"...If you feel pain, you are alive. If you feel other people's pain, you are a human being..." Leo Tolstoy Thank you, Mr Knopfler, for articulating so beautifully and sublimely what so many of us everywhere feel deeply in our souls and minds... Was fortunate to see you perform live with DS at the Royal Theatre in Dublin, Ireland, way back in 1981, recall it vividly like it was yesterday and was profoundly inspired by your mastery on the instrument and still am... Long may you run, my brother in Arms..!
With no doubt it is best song I have ever heard. Thank you Dire Straits.

I'm from the USSR. And when I heard this song in 1985-86 on TV, it sank into my soul. And now I am over 50 years old, and I enjoy listening to her, and I remember my young years... So everything was fine then. Thanks to Mark Knopfler. It's amazing!

At almost 73 years of age and with a grandfather who served on the Somme in the Light Horse, my Dad in the RAAF and me missing the " American War, as the Vietnamese people correctly call it, by one day, I totally comprehend the futility of war. Just look at where the world is now. Enough said. So, as family and friends head for a wake to be long remembered, " Going Home " from Local Hero shall send them to craft beer, exceptional wines, non-alcoholic beverages if required and to finish off, a selection of exceptional single malts. I just wish I could be there. And to you Mark Knofler, what a wonderful legacy you have bestowed on people who appreciate, respect, and absorbe the brilliance of your special gift of composition and sharing. I took my oldest daughter, who is now 40, to see you at the Sydney Entertainment Centre before it's was redeveloped. A wee tear slid from my eye when you sang two of my three favourite compositions. I avoid this song as often as I can. I love it but it gets me every time and kicks me in the guts every time and I find myself crying like a baby. It brings back memories of uncertain times of despair and war and what the future might bring, but mostly and most tragically the loss of innocence. My wife always tries to convince me not to listen to it because as she says it's difficult to console me, nevertheless she always does it. She's an angel! Anyway, if this song gets you, you know for sure that you are still on the right side of things. Cheers and Peace!
With 37 years military service, and 25 years federal law enforcement….this remains an anthem for those who suffer under oppression, those who resist it, those who fight to prevent it, certainly those who make the ultimate sacrifice, and those who stand and support them…..whether for country, principle, or life. And this live version pulls at the heart like no other.

@@AS-lk2vm. Only partly true, mi amigo. Not all the time, but yes, sometimes. But more often than not, my experience?…..it isn’t for money that men and women go forth under arms. Usually, it is for something far greater: principles like freedom, justice, or something else far greater than “profit”. And if you truly don’t understand that, I’m sorry for you. Still, I wish you only the best. Stay safe….and sleep well, friend. There are good men and women out there, in uniform, standing watch, to ensure that you can. And remember, “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph in the world is that good men do nothing”.

@@user-lj4nh4tn9v Good morning, user. Late 60s….I’m old enough to know right from wrong, and still appreciate both the sacrifices and pains of those both older AND younger than me, and especially the youthful vigor of those younger who aren’t so discouraged that they’re still willing to work to make the world a better place! Through some stressful events in my life…Lebanon ‘84, the Battery 9/11, SAR and body retrieval New Orleans post-Katrina, countless LE Ops…the music of PF was with me. I wish you peace and wellness….and a life as fulfilling as mine has been.

Lyrics These mist covered mountains Are a home now for me But my home is the lowlands And always will be Someday you'll return to Your valleys and your farms And you'll no longer burn to be Brothers in arms Through these fields of destruction Baptisms of fire I've witnessed your suffering As the battle raged high And though they did hurt me so bad In the fear and alarm You did not desert me My brothers in arms There's so many different worlds So many different suns And we have just one world But we live in different ones Now the sun's gone to hell and The moon's riding high Let me bid you farewell Every man has to die But it's written in the starlight And every line in your palm We're fools to make war On our brothers in arms

I am just so glad that I grew up while Mark was just getting famous. I'am 100% confident I grew up during our greatest generation.
If this doesn’t touch your soul, if this doesn’t make you stop for a minute to reflect, if this doesn’t make you almost want to cry...... I fear for your soul.

Masterpiece the legend Mark Knopfler best guitarist 🎸 😊
Former Army here. I love this song and what it says to all of us. It seeks to explain what the word "brother" means. Service people, especially combat veterans know exactly what this means. It's an unspoken pact, live or die & no man left behind. We would die for one another. The mission & the men are all that matters.
In 2004 I Iost my last 4 brothers to cancer all in a 13th month period all who served their country I am 71 and every time I here this song I still cry it just means so much. Such beautiful words and music and a absolute genius playing the guitar.

I lost my friend to braincancer, he was so young 😪 Sorry for my bad englisch
Since I was very young I identified with the songs of Dire Straits, until now 48 years old, I see that this legacy passed on to my 23 year old son who admires Mark Knofler so much ... Congratulations
I will never tire of this work of art, it's beautiful, poignant, painful yet transcends you to a place of deep transient thought. Thank you Mark, a true living legend paying tribute to all whom have fallen in war. May peace one day be our future, not war, famine and hate. God bless everyone reading this comment, may love and light always shine on you as you take this unknown journey through life. ❤️

The guitar was invented long ago by craftsmen who knew that one day long in the future a man would step forward and use their invention as they dreamed it should be. He was mark knopfler

I will always remember I have the chance to meet Mark and the rest of the Dire Straits band in 91 in New Zealand, I was security for them and Hot house flowers opened for them. It was raining and they sang "I can see clearly now" but the big thing for me was just how nice and down to earth Mark Knopfler was, he may not remember me but I will always remember him
I was diagnosed with leukemia, given 30 % survivol rate, in 2002. I was 25 years old. I was very lucky to know that my older brother was a suitable stem cell donor. When we were younger we listened Dire Straits a lot and when in treatment this song came very meaningful to me as I was saved by my brother ❤️
Musik verbindet nicht nur Körper und Geist, die Musik führen die Menschen zusammen und warum ???? NUR FRIEDEN ✌🏼
I love how Mark plays a wonderful and emotional solo effortlessly, then turns around respectively to hear his amazing band, what a legend.

I am 80 but this is stil one of my favorytes
As a musician, the hardest thing to do is to maintain your relationship with your songs. To remember what drove you to write it. And how we feel when it comes together. Music is how we remember our lives. The feelings that were so strong. But have faded. For me it's always a emotional revival. This ties us together.
