lahaina . Stay strong.

Prayers for those who have lost loved ones, those injured, those grieving, and everyone on Maui.
Having been to Lahaina, this is extremely sad to see. It will never be the same. Still waiting for explanation to how the fire started.

Hurricane winds caused many electrical poles/lines to fall and caused fires. Doesn’t help with the insanely hot weather lately, plus it’s been super windy here making the fires worse. Other parts of the island are on fire too

This is absolutely heartbreaking!💔💔💔 Maui was my favorite vacation spot, stayed there many times during the 1980's. I have so many amazing memories of Lahaina, it's just shocking to see it destroyed!😭😭😭

It appears very strong hurricane winds uprooted electric poles which started the fires. I am originally from Bangalore, India. We don't have hurricanes there but we experience very strong winds during the monsoon which uproot trees and electric poles. During such events, as a precaution, the electricity department deliberately shuts off all power transmission in the city until the storm passes. I am not an expert on this but this is something we need to look into doing here in the US.

It would have saved 350 homes in our town in Oregon from destruction, but the power company had no clue.
My wife and I have been to Lahaina many times and we loved the historic nature. It is so sad to see it all in ruins. Our prayers are with the people whose lives have been devastated by this fire. I have tears in my eyes as I type this.
This is unreal. I moved to Lahaina from the Big Island about 15 years in my late 20’s to get a change for a coupe years. I worked at Pioneer, Longhi’s, Hard Cafe etc. I had some of the best times of my life in that town. If you didn’t live there you just don’t quite know how devastating this is. One of the most beautiful, special and historical places on earth gone forever. ❤️🩹
I believe this is not by accident

I teared up when I heard about these fires and saw the devastation, I didn't know it would effect me like it did. I've been going there almost every year since 2013. My son has grown up going there, and have been all over that Island. We got to experience Halloween there a few times on Front street and it was the best time I've had for Halloween! We spent an entire month there in 2021 when things started to open up again. We've always had love and respect for the Island and have always been treated very well there. I hope all tourist who have been here and have felt the Aloha here will donate a little something to help them in any way. We are supposed to go in September and I hope we can, to at least contribute to the small business and tourist economy. Maui no ka oi!

How about instead of praying to an imaginary god, you stop voting Republican? All of this could have been solved decades ago had Republicans 1) acknowledged climate change and 2) not blocked every Democratic attempt to do something about it.
I stayed in Maui for about three months and used to busk next to the Lahaina Sunglass Company. This is so sad, my heart goes out to all the locals!

The Banyan tree…saddens me the most. I’ve been blessed to have taken my family to Maui for the last 20 years. Years of photos on those amazing species. My heart goes out to the locals, the small business owners and Maui in general.

The island was extremely dry. A hurricane passed the island far enough to the south that the island got none of the rain but lots of the wind. High heat and dry conditions are perfect for a flash fire to start.

Naw OP, that side of the island is a natural desert. Irrigation is used to make it green over there; same with Kihei. That said, I'm in Kihei right now. My best friend's cousin saw what caused this. High winds caused power lines to tip over, then the hot downed lines set his neighbors' grass on fire. The fire department had it contained, then wind picked up, and it was off to races. Lahaina is prone fires.

Returned from vacation from Maui on 7/29 and spent time in Lahaina. Several dinners on Front Street and took a boat from the harbor. The Pioneer Inn is the meeting place for most tourists. So sad to see this. Prayers sent.

Lahaina...one of my favorite places on earth. Many pleasant memories there of sitting under that grove at the harbour with pleasant winds, Hawaiian ice cream and the music playing...or strolling up and down Front street and getting yummy fish or a great cheeseburger with a Lava Flow.
Love and prays from here on the East coast to all of those suffering through this devastating loss of lives and property. Love to all of you from here in the state of Georgia.
This sucks right now, get animals, families out. Where it's end, it will begin again, but better construction, BLUE,GREEEN,COLORFUL, air quality will get better. Materials are replaceable. Help one another. Stay safe and hydrated.
The fires in Maui were caused by a combination of strong winds, dry vegetation and low humidity. The winds were generated by Hurricane Dora, a storm that was moving across the Pacific Ocean south of the Hawaiian Islands. The fires burned across Hawaii and prompted evacuations and an emergency proclamation.

