It appears very strong hurricane winds uprooted electric poles which started the fires. I am originally from Bangalore, India. We don't have hurricanes there but we experience very strong winds during the monsoon which uproot trees and electric poles. During such events, as a precaution, the electricity department deliberately shuts off all power transmission in the city until the storm passes. I am not an expert on this but this is something we need to look into doing here in the US.

We spent an entire month there in 2021 when things started to open up again. We've always had love and respect for the Island and have always been treated very well there. I hope all tourist who have been here and have felt the Aloha here will donate a little something to help them in any way. Naw OP, that side of the island is a natural desert. Irrigation is used to make it green over there; same with Kihei. That said, I'm in Kihei right now. My best friend's cousin saw what caused this. High winds caused power lines to tip over, then the hot downed lines set his neighbors' grass on fire. The fire department had it contained, then wind picked up, and it was off to races. Lahaina is prone fires.

The fires in Maui were caused by a combination of strong winds, dry vegetation and low humidity.
