Many years ago, I was a high school teacher in a very small town. We were going over World War 1. I played this song on the final day of the unit. Normally the class was loud and chatty - just like normal sophomores. I remember that I had a teacher's aide, a very nice woman in her 30's who was very interested in this era and my approach to teaching this. At the end of the song, you could have heard a pin drop in the class. Dead quiet. The aide had tears streaming down her face. I will never forget this. War is a terrible thing in the human condition. This song brings that to light. Thank you.

Firstly, don’t take this as a rebuttal of how you and everyone (mostly) view the song. I come from a Quaker family and my grandfather was a conscientious objector on an ambulance train during WW1. His only regret? Not being a combatant in the war…. As Quakers we absorb the blame for not volunteering (and ignore) doesn’t matter it’s a conscious decision. The regret my grandfather had is different and challenging to reconcile with today’s narrative. Nonetheless, I still feel in a conscious, and probably subconscious way, that his view albeit without context has merit. In biblical terms turn the other other cheek until your fellow humans suffer disproportionately as a result.

Oh dad I'm so sorry, you were only 59. Rest easy and may you be in peace, blessed with an eternity of music like this. I can't wait to see you again and hold you in my arms like I should have done so, so much more when you were still here. To all of you out there, don't take your old man for granted. Show him you love him now that it's still possible. I love you daddy 😭💔

It's the economy of movement that sets him apart, he can still put so much emotion into his playing with so little apparent effort. You see other guitarist try to play like this and their bends and vibrato send the guitar stock all over the place, his guitar barely moves (nor does his right hand). It is truly masterful.
