You may not see this comment, but I just want to say that Ive searched all of KZread for an helpful tip on breath control and this video was what made it click for me. I always understood the whole breathing in, but I realized that I hold the breath and then sing out, without using that breath to support my singing. It made so much sense when you said to feel the muscle engaging the air back out. I'm now finding it hard to explain it haha. But anyways, thank you so much for this!

I spent thousands of pounds on a vocal coach and she never explained any of this to me, thank you. No wonder I gave up, hoping to really make progress this time. Thanks again

how does this relate to singing higher? Since the higher you go the more pressure you need to create in your abdominal cavity to allow your vocal chords to vibrate at a high air speed

It my understanding that You lighten your voice, hence your pressure to go higher in classic singing, not belting.

So, do you mean i have to purposely push in my belly when singing?? But that just forces the air out! Thats not breath support?

You are aware that you cannot breathe in/out with your belly right?😂 The only reason it moves is because your lungs need more space the more you breathe in, and you are using your diaphragm. But your diaphragm can only go down a little. So you can only breathe in a bit of air. So you are actually making it harder for you..... And you cant sing from your belly!😂 Its like saying i am running with my hands.... You can only sing with your vocal cords. And only if you have tension in your vocal cords, becsuse if they are loose and not pressed together you wont make any sound. It is like that whistle technique we all learned when we were young, where you had to put a blade of grass between your thumbs and blow into it. It only made a sond when your thumbs were close together. Also: you can only press air out of your lungs. And the muscle you use for that is the diaphragm. Your abs / your belly is useless for this, only for beginners it might be helpful as assitance for your diaphragm. Let's be real. Have you ever seen an athlete brething with their belly or whatever muscle you saying it is? No! They are all using their chest. Because it is more efficient, healthier and in some cases even impossible to breathe with your belly. For example a pregnant woman. How do you want her to breathe through the belly. It's impossible. Why do you think we are able to expand the bones in our chest? And one last thing: Try singing fortissimo (i mean a fortissimo that can easily be louder than the orchestra) with your technique. You will notice its either not possible at all or it is really hard. Thats why it is important to breathe with your chest. Without that you wont be able to sing fortissimo. And its not possible to sing in chest voice. And please dont tell anyone that chest voice is bad or something only beginners do. It is the main thing you need for singing.

Your abdomen is necessary for breathing. When you breathe in your diaphragm pushes your organs slightly down and out of your abdomen. When you exhale passively they organs push the air out of your lungs from under as the diaphragm relaxes. When you exhale actively you use your abdominal muscles to push those organs in faster/harder. Your abdomen and abdominal muscles are necessary for breathing. The diaphragm does not do everything on its own. Your comparaison between a singer and a pro ahtlete is obsolete as you need to be as relaxed as possible when singing, yet you need to breathe very quick and hard when you are performing at the top of your sport. He is teaching the very basics of singing for beginners, not all possible techniques. He does explain a lot more in other videos so you can look at those if you want to learn how to sing from the chest. The chest and abdomen work togheter during every breathing motion. It is not just the lungs and diaphragm. Please learn more about basic cardio-respiratory physiology before teaching false informations under singing videos :).
