MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 387 : Morrissey's "Vauxhall And I" 1993-1994. 3 June 2024

Morrissey's fifth LP - "Vauxhall And I" - is possibly his best solo album, a stunning, delicate, tour de force that explores a new adult identity, with an embedded band, great co-writers, and a lyrical obsession with belonging, nostalgia, loss, betrayal, violence, the relationship between artist and audience, the search for identity and what it is to be a man in a lost Britain in 1993. I love this album, and you should too! 03 June 2024.

What a lovely surprise. I finish work at 10 which is why I’m often here first. What a beautiful album this is. I wasn’t there, I became a Smiths fan in 98 and caught up on the Morrissey albums in the wake of You Are The Quarry. Well it was a great 2005 for me anyway.

You chose the "Real World" over me !?! 😭😭 The only thing that makes up for that comment is that I am a HUGE Morrissey fan. Thanks for doing this album, probably his best. 😁😁

Nothing to add, just great hearing you go in such depth about Moz, the pop star who continues to be the awkward thorn in the side of the music world to this very day.

Well, that's good to hear! I'm just a dude talking to his phone, I can't tell how the audience is responding. :)

Is the Brighton Rock allusion a reference back to Rubber Ring? Pinkie dies but his voice lives on in the grooves of a record. The end of the film has a scene that isn't in the book, where Rose plays the record for the first time. The audience knows Pinkie recorded something like, "You want me to say I love you. But I hate you." But thanks to Divine Mercy, the record gets stuck and the film ends with Rose listening to Pinkie saying"I love you, I love you," over and over again. That would seem to fit with your idea that we live in other people's minds, even when those people don't understand us at all.

Apparently I go off the rails at 41 minutes by being critical of M. As always, all of these are just my opinion, and that includes good and bad, and pointing where I think artists I like make mistakes or bad decisions and are fallible. Hold on or skip a few minutes if you don't like it! :)
