MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 393 : The Bowie Ranking! 1966-2016. 1 July 2024

With 29 studio albums, 23 live albums, and about 4,000 best of's and compilations... David Bowie was prolific. Having talked about every era individually, I now talk through my ranking of his live albums, studio releases, and also pick out one specific unofficial release, one rarities set, and one best of as my favourites.
There are some rules : only material Bowie himself knew about and / or approved in his lifetime are included. There's a lot of unnecessary compilations in there, and I avoid them all! 01 July 2024.

What a great hour ride that was! Loved hearing your thoughts. Bowie is up there for me as well and, while I have every studio album, your collection puts mine to absolute shame! I have to agree with most of your top albums; 'Low' is my #1`. LOVE LOVE LOVE that album. Side note, as you talked birthdays - I share a birthday with Bowie! Not the same year, but same day. I always wondered if I loved Bowie because we shared a birthday and considered that an odd thought until I read an interview with Bowie where he talked about loving Elvis because he shared a birthday with him.

Appreciate your extensive ranking of the greatest Rock Star ever, David Bowie! ⚡ BUT, I had to stop and make a comment here, after hearing your words re: the live "Cracked Actor"... Firstly, the "original" release of DAVID LIVE at The Tower Theater Philadelphia trumps this one EASILY! I can't imagine what your ears are hearing. The Cracked Actor live set came a bit too late, with db's vocals sounding exhausted at times, and without any of those AWESOME punctuated killer lines within DAVID LIVE (see All The Young Dudes, Sweet Thing, Changes, Cracked Actor, Rock n Roll With Me, Knock on Wood, Width of a Circle and Rock and Roll Suicide, all from DAVID LIVE for the glorious evidence) Also, Earl Slick's spine ripping guitar is also a main focus of David Live. Inspired me as a player, that's for sure. That "Cracked Actor" Live set is weak in comparison, both by way of Bowie's vocals and the guitar as well! *Ha! And as I was typing here, I just heard you ripping IMAGES 1966-1967 (double LP w/the cartoon illustrations for each song). Right, so I don't know your age, but I'm getting the feeling that you were not around in the 70s. I've been a fan since age 7 in 1973. Bought that IMAGES LP new at that time. And I find it quite good, when you're in the mood for Bowie's excellent storytelling talents. And most of the songs are catchy and very good. Then PINUPS. It's simply the best covers LP ever recorded. Because David ups and improves almost every song. The production is excellent! It all sounds fantastic and there's not a wasted second throughout! So, I know everyone has to have those moments within their ranking, where they're trying to be the smartest and funniest person. Well, you've got to be "right" for those moments. I'm sure the rest of your ranking is at least quasi-accurate and well done, by way of regular reviews. Hunky Dory, IS brilliant. But there is one song that's just not Bowie..."Song For Bob Dylan" Not good. *if that song had been nixed, and any of the following stellar tracks was in its place, then the LP would be perfect: Holy Holy (late '71, superior Spiders version) John, I'm Only Dancing (the BEST version, from ChangesOneBowie) Velvet Goldmine Shadow Man Port of Amsterdam Marc ⚡

Understood, and yes, Hunky Dory is fabulous! I wasn't even born until the day of the last Ziggy gig at Hammersmith, so for me the 1970-1973 era was only ever experienced as a historical fact. I know what you mean about David Live, I like my live albums a bit raw, a bit dirty, and a bit rough, which "Cracked Actor" does for me. Not saying IMAGES is bad, there isn't a genuinely bad Bowie LP, more that the style doesn't work for me, I prefer my Bowie with more guile and less innocence. ;)

@@markreed4543 Very cool and humble reply, Mark. I appreciate all of what you said here. *And I have to say that your birthdate is just about as cool as it gets: 7-3-73! I mean, that's cool in and of itself, but you add in the historic Bowie factor, and it becomes the most excellent birthdate one can have. Only bad part about it, is that you weren't able to take in "David Bowie" "as he went in the 1970s" That right there is a supreme gift I would never trade. And I was still young! I just got into records and guitars very early. My Mom was a great pianist as well. But man, taking in the Bowie LPs, the changes, as they were released and happening, was beyond special. Hard to describe how good it truly was. Also, my Dad took me to see THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH at a ritzy NYC theater in the Summer of '76. I begged him, and he took me. It was one of the most special days of my childhood. And I'm so glad that the film was made exactly when it was, with David at his mid 70s best and most unique! Anyway, I totally get what you're saying about liking live albums raw, edgy, etc. I do as well. But, for me, DAVID LIVE has it all. It's raw, visceral, intimate and powerful! And again, Bowie's awesome vocal delivery on those songs I mentioned up there, really makes it. I mean, just compare "All The Young Dudes" for just one. Really compare them. DAVID LIVE is an incredible LIVE album, most especially for David and Earl, but as a whole, intimate "you're there" concert...right to the end of that fantastic, best version of Rock n Roll Suicide. As for IMAGES, it's all right. I know most people don't care for that era's material. But I also think that most people are just going off the regular reviews and not really giving it it's proper chance. I do not compare it with David's ultimate '70-'80 stuff, but I do think it's a cool and unique start. And I still love listening to that IMAGES album, in full. Marc

@@markreed4543 Oh, and as far as taking in each album after Ziggy as a brand "new" experience....it was, as I said, fantastic & invaluable! Although I could talk about each of them, from Aladdin Sane through Lodger, in loving detail, I wanted to add that my purchase of LOW (on 8-track tape, no less) was an absolutely engraved memory. Even the 1st brilliant side was shocking at the time, brand new. I remember (and again, I wasn't even 11 yet), after listening to the album just once, I walked into the kitchen, picked up the phone, and called a friend (Greg) just to play a bit of it for him to see what he thought of it. LOW was so off beat and stunning! Even in being a serious Bowie fan, and "expecting" change, this album was groundbreaking! And the album cover was again, a still from "The Man Who Fell To Earth," so for me it was all so beloved and very fantastic! Marc ⚡

very insightful, interesting ranking. I absolutely agree with what you said about the earhtling/outside-phase, and how Hours was a step back from that. I have never listened to his albums post-Hours (even Blackstar), but maybe it is time, especially Next Day sounds like something I would like. On the other hand, I never really understood whats so great about Scary Monsters, I must be the only one who thinks that way, but I think of it as very overrated