I spent my 21st birthday in Lahina. I'm now 67! Ate dinner at the Chart House restaurant. Was it still there? I hope that FEMA helps everyone rebuild! This is a lost American treasure!

My girlfriend & I spent over 2 months living on Maui earlier this year and made several trips to Lahaina. Both myself and Liza have nothing but fond memories of our visits. We feel devastated about what’s happening there. Our hearts truly do go out to everyone that’s been so horribly affected by this awful tragedy.

Lol you are brainwashed by all the tourist ads. Not all of Hawaii is luscious rainforests. Lahaina is on the leeward side which means it’s drier and had wind coming down from the mountains which caused the fire in the first place.

Seems like a lot of this place had been in existence since colonial times, yet they all just burned. Obviously something has been different lately to cause this and they said it was dry weather and hurricane winds.
My heart us breaking for the people of Maui. I stayed in the historic hotel in Lahaina Pioneer Inn, and I am crushed. Such a beautiful building, and a beautiful town. 😢
I am so sad for all the people who’s livelihood is gone now, I truly hope for them they will be able to pick up the pieces and get through this horrible event. My heart goes out to Maui ❤

I stayed at Pioneer Inn in 2019 and remember that beautiful Banyan tree well. Also took the ferry to Lanai from the Harbor. Quite devastating to see the destruction. Prayers to all affected.
I did not think fire was a big worry in Hawaii. I've seen lava flows into housing areas and a house here and there but nothing.

Devastating. I have fond memories of visiting Lahaina back in 2002. We stayed at the Pioneer Inn, right across from that amazing banyan tree. A shocking loss.

I have memories of flying to Lahaina on that small plane back in1968. It was a crazy landing that looked like you were landing in the sugar cane field. But at the last second the runway apeared . It was my favorite town in Hawaii so romantic..I am hoping that people will go into the church that didn't burn and pray for salvation from what is coming apon the earth, seek Jah!!!
I remember going to Lahaina. Everything was basically wood. Calm and mellow area. I remember the cute charming library. Even had Bubba Gumps then.
This is horrible and my thoughts and prayers are with the locals and those affected by this. However, it’s almost ironic that “pioneer inn” and other “historically significant” buildings that were built by settlers that helped contribute to the abolishment of the native language and culture, were all burned to the ground

Yes, that's how history works. Thanks for that lesson. The world has been fighting over land for literally forever. The weather centuries later is not some karmic act. Those buildings were still viewed as historic obviously.
Our family was in Maui last summer. Lahaina town was the place to visit often for us. The beautiful museum, the Banyan trees, the restaurants, the harbor, the friendly locals....Just unbelievable! We are asking our friends and family to donate to the organiztions that the governor has suggest. I think that is the least we can do

Oh my days! I took my Mama to Maui for her 75th birthday-neither of us had been there. The island was so beautiful! We made it a point to go to Lahaina to visit the Cheeseburger in Paradise and to the outdoor shops. It was an amazing place! All of the old architecture, the people so friendly and happy to help lost tourists. We also spent time in Hana at the Hana Hotel. The drive was just breathtaking! I’m so glad I shot video of every place we went. It will stand as a bit of what was……so very sad. God bless all of the people of Maui and the tourists that were caught up in the disaster. My prayers go up to God to grant the people who have just lost virtually EVERYTHING! May all of the missing be found alive and, if not well, at least a high probability of recovery. I am so sorry you’re each having to endure this disastrous situation! 🙏🏻❤️

@@durandjohnson1321 it's not. I've seen the church when I vacationed there. No proof of anything 'prophetic'. No different than other buildings with no damage at all, but completely surrounded by structures that were completely destroyed.
