MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 384 : Pet Shop Boys "nonetheless" / "furthermore" 15 May 2024

Pet Shop Boys 18th* album, "Nonetheless" was released on 26th April - and I thought rather than do a quick episode for clicks, I'll let it settle first. Preceded by "Loneliness" and "Dancing Star", the album came in a plethora of formats, including a Bluray, coloured vinyl, a bonus EP "Furthermore", creating a tapestry of songs exploring identity, community, and separation in Covid. 15 May 2024.
*if you count "Relentless", "Battleship Potemkin", and "The Most Incredible Thing" which I do..

Just wanted to send a thanks for all the hours and info. I found the channel during a period of sustained ill health at the start of the year (Pet Shop Boys Vid...'Nightlife' maybe...?) It's all gold, mate and if it's not too weird to say you've been a semi constant companion ever since. What a treat. I've learnt so much and had my nostalgia glands well and truly tickled. Keep up all the effort, Mr. There's a middle aged white guy in Norwich (Ah Ha!) relying on you...or you know slow down or knock it on the head entirely - whatever works for you.

No plans to knock it on the head, but at some point I will run out of stuff to talk about! I'm not posting much as I'm at a LOT of gigs this month - 10 in May alone.

Genuinely love your Pet Shop Boys reviews, Mark. Great series. Love Nonetheless…the orchestration is immense! The only downside to this is that as yet there is no instrumental version of the album. Great stuff Mark 😊

I like the album very much. Loneliness is great, its starting melody is just awesome. Feel is the weakest track for me. Why am I dancing is nice melodic as well. New London boy is a touching autobiographical work by Neil. Dancing star is my second favourite, it has very light, feelgood, summer-y atmosphere. A new bohemia is my fav track, it is epic and moving and theatrical. Schlager is quite funny and sarcastic, Secret is more philosophical. Narcissus is clever and very on-point. Love is the law is a perfect piece to end the album. I'm so happy that Neil and Chris still writing so many amazing songs. The Alan Turing piece was called A man from the future. Have you seen the Then and now documentary? What do you think about it? I enjoyed it thoroughly, the Boys were so lovely in it.

Hi Mark - been avidly waiting for this one....great review once more. I've yet to purchase the album, from what i have heard it seems to be a random selection of tunes (reminiscent of the very poor 'Hotspot'), leaving Super as the last epic they put out. Personally the whole 'loneliness' thing was rather offputting. Hideous CD single cover, standard PSB fare, and a low end video to boot. I have an inkling their next LP will probably be their swansong, sadly. Sorry, i haven't followed you right from the start Mark, do you actively play in a band?? Do your talents have no bounds?!! Take care. A big fan of the Notcasts. Rob, Brum.

Hey Rob, I'm not currently in a band but I do spend time mucking about with my home studio and synths and remixing 80's pop hits.

I was going to ask if that was the new Annually in your hands and I found out Yes it was, with zero reasons to buy it, Why no CD? cheap bastards, the last one I brought was 2021 and 2 songs was still kind of worth it, I skipped 23 but can find A copy for under $300 on discogs so there's that, But the download version has an extra track, I have the 2017 Annually Single "Undertow" on Vinyl which also has an extra track, 2020's was the best value 7 tracks even though Bowie did it better. The PSB's have 25 x2 releases and I'm trying to get them all "Lost" was the last one, they have gone back to Parlophone , Still x2 but the Kobalt Label Services numbers have stopped.

I Like the reworking of the old songs, but I have always felt "It's A Sin" stinks, I never liked it, the "Lockdown" version of "West End Girls" was good for a song that's been redone many times - It came with that book thing that I never read, A whole album of Redos would be good. I haven't listened to the new album yet, may be years till I get round to it - Still haven't listened to any of the suede albums since they came back about 10 years ago - I've played them once and know all the singles but no deep dives - I watched that "Movie" they made, I didn't get it, they made one for "Autofiction" which I also didn't get, why do the English look the way they do? "Very" was the last PSB's album I got into, I listened to "Bilingual" enough to know I didn't like it and have skipped over everything since but I listen to all the singles and the B-sides and I have stacks of 12" singles that have never seen the record player, Double 12" singles of remixes done by people whose names aren't Arthur or Shep - One last thing where is the song "Through You" from because an extended Mix is nice but that usually comes after an original version.

You don't include "Closer To Heaven" & "Musik" as creations of PSB?

"Closer To Heaven", "Results" and "Reputation" are largely PSB written/produced but not performed. "Muzik", like "My Beautiful Launderette", are EP's in length.

@markreed4543 is "Results" lizza's album? I think "Musik" is a continuation of "Closer to Heaven" or something.
